Amsterdam – Agnieten Kapel

Built by Harry Preston on Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

If you ever find yourself in Amsterdam, Netherlands and are looking for some history, free up your schedule and head to the Agnieten Kapel. Once part of the convent of St Agnes (founded in 1397), the Agnieten Kapel of the st. Agnes Chapel is part of the Athanaeum Illustre (out of which envolved the University of Amsterdam), the oldest seat of high learning in the city. The current structure was built in the 1470’s after the original was reduced to ashes in the great city fire of 1452. It is quite the spectacle.

The agnieten Kapel was founded in an age when Amsterdam had no fewer than 30 convents. Inside these quiet walls and courtyards, secluded from the city life, women of faith would dedicate their life to higher purpose. Nowadays, those entering here are more likely to be dedicating their lives to higher learning. Visitors can enjoys the environs and rest in the lovely inner courtyard garden.

In honour of the 37th anniversary in 2007, the chapel has been renovated. Stonework was cleaned and old passageways alongside the chapel have been converted into glass-covered  outdoor areas. Inside, take a seat on one of the college benches, in a room filled with 17th-century artifacts, and watch the short video presentation entitled “athene ann de amstel” (Athens on the Amstel). This is definitely a great destination if you are looking for something different to do. Learn and feel the power that is higher learning in Amsterdam by visiting the Agnieten Kapel.
