You don’t necessarily have to be Mexican to enjoy a traditional Mexican wedding dress. Mexican wedding dresses are similar enough to other Western dress styles, but unique enough that you’ll be sure to stand out on your wedding day. If you’re looking for a Mexican wedding dress because of your heritage, there have never been more options available to you. The Spanish influences of Mexican dresses can feel very classic and can still work in a very modern wedding.

Like many Western wedding gowns, Mexican wedding dresses are white and usually full gown length. One of the most traditional dresses comes from Oaxaca and is called the huipil. It’s a long dress with short sleeves. The huipil is often adorned with intricate hand-embroidery of flowers or geometric shapes and is Mayan in origin, but incorporates some Spanish flavour, usually in the embroidery. Look for the bold designs from San Pedro de Amusgos and San Andrés Chicahuaxtla. A huipil could be the perfect dress for your beach or destination wedding as they are cool and airy, yet very interesting and beautiful. To complement your Mexican dress, your groom can wear a guayabera, also known as a Mexican Wedding Shirt. These shirts are white, and would also be perfect for a beach wedding.

For more of a Catholic style Mexican wedding dress with a strong Spanish influence, look for a dress with long sleeves, and intricate lace. To complete the look, find a long, modest mantilla veil that will cover your face or to wear back over your hair. The mantilla is a sheer silk veil that usually has lace sewn around the ages. Mantilla have been around for centuries so look for vintage veils and heirloom pieces. The Mantilla should be held up with a Peineta (a large comb) so that it stays in place. Your peineta can also be very ornamental. If your have a Mexican background, ask family members about heirloom peinetas.

For a flamenco look, pair a slim wedding dress with a bolero jacket. Outfit your dashing groom in a matador jacket, but find out first if he’d be willing to wear the tight trousers! For a more dramatic flamenco look, look for a dress that is similar to a flamenco dancer’s with lots of ruffles and movement.

Whatever your style or background, the many options for Mexican wedding dresses will be sure to amaze you. Find the one that suits you best, and dazzle everyone on your wedding day.
