Large, new homes often have vast expanses of window glass that let in light and allow the homeowners an unobstructed view. The only problem with these windows, other than trying to keep them clean, is that at certain times of the day and seasons of the year, too much sun can shine in. Left unchecked, the sun’s rays can heat the house up even while you’re trying to cool it, make living spaces uncomfortable, and damage carpets and furnishings. Because of these facts, people who own homes with large windows need solar window blinds that will keep the sun out when necessary. Most of these blinds are made of PVC and have a smell to them, so homeowners are looking for alternatives.

A lot of people want window coverings that not only block the sun’s rays but which are also an ecologically-sound choice. PVC, while doing a good job of blocking sun, certainly isn’t a green product. One eco-friendly option which is free of PVC would be screens that are constructed using either a cotton-polyester blend or acrylic-coated fiberglass. These solar screens come in many different decorator colors, and they are rated by the amount of light they let in, which is known as the openness factor. A lower openness factor clouds the view while offering the best in UV blockage. A higher openness score means that the UV blockage is low, you’ll have a better view, and you’ll need additional window treatments to provide privacy. Blinds with the lowest openness factor are known as blackout shades.

For anyone who would like to completely eliminate window coverings containing synthetic fibers, a good choice can be Roman shades. These shades contain such natural materials as sisal, grass, organic cotton, linen, cellulosic fibers, and hemp. For this type of blind, you can choose your fabric and have them custom made. Keep in mind that the looser the fabric weave and the lighter the color, the more light that will filter in through them; however, they are still excellent solar screens. One problem with natural fibers is that they are more likely to fade when exposed to the sun. You can alleviate this problem by choosing a very light color that won’t show the fading as badly.

The solar window blinds that you choose can make a big difference in the environment within your home. When purchasing them, you need to consider the amount of light you still want to allow to come in, the type of fabric you prefer, and openness factors. Choosing wisely will still let your home be light and airy, and it will also have a huge impact on your heating and cooling bills.

Replacement trampoline enclosures can be expensive, but having a good one is imperative if you have a trampoline at your home. Trampoline nets prevent lots of injuries that used to happen without them by keeping jumpers contained within the structure rather than letting them bounce off accidentally. Over time though, especially when left exposed to weather for long periods of time, the fabric enclosures are made of wears out, and the nets can end up with holes in them rendering them unsafe. Lots of different generic and name brand replacement nets are available for all sizes of round, rectangular, and even octagonal trampolines.

Features you want to look for when buying a new tramp surround include:
* padded steel poles – Everything on a trampoline needs to be padded, because there’s always a chance of someone landing wrong and ending up being tossed against the protective barriers.
* finely knit mesh netting – You don’t want the mesh to be large enough for fingers and toes to become tangled in it.
* fully enclosed jumping area – No gaps or holes where someone could fall out
* pre-drilled holes for assembly – Makes it easier to put together.

Some of the enclosures you will find claim that they are resistant to the damage caused by UV rays and inclement weather and may even carry 2-year guarantees. With nets you pretty much get what you pay for. Look at the pictures of various systems online, and you’ll see that some of them are much more padded and sturdy-looking than others are, and usually the price tells you a lot about the quality you will be getting. Any enclosure is better than none, but be sure to buy the best you can afford.

As a parent, your main goal is to do right by your children. With that in mind, you feed, house, and clothe them, but there’s a whole lot more to parenting than that. It’s your job to keep them safe as much as possible. Children can get careless and exhibit fearless behavior, because they haven’t yet accepted the concept that they can be injured or killed. Therefore, it’s up to you to provide the safest possible environment in your home and yard. A trampoline is good exercise and a lot of fun, and as long as you equip yours with a solid, well-padded trampoline net, your kids will have hours of jumping fun.

Pretty much anything goes when it comes to painting ideas for bedrooms these days. The era of one basic color with white ceilings has passed into the trend for bright hues and patterned walls making bedroom décor more exciting than it has ever been before. All it takes is a bit of imagination, possibly a theme, and maybe ideas gleaned from pictures you’ll find on the Internet in order to turn a bedroom into a showplace where you can relax, kick back, and dream. The great thing about paint is that it can give your room an entirely new look for not a whole lot of money, so you can feel free to indulge your whims. If you decide you don’t like it any more, you can always cover it up with another coat.

