Beware of Fake Test Strips

Built by Perriann Rodriguez on Thursday, October 19th, 2006

It seems that there is always a certain risk associated with any over the counter or prescription medication that we take. The products could be tainted, the wrong prescription or simply a placebo.

Recently, the government has reported fake test strips, used for monitoring blood sugar levels, and warns diabetic patients to be on the lookout for these strips.

Honestly, who are these people that would produce fake test strips and why would they do such a thing?

Beware of Counterfeit Test Strips

Test strips are commonly used to monitor blood sugar levels and are a vital part of managing diabetes.

The Government has issued a warning about counterfeit test strips being used with various models of LifeScan Inc.’s OneTouch brand of blood glucose monitors. LifeScan is part of New Brunswick, N.J.-based Johnson & Johnson.

The counterfeit test strips could give incorrect blood glucose values, leading patients to take too little or too much insulin and suffer injury or death, the Federal Drug Administration said.

These are the listed counterfeit test strips to be on the look out for:

OneTouch Basic/Profile, lot numbers 272894A, 2619932 and 2606340. The 50-count packages are labeled in English and French.

OneTouch Ultra, lot number 2691191. The 50-count packages are labeled in English, Greek and Portuguese.

If you have any of the above test strips, you should stop using them immediately, replace them and contact your doctor.
