An embarrassment of riches

Built by Joel Orr on Thursday, April 13th, 2006

“Insurmountable opportunity” – that’s how I characterize the Internet in terms of its potential.

If you dive in with both feet, as I – and many others – do, you will rapidly find yourself having spent much more money that you thought you would, and having nothing to show for it.

Moreover, you will feel as if the carrot is being dangled in front of you, just beyond your reach – and you will probably burn out. And it won’t take long.

Well, how do you avoid that? It’s not hard – but it takes some discipline. Here is a possible approach.

Set yourself a period of time for learning. Now, you can do this for free – there is a tremendous amount of excellent free information you can find using your nearest search engine. But if you want, buy a course – there are dozens – for under, say $300, and really study it. I suggest 1 to 3 months for this introductory period.

During this period, don’t buy anything other than that one introductory course.

After the introductory period, pick an approach:

* Affiliate marketing

* Content site

* AdSense sites

* Creating and marketing a product

Plan it out, choose your tools, and devote yourself to it, until you can call it a success or a failure.

This is the hard part: Do ONLY that project, until you decide it worked or it didn’t. Then build on that experience.

If you can discipline yourself to do that, instead of buying every ebook and signing up for every email newsletter and listening to every teleseminar, then “your is the world and everything that’s in it!” (thanks, Mr. Kipling).