Paint is available in virtually any color you can imagine. One brand even advertised on TV that if you brought anything of the color you wanted into their store, they would match it in paint. With this being true, there’s no reason you can’t get inspiration from a lovely comforter, a favorite figurine, or a floor rug. You don’t want to be afraid of getting a bit radical, because that’s the name of the game now. It’s unnecessary to paint every wall the same. One common method is to paint most of the walls a basic shade and then paint at least a part of one wall with a more vibrant shade. People also achieve this same type of look by painting walls one color part way up and then finishing the tops with something else.

Wallpaper used to be a norm, but not as many people use it any more. It has gotten to be more expensive than what anyone wants to pay, and paints have improved a great deal in usability and durability making them the wall coating of choice. There are so many things you can achieve by just using paint. You could try doing a wall of large squares in alternating colors, use vertical panels of color, add horizontal lines in a contrasting shade, or go all out and paint a mural on an entire wall. Whatever you can dream up, you can create with paint.

Although you may prefer to decorate the rest of your home in a more subdued manner, your bedroom is your oasis, and you can change it to suit yourself. The same is true when you help design a room for a child. For example, you can look at your child’s room as a blank canvas where you you’ll be able to paint a world in which he or she can work, play, sleep, and enjoy alone-time. Make sure you get input from the child when coming up with the décor, because children love to be a part of planning their own spaces. They have a lot of painting ideas for their bedrooms to help make them their own.

The simple fact of the matter is that although real wood is beautiful, it isn’t always a practical choice when it comes to window treatments. Wood is a popular choice for window blinds, but in climates where there is a lot of moisture as well as in rooms of the house, such as the bathroom and kitchen, many of them will warp. Warping cannot be repaired, so the only way to make real wood blinds look nice again would be to replace them, and that’s an expensive endeavor. Instead of dealing with the problems inherent to solid wood, many people are opting for faux window blinds which offer a very similar look, are more affordable, and will not warp.

Heat is another reason to choose faux wood rather than the real thing, because it can dry out the wood which will also cause it to warp, split, or discolor. Although a majority of people have air conditioning, heat from the sun is not their only worry when it comes to wood blinds. If you have a heating vent right under a window, as is often the case, running your central heat in the winter can be damaging to your blinds. Once again, if you choose faux wood blinds, this will not be a problem.

One of the most important factors when using any type of blinds is that they must be precisely the right size. Since they fit on the inside of the window frames, the fit must be perfect or else they won’t go into the opening or else there will be unsightly gaps around the edges of the blinds. If you decide to purchase your faux wood blinds online, most websites will give you the information you need to measure accurately. Interior decorators will try and tell you that blinds need to be professionally-measured, but if you are careful and follow the proper directions, there’s no reason you can’t measure them yourself and save a few dollars.

The most popular faux window blinds are made of a composite of wood and vinyl. Since wood can warp and vinyl can be flimsy and lack durability, using a wood/vinyl alloy tends to give you the best of both worlds without the drawbacks. Faux blinds are available in a limited number of colors which are mostly whites and browns. There is also the option of adding colored tapes which can tie in the blinds with your room decor. The blinds come with smooth or embossed slats, and either way they will add the style of blinds to your home at a lower cost and without the hazard of warping.

What do birthdays, anniversaries, Christmases, retirements, house warmings, new babies, Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, and illnesses all have in common? Do you give up? The answer is that all of these events are occasions you may need to buy gifts for. How often do you get invited to something like this and have no clue what to buy for the honoree? If you’re like most people, it can be really difficult dreaming up something different yet useful to give to the person who is celebrating. These are the kinds of situations, and many others like them, that unique gift baskets have been carefully designed to handle. As long as you know where to find great baskets of gifts online, you’ll never have another worry about what to give someone for any occasion.

One of the reasons that gift baskets are so versatile is that they are prepared with many different occasions and people in mind. Obviously, no one basket will fit all when it comes to gift giving, so the companies that come up with the various containers full of goodies and novelty items look to fulfill a huge variety of needs. They do it by creating theme baskets, such as for golf, gardening, or spa, and then finding the finest quality items to go along with the theme. In addition, they create many offerings around favorite foods, like chocolate, meat, cheese, and coffee. No matter what the celebration is for and who you are gifting, there’s bound to be something that will be perfect.

Gift baskets are easy and convenient to give. If you are unable to attend the event and would prefer to have your present sent, you can have it delivered directly to the recipient’s door. It will arrive in a large box, all wrapped in cellophane and tied with lavish ribbons and bows. You can rest assured that any type of container you choose will be done up this way, so even if you have it delivered to yourself to take to the celebration personally, you won’t have to worry about wrapping your gift. All the work has already been done for you.

