Baby Pacifier – How to Choose?

Built by Margaret Dunn on Friday, December 5th, 2008

Babies still love their pacifiers, binkies, nuks, etc. Baby pacifiers provide a source of comfort for some children, a chew toy for others and a concern for some parents who believe pacifiers are going to hurt their child’s teeth at some point.

Baby pacifiers are still popular because most babies just use them for a short period of time, perhaps one or two years. They are not a product that creates a life long problem for most parents. At some point the decision has to be made on when to take the pacifier away. That is an individual decision but most parents try to start weaning their little ones off the pacifier when the baby has most of his/her teeth.

Baby pacifiers have recently been proven to help prevent sudden infant death syndrome. The pacifiers are usually raised enough that if a blanket were to cover the baby’s face, there would still be a small air pocket that would keep the baby from suffocating. That is just one of the reasons. There are others as well and there have been a number of studies done (just go to google and type in pacifiers and sids and see all of the returns). The subject is still under study but last year alone it is believed that over 5,000 babies were saved from SIDS because of pacifier use. You can find out more about SIDS by visiting http://babypacifiersinfo.blogspot.com/

There are some baby pacifiers that are designed to aid in the eruption of teeth and gently help the teeth come through the baby’s gums. In addition, there are different styles of pacifiers. There are bulb shaped and orthodontic shaped pacifiers. Some pacifiers have raised surfaces for baby to chew on and others are smooth. One thing that is known for sure is that babies in any country love their pacifiers. You can find more pacifier information and some very cute pacifiers by clicking here.

Hey Bella, Thanks for sharing, I checked out www.bye-bye-binky.com (not only was it free, but they didn't even ask for my email, thank goodness). We followed the poke and cut steps and three days later she was done, and the decision was hers. She even refused a binky at daycare yesterday! I tried to give her one during a major meltdown last night, but it seems even I have lost one of my best soothing tools (lol, it's all good though). Thanks for sharing... Jill

My friend emailed me a link to a site that has a publication on losing the binky (it is free, makes money by advertisements). I have not tried it yet because my son is only 6 months old, but I think I will try the method out when he is around 1. It is www.bye-bye-binky.com for anyone who is interrested. If you do, let me know your thoughts....Bella
