Autism and how dietary changes may help

If you have an autistic child you may find that dietary changes helpful in managing their autism.

Preliminary research has found that some autistic children may be allergic or sensitive to certain foods. In some cases, the removal of these foods from their diet has shown improvement in some behaviors.



Check with your doctor regarding a trial hypoallergenic diet. Any such diet should only be done under a doctor’s supervision.

Some autistic children also suffer from chronic diarrhea. Studies have shown that children with autistic spectrum disorders and persistent diarrhea may benefit from glucosamine.

Research has shown that vitamin B6 can be helpful for autistic children. Some researchers have added magnesium to vitamin B6 and have found that taking both nutrients may have better effects than taking B6 alone. Many doctors will suggest vitamin B6 or the combination of B6 and magnesium for at least three months to see whether these nutrients on beneficial to your particular autistic child.
