Bread Pudding is a favorite old fashioned dessert that seems to be making a comeback lately. It’s easy to make and you no doubt have all the ingredients on hand. It’s delicious when served warm or cold and with or without sauce. Here is a recipe for bread pudding along with two sauce recipes.

Bread Pudding

Ingredients

2 plus cups of stale bread cubes

2 eggs, beaten

1/3 cup sugar

¼ teaspoon cinnamon

¼ teaspoon nutmeg

1/8 teaspoon salt

2 cups milk

1 teaspoon vanilla

Directions

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly grease (with butter) a one quart casserole dish. Place the bread cubes in the casserole. In a small bowl combine all the remaining ingredients and beat well. Pour the mixture over the bread cubes. Place the casserole dish in a baking pan filled with about one inch of hot water. Bake for 55 to 65 minutes or until a knife in the center of the casserole comes out clean. Serve warm with one of the following sauces.

Kahlua Sauce

Ingredients

¼ cup of sugar

1 tablespoon corn starch

¾ cup strong coffee

2 to 4 tablespoons of Kahlua (coffee liqueur)

Directions

In a small saucepan, combine the sugar and corn starch. Stir in the coffee. Cook, stirring constantly, over medium heat until the mixture comes to a boil. Stir in the Kahlua. Spoon over the bread pudding. Can be warm or cool.

Rum Sauce

Ingredients

2 cups powdered sugar

1/8 teaspoon salt

½ cup butter or margarine (softened)

1 tablespoon water

2 tablespoons rum (you can leave out the rum if desired)

1 teaspoon vanilla

Directions

In a small bowl combine all the ingredients. Beat with a mixer on high speed until well blended. Chill until ready to serve. Spoon over the bread pudding to serve.
