5 Interior Decorating Ideas for Children’s Rooms

Built by Sherrie Le Masurier on Friday, October 20th, 2006

When it comes to interior decorating ideas for children’s room the key is not time and money but creativity.

Sometimes all you need to transform your child’s room are simple products and techniques.

Once you have an idea of what you would like to see in your child’s room sit down with her and discuss any ideas she may have. Sometimes two heads are better than one.

It makes little sense to ‘surprise’ your child with a freshly decorated room and a lot of sense to involve her every step of the way in the interior decorating process. Since she’s the one spending the most time in the room, it’s important she have it the way she likes.

Characters and Images

Inexpensive cardboard can be transformed into wonderful fantasy characters and castles (or just about anything you can imagine). Simply trace out a favorite picture, cut and paint. A friend did her daughter’s room over using cardboard cut-outs of a castle complete with a prince and princess on horseback. Silver spray paint was used on the castle and the prince, princess, and horse were traced from a coloring book and enlarged.

You could also use this basic idea to create shadows. All you would need to do is cut out your shapes and then paint black.

Stencils and Stamps

Instead of repainting your child’s room consider updating it with a funky stencil or foam stamp.

Paint Colors

If you do want to paint your child’s room but are having a hard time coming up with the right colors, turn to your child’s favorite things. Seek inspiration in an outfit, a toy, a game or a book.

Matching Storage Containers

Interior decorating is also about incorporating functional elements like storage containers. Every kid needs a handy place to put their stuff so why not make it match the decor of the room? You can go the wicker basket or wooden crate route or opt for colored plastic bins.

Kid-friendly Fabrics

Last but not least, it’s important that your child’s room be safe and washable. If you’re updating your child’s bedding and curtains consider purchasing coverings that are washable, resist to stains and/or are patterned to hide marks.