So far we haven’t mentioned how much your recipient is going to enjoy your gift. The packages of goodies in your unique gift basket have been gathered from outstanding sources all over the world, and they are not inexpensive treats. The cheeses are high-quality items made in Wisconsin, the chocolates are created by gourmet candy companies, and other items are equally luscious. Every container overflowing with gifts and food items is going to be greeted with great appreciation.

Kitchen cabinets see a lot of hard use. You may not have ever thought about it, but if you were to count the number of times you open and shut a cabinet door in the process of making a meal, you might be amazed. And this doesn’t count the thousands of times your children open cupboards in order to grab a snack, and they often don’t close them as gently as you’d like, either. All of this traffic takes a toll on the exterior of the cabinet surfaces by causing scratches and wear. In addition, cabinets can become outdated making your kitchen look retro rather than modern as you’d prefer. Kitchen cabinet refacing is a process that can give you cabinets that look new at a fraction of the cost of replacing the cupboards themselves.

When you have cabinets refaced, the contractor will cover your existing boxes, doors, and drawer fronts with a wood or laminate veneer that will cover up all of the flaws and aging. Another option is to totally replace the doors and drawers while refurbishing the boxes themselves. By retaining base cabinets, you won’t have to pay to replace your countertops unless you want to, because everything will pretty much stay intact. In fact, while the refacing process is going on, you will still be able to use your kitchen pretty much as you always do. This will save you on the cost of meals out while construction is going on.

If you choose to purchase new cabinet doors, you’ll be able to find either pre-finished or unfinished models to match the wood grain in your cupboard boxes. After all, it’s possible that the boxes themselves aren’t in need of refinishing, because they don’t take the brunt of use like the doors do. If you purchase new prefinished doors, drawer fronts, and hardware, you should be able to remove the old ones and put on the new ones without paying for professional assistance. Companies that sell cabinet doors can also give you the information you need to do the job right.

When you look at your transformed kitchen, you’ll wonder why you waited so long to do kitchen cabinet refacing. After all, the price is right, and you can get a beautiful new look for less than half of what you’d pay for new cabinets.

Any housing contractor will tell you that the time to deal with moisture issues that could befall your basement is during the time the house is being built. The only truly effective way to keep a basement dry in a climate where there’s lots of rain and seepage is by doing below grade waterproofing. It’s easiest to do as the basement is poured and the exteriors of the foundation are still visible; however, you can also waterproof the exterior walls of an existing basement making that area of your home drier, healthier, and more useful. To do the job after the fact is going to take a lot more work and cost considerably more, but it will be worth the added effort to have twice as much livable space in your home.

You’ve probably heard of waterproofing paints, and you may have even thought you’ve stopped the problem by using them. Unfortunately, while interior paints can block seepage into your basement, they still leave the foundation wall itself vulnerable to the negative effects of water damage. Water will still be able to seep into every pore, crack, and crevice in the concrete, undermining the integrity of your foundation. Therefore, it only makes sense that you need to waterproof your walls from the outside so that no water can infiltrate them. Although this isn’t easy after the house is already built, there are firms which specialize in just such projects.

The good news is that there are a few things you can try before going to all the expense of hiring excavators. These include banking soil against your foundation to allow for better water drainage away from your home, adding gutters to your house that are large enough to move water away from the foundation, and building in a sump pump. However, if these measures don’t do the trick, then you’ll have to hire someone to help you. They will need to dig a trench all around your house, coat the foundation with special waterproofing materials, and lay tile in the trench to handle excess water. You can imagine that all of this is going to cost you several thousand dollars, but it will help maintain the solidity of the foundation your home is resting upon.

Below grade waterproofing is a must in many areas, because water tables are often high enough to cause serious basement flooding. By taking preventive measures now, you could be saving yourself a great deal of grief in later years.

However, when it comes to the time to select one of the types of flooring for your home, the job gets a little more difficult. Every kind of wood has special features that make it different from all the rest. Hardness, density, graining, finishing capabilities, and scratch-resistance are only some of the aspects you need to take into consideration. One of the finest choices you can make, though, is a basic wood you’ve probably lived around since childhood – maple. Maple hardwood flooring is beautiful, and it offers you many of the best characteristics you can find in wood.

Maple is a wood that’s known for its strength. It is extremely hard, and has a fine texture and close grain. The grain pattern isn’t wild and showy, but it is still beautiful, uniform throughout the wood, and interesting to look at. The outer layers of the maple tree, called the sapwood, contain extremely light-colored wood while in the heart of the tree (heartwood) it is light brown. Even the darkest part of the maple is quite a light color, the the lightest grade is the wood that’s clear and white. This wood is ivory white and kept in sheds where it won’t discolor. White maple flooring is the finest grade of maple floor materials that is made.

