History is fascinating, and when it’s coupled with exotic foreign cultures and practices, it’s hard to keep from becoming totally entranced. Medical practices of the Far East have long been a source of fascination, because they are so different from the techniques used in the Western World. Acupuncture has long been one of those mystifying foreign practices that so intrigue us.
In Ancient China, people started using acupuncture to cure all physical and mental ailments. Although the treatment had its roots in the Middle East, it quickly moved to become a beneficial treatment all throughout the Eastern world.
Acupuncture is like no other therapy in existence, and it’s a long way from the tenets of modern medicine. Traditional Western therapies are based on the interactions of people with each other and with the world around them. Acupuncture, on the other hand, is based on the internal person within the body. It works to bring the body into its proper state of balance.
Acupuncture is more than a therapy. It’s an entire belief system that encompasses the whole body and the process of healing it. It’s no wonder that so many people have developed a fascination with the acupuncture treatment. When it was first introduced into our culture, it appeared to be nothing but sticking needles into the skin. Since that time it has gained many devotees due to the benefits it offers its patients.
The basis of acupuncture lies in the ancient Chinese belief that all energy in the body comes from the Chi. The Chi is also responsible for any pain experienced by the body. The Chi controls various pressure points (acupoints) in the body.
In order to stop feeling pain, a person must eliminate those points of pain. The Chinese culture found pathways that run along the Chi line. The pressure points are on these lines. To eradicate pain and disease from the body, needles must be placed on the various pressure points. By doing this, the body becomes healed. It doesn’t matter what caused the pain or how chronic it is, acupuncture can relieve it in a matter of minutes, but it’s said that it only works in those who really believe in it.
Although acupuncture is based on faith rather than science, Western doctors and alternative therapists are both looking to it to provide them with an inner look at the workings of traditional Chinese medicine. They have been slow to accept a practice that has no scientific data to back it up, though. Because of this, many Americans are missing out on the treatment that could alter their lives for the better.
Acupuncture is truly an amazing practice, and we in the Western culture should be very appreciative that it is finally becoming a part of our lives.
