There are many different safety measures for the bathroom cabinet that holds medicines. In an effort to prevent injury, harm, and potentially fatal situations from arising with you and the members of your family, it is important that you consider these safety measures and adhere to them. When we think of medicine cabinet safety, we often think of protecting children from the contents within them. However, adults can also experience injury, harm, and potentially fatal situations from the items contained within this space in the home. Here, I will share with you some safety measures for the bathroom cabinet that holds medicine.

The first safety measure for the bathroom cabinet that holds medicine is to check the expiration dates that are on all of the different types of medications contained in this area. Check over-the-counter medications, prescription medicines, and even medicated products such as lotions, eye drops, and similar items. If you find that a particular product has exceeded the date, you should throw these items away. If you take old medications, not only will they prove to be ineffective, but they could actually make you and other members of your family very sick! By simply getting rid of the products, you are limiting the possibility of dangerous situations to occur.

This is especially important if you have children and/or teenagers in the home. While children will often look in medicine cabinets just out of curiosity, there are many teenagers that may look in a medicine cabinets for medications that they can abuse. The recent trend among teens is seeking out cold medicines and taking large amounts of them in an effort to reach a level of euphoria, or “high”. If you put a lock on this bathroom cabinet, you are likely to avoid these complications.

When working to ensure safety in the medicine cabinet in your home, it is important to ensure that all the medications in the home remain in the original packaging that they came in. For example, do not mix in prescription pain pills with over-the-counter pain medication so that it is easier to carry. If you do this, whoever takes medicine from this particular bottle may stand a chance of overdosing, being hospitalized, or even dying from the drug.