Since maple is such a wonderful wood to use in flooring, woodwork, and furniture, there is a large demand for it. Unfortunately, it is what is known as a single-growth wood. Once we use up the supply that is growing, there won’t be any more of it to take its place. It is estimated by the U.S. government that all of the maple now growing in the United States will be gone within the next 25 years. Its reforestation rate is extremely slow, and there’s just no way we can grow the supply as fast as it’s being used up.

Because of the unmatched strength and beauty of maple, it is excellent for use in schools, on dance floors, and for other high-traffic areas. Obviously, if it can hold up to this kind of use, it will be able to take the traffic in your home, too, without showing the wear. In fact, the more a maple hardwood floor is used, the more polished it becomes.

It doesn’t much matter what kind of a crawl space you have under your home, if you live in a damp climate, you can end up with contaminated air from the space infiltrating your home. This air smells musty, and it’s filled with mold spores. Even if the crawl space area has concrete floors and vents, the simple fact is that when warm air rises in your home, replacement air is drawn from basement areas. As much as 40% of the air you breathe in your home can be drawn upstairs from your crawl space. With these unhealthy facts in mind, it’s easy to see why basement systems have been developed to deal with the issue.

You may wonder why all of this is so critical in the overall environment of your home. Why should you have to lay out money to insulate your crawl space from the elements? The truth is that mold is only one of the problems you can get from contaminated air. An excess of moisture can lead to serious structural damages in your home as it causes boards to warp and decay. In addition, the moisture of a crawl space is a perfect habitat for all manner of critters that can undermine the integrity of your home. This includes not only mold but also fungi and a variety of insects. When you find insects crawling in the upper regions of your home, it’s very likely that they originated in your damp basement or crawl space.

Something needs to be done to stop air from coming into the crawl space from the earth and air that surround it, because that air is sure to be filled with moisture unless you live somewhere very dry. If you think about it, it becomes obvious that some kind of vapor barrier or basement system needs to be installed in order to keep the area dry. If you are building a new home, it’s the ideal time to make sure that your crawl space is moisture-proofed. With a pre-existing home, however, it becomes more of a challenge to take care of the problem, but there are firms which specialize in this type of work.

You work hard to keep your living spaces clean and healthy, and the last thing you need is a lot of contaminant- and moisture-laden air filtering in from your crawl space. If you have reason to suspect that this is taking place in your home, you should check into getting some type of basement system in place as soon as possible.

When it comes time to clean the carpets in your home, there are many types of rug cleaners to consider. You can hire a professional crew to come in and steam clean your carpets, you can rent a machine from a grocery store, you can buy a machine of your own, or you can try one of a multitude of carpet cleaning products available from local stores. It’s a lot to think about, but there are some considerations to make in order to help make your decision easier.

There is little doubt that the most effective way to get carpets clean is by hiring a reputable rug cleaning firm that deep cleans them and sucks the dirty water back out thoroughly. Naturally, this is the most expensive method of cleaning carpets, and a lot of people don’t have the budget to hire cleaning done very often. That is why supermarket rentals continue to be so popular. These are relatively inexpensive to rent and do an okay job of getting dirt out of the rugs. The major drawback to rental machines is that you have to move all of the furniture yourself, so if you aren’t going to be able to get the furniture moved for you, this won’t be a method you’ll want to attempt.

A lot of people are opting to buy their own carpet cleaning machines these days, which makes a lot of sense. Carpet cleaning is not just a one-time job. It’s a task that you’ll be repeating over and over for as long as you live in a home with carpeting which will mean a lot of rentals. Instead, by purchasing a powerful steam vac for between $100 and $150, you can clean your carpets as often as you like. All you need to buy is the cleaning solution to use with it. Once again, you will have to move your own furniture, but these machines are excellent for keeping the high traffic areas of your home clean and fresh. As you probably know, dirt causes carpets to wear out sooner, and since they are a major expense to replace, you want to make them last as long as you can.

That leaves a variety of aerosol and spray types of carpet cleaning chemicals. The easiest ones of these are the kind that you spray on, let dry, and vacuum off. Of course, the suction power you will be using will only be as great as your vacuum cleaner which may not effectively pull dirt from deep down in the pile. While this is the least expensive method and does help some, it is also probably the least effective.
