6 Steps to Write the Great American Novel

Built by Joe Planto on Monday, February 5th, 2007

Almost every one I know dreams of writing the Great American Novel. A number of people might start, but few people finish. While this how-to won’t write the novel for you, these are a few simple steps that will help you get started and reach those immensely satisfying words: The End.

First you will need two things , 1st a Word Processor, 2nd some Time

So now that you have youe Word Processor and found some time you will here are some steps to go with

STEP 1: They say: Write what you know. You could add to that Write what you enjoy or even Write what you want to know. Choose a topic that interests you. Your work, or your hobby. You can even try to take a story from your parents or grand parents life and set the plot to modren day.

STEP 2: Write an outline of the plot trajectory of the novelthis can be very detailed or a general outline of plot points. Some writers know every scene ahead of time, others will figure out what happens as the book progresses.

STEP 3: Similarly, write down a list of all the characters, including each character’s backstory. Some of this might not make it into the book, but it will help determine motivations between the characters and further the plot. It can also be used to fill in holes in spots you find to be needing more content.

STEP 4: 4. Try to write at least a page a day. Might not sound like a lot but at the end of the year you’ll have amassed at least 300 pages. If you sit down and write a page, it will likely expand to three or four pages.

STEP 5: This on is very hard to do but… Don’t reread what you’ve done until you’re over half done. Writers have been known to rewrite the same page over and over again. The idea is to push forward and add content, editing comes later.

STEP 6: Don’t write something that has been written a thousand times before. Try to be unique. At the same time, mimicking a favorite writer can be helpful until you find your voice.

Now here are some extra Tips & Warnings to help make the process better.

* The main problem new writers have is criticizing the work too soonif it’s not perfect right away, the book’s not worth pursuing. Keep in mind that many writers have written dozens of drafts before their books reached the shelves. They may have even written entire novels that were never published.

* Set a page quota for the week, so if you miss writing one day, you can make it up the next.

* Make sure to have a comfortable workstation. Take walks or exercise to keep energized. Don’t write when you’re overly fatigued.

* Writing a novel takes a significant investment of time. Try not to get buried in the process.
