Today I’m addressing one of the most common questions I get asked: where can I find a job abroad? Here are 7 ways, just to give you a quick starting point.
Online career sites
Online career sites have become some of the most
important tools for an international job hunt. They
automate a lot of the work, allowing you to set up a
personalized account which notifies you of jobs when
they arise in your chosen field and location. Examples
are http://www.monster.com, http://www.overseasJobs.com
Niche online job sites
There are many niche online job sites apart from the
big, famous ones. These are certainly worth trying. The
niches can be geographic (for a particular country or
even city) or they can be industry and career-based.
Examples are http://www.employment-job-search.net,
http://www.medhunters.com. There are also many industry sites,
newsletters and email lists dedicated to specific
sectors, which can be used to find international jobs.
Corporate websites
Corporate websites also include job advertisements, but
be aware that many jobs are never advertised
externally. These websites are also useful for
researching into a company – crucial if you get to
interview stage.
Networking
Networking can be one of the most powerful ways to find
a job abroad – especially for the jobs that are never
advertised (that’s probably most of them). Staying in
contact with colleagues from the past can also be
valuable – you never know what they might know!
Professional societies
Professional societies can also help. Joining one will
expand your network and add weight to your CV/resume.
Online discussion groups
Online discussion groups on the internet can help you
network overseas. Try http://www.expatica.com for
Western Europe or http://www.britishexpat.com.
Local newspapers
Check out local newspapers and websites that cover the
location you want to work in. Also check out trade
publications based in that country.
