Be A Responsible Driver – Get A Personal Injury Protection Plan

Built by francisco on Monday, May 12th, 2008

Accidents on the road are a fact of life, not matter how good a driver you are so isn’t it a good idea to look after yourself with a personal injury protection plan? We all have many responsibilities these days which we cannot dismiss, not to mention looking after our families as well. PIP’s (personal injury protection) are a standard part of some plans which also include terminal illness and disability cover and this might be a more efficient way to purchase this type of insurance. These insurance plans are all worthwhile but the average American family cannot always justify the additional strain on their monthly budget.

Unfortunately however, it can be very costly in other ways if the cover is not appropriate or does not cover the intended items. Throughout most parts of America today, injury insurance has become required by law but the cover required seems to vary considerably from state to state. This disparity is best illustrated by the huge difference in cover required by citizens in Alaska compared to those Florida where ten times as much is needed. While there are a few states left that do not require personal injury protection by law yet, it is only a matter of time but that does not mean you cannot have this peace of mind right now.

However, the protection does not cover all the costs for the insured and his (or her) passengers, with the average policy paying up to eighty percent of expenses. There are some expensive items covered by this plan, which will pay out even if the policy holder is to blame, including medical costs for the driver and people in the vehicle with him. Some plans will cover some if not all these aspects and it is worth checking these fully before any additional insurance plans are started. By checking carefully you may discover that certain costs like medical bills and other expenses are already part of your current cover.

If you were to discover this it may only be necessary to take out a minimal cover personal injury policy and possibly not require one at all. Your current driving record may also determine whether you need to organize personal injury protection. Health insurance plans will often cover the main policy holder as the driver and providing the passengers are relatives, it will usually cover them as well if they are injured. You will need to check these details and not hope for the best because if the personal injury protection does not extend to them adequately, there could be problems.

It is not unfair to assume that any person traveling in your vehicle should be the responsibility of the driver and insured individual. Ensuring you have adequate personal injury protection if you are a driver should not just be about the legal requirement for you to have it, even if you are in a state that has not made it mandatory yet. How much insurance you need depends, mainly on your age, so if you are middle-aged or older, have good health and liability insurance policies, then you will probably only need minimal injury insurance. Younger, less experienced drivers often have to pay considerably more owing to their inexperience and probable meager health insurance cover but need to start looking to the future for themselves and their family by taking out as much insurance as they can afford.
