An all inclusive resort typically includes your accommodations, taxes, meals, activities and entertainment. There are many different things that you should consider before you book one of these resorts.  As it turns out, you may not be saving any money at all and you might in fact be adding unneeded stress to your most relaxing time of the year.  Consider the following:

1. If you were to buy all of your meals every day, estimate how much you would spend.

2. How selective are you and your family about food?  There may only be a few restaurants to choose from at the all-inclusive resorts. What do you do if your family doesn’t like the food there?  Answer  - you stress out–because you already paid for all the meals and you don’t have any other choices on where to eat.

3. What kind of activities do you reguraly plan to do on family vacations?  Do you plan something for every day or maybe just once or twice during the vacation?  Add up your estimated expenditures on activities.

4. As with any deal or contract, you should read all the fine print. Know the facts going in – for example, is anything extra above the price you are quoted. Is room service included, in-room movies, etc.

When you are done evaluating, you can compare prices by adding up all expenses that you would normally incur on a vacation and see how the total matches up to the all-inclusive resort.  If you will save money by going with the all-inclusive resort, be sure to read reviews of each resort before you book.  Unsatisfied customers will let you know exactly what they didn’t like about the place. I had one of those extended warranty plans and called in to the support desk to find out what might be wrong with my comp.  I remember the support technician asking me if I had cleaned my cookied recently.  I had no clue what he was talking about.  As it turned out, I had browsed the Internet for for over a year and a half without ever deleting any cookies.  Not only did I not know what a cookie was, I also didn’t know or understand why it needed to be deleted.

Sometimes with computers it can be better to just know that you have to do something, rather than knowing why. If you aren’t familiar with all the lingo and terms, it can get pretty confusing.

So now, I regularly delete my cookies, also called the cache in all the browsers I use.  Usually in each browser there is a Tools pull down menu that has either Internet Options or Clear Browsing History listed.  When the computer browser gets too full of these cookies, it will take a long time for web pages to load and could even prevent them from loading at all.  Some browsers have automatic settings that let you delete everything, for example, when you exit the browser.  This is a great option if you tend to forget to do these things.  Clearing your cookies, in the end, is a necessary regular step of computer maintenance that will help improve and keep your browsers fresh and loading fast.

I ended up getting a front loading washing machine and anxiously awaited my next water bill.  It was maybe 10% less if that since the price of the water had gone up.  Not much to be excited about. Oh well, right? A reduction does mean less money even if it is only a few bucks.

Next came the furnace – just went out after about 15 years. Honestly, they just don’t make things to last anymore. I again researched online and decided to go with the high efficiency gas furnace.  It was supposed to save 30% on the gas bill.  So, I decided to go with the higher priced gas furnace and anxiously awaited my gas bill.  It was slightly, almost neglible, less than the previous bill.  What was different was my electric bill–which was nearly double what it normally is. It turns out that the high efficiency gas furnace uses less gas to power the furnace by switching to an electric powered blower to circulate the air. 

As it turns, out my expenditures in so-called “hi-efficiency” appliances were not so well-spent after all. I have not noticed any overall benefit of spending more money on these appliances.  I could have saved thousands of dollars by just going with regular models.  Anyone else have the same experience? Anyways, here are 5 sure signs that there is something wrong with your computer and what the problem might be.

1. The computer/speakers won’t turn on. I’ve had this happen many times only to find out that the power cord was loose.  It seems rather obvious- it works better when it is plugged in– but save yourself the time and embarrasment of hauling your computer in to get repaired to find out it needs to be plugged in. Another check- make sure the outlet it is plugged in is properly functioning. Try plugging something else into the outlet.

2. Blue screen. Anytime your computer has a blue screen – there is something wrong.  Things that I have done to fix the blue screen is to restore the computer to an earlier version- when computer was working or simply reformatting. If you have installed anything recently- this could be the culprit.

3. It takes forever for anything to load. Browsers, emails, documents, etc. – if it takes forevever, then something might be wrong. Try clearing your internet cache, empty recycle bin, see how many programs are running at the same time (task manager)- these are just a few suggestions.  Also, your computer might need a memory upgrade. This can be fairly easy to do yourself.  There are even online videos that show you exactly how to add more memory to your computer.

4. Everytime you open a browser, your selected home page gets changed.  This is a sure sign that you have some sort of ad ware, virus or even trojan on your computer. Get a good virus scanner installed and clean up your computer fast.

5. Pop Up Messages. One time when I was on a computer all sorts of pop up messages kept coming up. I remember trying to stop them by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Delete at the same time. The pop up message then said press those keys again and see what happens.  As it turns out my computer was majorly infected with who knows what. I quickly reformatted it and everything was ok then.

In short, until they create a computer that doesn’t mess up, we will have to deal with all these little maintenance steps.

Lawsuits.  A great way to find out about how a franchisor treats its franchisees is to research any impending lawsuits against the company.  Then if you have a list of lawsuits in hand, ask the sales rep from the franchisor the next time you talk to him or her, if any franchisees have filed lawsuits against them.  If they say no- well you have the info right there.

6. Better Business Bureau. Another great way to check up on the franchisor. Check to see if there have been any complaints filed against the franchisor in the last 5 years.

6. Verify Company details. Sometimes a troubled franchisor will incorporate a brand new company and bring the franchise business along.  The old company, with a bad reputation is closed up or left dwindling.  Verify when the current company was started, who the founders are and any other details about the company. Verify the truthfulness of the franchisor by asking these questios (which you already know the answers)
