ADD/ADHD CRISIS SUPPORT

Built by Kerry Greening on Sunday, June 11th, 2006

Do you find it disturbing with the increase in numbers of children you see and hear about who receive recommendations for undergoing drug therapy with Ritalin and other drugs to “quiet” the mind or to make the child submissive? Certainly, the drugs do work to hide the symptoms of a much deeper problem. They do not correct the root cause or underlying factors.

The Results of Dietary and Supplementary intervention in ADD/ADHD and

other learning difficulties have become self-evident.

ADHD is being identified as epidemic throughout the United States. The National Institutes of Health in Washington, D.C., estimates that from 3 percent to 5 percent of all American schoolchildren have been diagnosed with the disorder. It is not uncommon to see a line of children standing outside the nurse’s office at school awaiting their midday dose of Ritalin. This trend alone is reason for concern. Besides the physiological issues behind the diagnosis, the emotional consequences of ADHD – children aren’t doing well in school, parents and teachers are frustrated, families are disrupted – drive the search for a cure. In the desire to solve these issues, more than 6 million American children currently diagnosed with ADHD are being treated with central nervous system stimulants – usually methylphenidate (Ritalin).

Side effects of Ritalin:

The possible side effects of Ritalin include: loss of appetite, depression, irritability, a worsening in behavior, headache, feeling jittery, tremor, upset stomach, difficulty sleeping, anxiety, possible rise in blood sugar, increased blood pressure, psychosis*, paranoia* and tics.*

*indicates that the side effect is rare

Prescription Drug Warnings for Ritalin:

Your doctor should do a complete history and evaluation before prescribing Ritalin.

Ritalin should not be given to children under 6 years of age.

Suppression of growth has been observed in long-term use of Ritalin so it is important for your doctor to watch your child carefully while he or she is taking the drug.

Blood pressure should be monitored for anyone taking Ritalin. This is especially true for those with pre-existing high blood pressure.

Some patients have experienced blurred vision while taking Ritalin.

Anyone with a seizure disorder of any kind should avoid taking Ritalin. Your doctor should ask you about your history involving seizures.

Patients should also tell their doctor about any previous alcohol abuse or substance abuse

The question you have to ask yourself is this are you or your child deficient in Ritalin?

When you or your child was born did you or your mother go to the grocery store and pick up your daily supply of methylphenidate?

When you look at and analyze our current health care systems in westernized cultures, they are focusing our healthcare efforts on post disease pills rather then prevention and on treating illness rather then promoting wellness. They are actually treating sickness.

Is there a better solution?

Yes look at supporting your body’s natural physiology. Support your bodies systems and provide the very basic building blocks your body requires to function without disease!

Is there a better way?

Yes absolutely the people in the world are now looking at natural solutions that address the root cause of the diseases. People are sick and tired of treating a symptom that causes a side effect that often causes worse symptoms then the disorder they are treating in the first place.

What has happened over the past few years regarding research on glycobiology and glycoscience? Well we are now seeing over 8,000 published articles on glyconutritionals alone, this field is just exploding.

Here are some alarming nutrition facts.

Recent statistics indicate that 25% of our children are clinically overweight.

People in general simply do not eat enough fruits and vegetables, of the two servings each day that the average person eats one is french-fries.

Pre-packaged meals are the most frequently purchased item in the grocery store in western civilizations.

The average young person consumes six carbonated soft drinks per day, and they are just full of sugar.

Our fast-paced lifestyle in today’s era leads people to consume high amounts of fast foods (horrible nutrition value). Everything is convenience oriented because both parents or single parents have to work full time plus jobs (some people work two or three) now combine that with an inactive lifestyle has put demands on our bodily systems that were never intended.

In the highly processed pre-packaged and fast foods, most of the available nutrients and fiber are removed. What child do you know that desires to eat raw fruits and veggies regularly without being convinced by their elders to eat? Kids want the frozen pizza’s, the deep fried chicken fingers, the fries, the chips, the pop, not the nice salads full of nutritious veggies. All you hear before they try it is Yuk that’s disgusting. Don’t you hate that word?

How does this relate to ADD and ADHD? Consider that the brain runs on vitamins, minerals, enzymes, glyconutrients, phytochemicals, essential oils and fatty acids, oxygen and blood sugar in combinations that are called neurotransmitters.

Under stress and a diet high in refined sugar, bleached white flour, simple carbohydrates and fast foods, the natural brain function uses up the neurotransmitters and can only replace them if the necessary building blocks are present. These building blocks come from fresh fruits and vegetables, essential fats, essential oils, glyconutrients and high quality, protein sources.

Not only a poor diet leads to this disorder, we are faced with an ever changing food supply that is harvested green, sprayed with herbicides and pesticides. In other words your food supply is deficient in the proper levels of vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, essential fats, essential oils, glyconutrients and high quality, protein sources.

Due to genetic predisposition and variations in environment, diet and exercise, some children are more noticeably affected with neuro-developmental disorders. Neuro-developmental disorders like ADD and ADHD can be helped with a return to a proper food regimen and specific supplementation designed to restore the building blocks for brain and neurotransmitter development.

A change in lifestyle is most beneficial over time, not drugs! Specifically your child’s diet and sufficient exercise. Lets not forget the environment and the time that your children spend in their leisure activities. The environment plays an important role in developing habits that improve health instead of degrade health. We are all born with a full complement of life factors and due to our environment (mental, emotional and physical) we follow a process of slow destruction, status quo or growth. Our resilience to disease and mental processes is partially determined by our environment. For example, a house where mold and toxic chemicals are present can impair immune and brain function because the body is using many resources to keep these molds and toxic chemicals from infecting the cells. This takes a lot of cellular energy that is then not available to operate the nervous system properly and other body functions at peak efficiency.

This all sounds pretty complex and is when all the interactions in our bodies are considered. Suffice it to say that all conditions occurring in our bodies, including ADD and ADHD have a significant relationship to nutritional status.
