It’s a simple enough question, but have you really thought about it lately? So many people go to work just because they have to – not because they want to. Are you one of those people?
You’ll be hard-pressed to find many people who love going to work every single day. However, more and more professionals are realizing that life is too short to be in a miserable job or career field. It’s up to you to make that change.
I’m not going to sit here and say that it’s the easiest thing in the world to stop what you’ve been doing for years and try something new. And to be perfectly honest, it’s not for everyone. You have to decide what is right for you and your current situation.
To start with, you might want to poke around and see what might interest you. If you already know what you might want to pursue, jump on the Internet and research it. How much does it pay? What kind of experience would potential employers expect you to have? Would you have to earn another degree? Those are all things you have to consider. Once you get those answers, you might not feel it’s worth the time, money or effort to move forward. And you know what? That would be okay too.
However, if you do decide to forge ahead, make a to-do list or a list of things to research. For example, you know that you need a degree but do you know where to get one? How are you going to finance it?
Changing careers is a huge transition in one’s life and should not be taken lightly. Make sure your home life can handle the change. Are you financially secure so that you can handle a potential pay decrease? Is your family ready for you to take on this challenge and support you?
Once you’re ready to start applying for jobs, then your resume needs to be re-created. Most likely, it will need to be in a different format, showcase different strengths…but I’ll get into that at a later time.
So tomorrow, as you’re getting ready for work, think about how you feel. Are you satisfied with that feeling or do you think there is so much more that you can do? Think long and hard. After all, it is your life and you deserve to do what you want to do!
