How to Conquer the Real Threat to Your Success

I don’t know Eli Manning personally. But I know a thing or two about what it takes to become a champion, as he did by winning the Super Bowl on Sunday night.

In my 33 years of experience as a professional sports psychologist, I have counseled and trained many professional football players and world champion athletes. They all face challenges, adversities and setbacks during their careers, but a particular problem for many athletes is “imposter fear” – a psychological obstacle advisors may find familiar.

Imposter fear occurs when – no matter how much confidence or even swagger an athlete may display to teammates, opponents, coaches, or his fans – self-doubt nags at him, and he worries that he will be exposed as inadequate to the challenges he faces. In Eli’s case, he was always compared to his older brother and prior to his previous Super Bowl victory, pundits wondered if his performance under pressure would compare to Tom Brady’s. Advisors can also experience “imposter fear” – worrying that their success owes to luck and somehow they’ve fooled others into believing they are skilled advisors. It’s only a matter of time before that luck runs out and they are exposed. This fear causes performance anxiety and constant fear of failure.

I have helped many athletes overcome their impostor fear and consistently perform at their best. The same set of skills I teach them can help advisors, too.

For example, I was recently invited to consult with a wealth management firm whose president was concerned about inconsistent performance from a large percentage of his advisors. Moreover, because of the ailing economy and a roller-coaster stock market, his assets under management were declining sharply.

Following a series of confidential interviews with a broad sample of advisors in the firm, it became clear to me that many suffered from anxiety, because of the harsh market conditions and because of the president’s high performance expectations, but also because they harbored their own internal insecurities. I designed a series of training programs to teach the advisors how to recognize and overcome their fears, maintain an optimistic and proactive approach with their clients, use active listening skills, overcome stress and anxiety related to their job and ultimately lead to their clients directing new referrals to them.

But the most important issue I helped these advisors overcome? You guessed it: impostor fear.

Understand your fear, take charge of your fear

Most advisors project confidence, but if they are honest with themselves, they will acknowledge having insecurities – reluctance to contact clients during market collapses, for example, or fear they won’t be able to answer a client’s question. Such doubts raise their anxiety level when they come to the office and find that the market is tanking. This is imposter fear.

Like most fears, the “imposter fear” is based on false beliefs; in this case that you are really not as competent as you appear. The most effective way to eradicate any fear is to understand the distorted thinking that causes it in the first place.

It’s not the economy or stock market that determines how confident or insecure you feel in your advisory practice. It is your internal dialogue, or your “self talk” about these issues, that determines whether you will thrive or struggle during difficult times.

That little voice in your head is what I call your “internal critic,” and most of the time it fills you with self-doubt.

Let’s take an example of my work with advisors at the firm I mentioned earlier. Matt (not his real name) worked in the firm for seven years. His performance was inconsistent, and his manager put him on notice that he needed to improve – the roller-coaster stock market notwithstanding. Like many people with “imposter fear,” Matt admitted to me that he frequently told himself: “I’m not as good an advisor as everyone says thinks I am. Now my boss has figured that out.” This is a textbook example of self-limiting thoughts, a crucial mental roadblock that many encounter when they experience stress.

Other examples of negative, self-limiting thoughts we often use are those that begin with…“What if…” “I hope I don’t…” ”I should have …” “I always have problems with…” and “I probably won’t be able to…”

I taught Matt to catch himself thinking such negative thoughts. In response, I had him make a fist as a reminder to “STOP thinking this way,” then take a few, deep, calming breaths, release the fist, relax, and proceed to substitute a more positive and optimistic thought. This technique only takes seconds, and it works instantly!

The key here was Matt’s ability to recognize his negative thinking. That recognition let him consciously substitute a more realistic counter-thought, such as:

“The fact that my manager has put me on notice doesn’t mean I am not cut out for this career. I’ve had many successful years in this business. I can use my creative ability to work with my clients in a proactive way, before the market tanks. I will gain their trust and show them how they can make money by making smart purchases in a down market. As a result, they will continue to do business with me, despite the stock market fluctuations, and my numbers will grow and be much more consistent.”

Kristen, an alias for another advisor in the firm, would think negatively whenever she was prospecting for new clients. She might ask herself, “What if the prospective client doesn’t commit to working with me after I discuss his situation with him?”I taught her to change this negative thinking habit with the following:“STOP this foolish thinking right now.” (Make a fist. Take a few relaxing breaths. Release the fist.) “Just relax. I don’t have to have 100% success in order to feel good about my skills. It’s a numbers game. If this one doesn’t pan out, I will have another opportunity. Just keep plugging away, I know I will get more clients.”

Just like Matt, once Kristen practiced this thought-stopping technique, she found herself much less anxious and much more confidant.

It is also helpful to keep a written record or journal detailing your successes and accomplishments during each workday. This is important because so many people, at the end of a long day, obsess about what they did wrong or what they did not accomplish. After games, successful athletes focus on what they did accomplish and build on that, rather than obsess over mistakes or missed opportunities.

Remaining optimistic after setbacks

Every athlete experiences adversity, as does every advisor. You lose clients; you struggle with a tough question. Successful advisors don’t expect to be perfect, but they fully expect to do well, regardless of the economy, the stock market, new fiduciary regulations – whatever stumbling blocks will inevitably lie in their way. They recognize that losing a client is all part of being in the business. They don’t let setbacks overshadow their accomplishments.

Advisors with positive expectations develop positive self-fulfilling prophecies and succeed most of the time. Reflecting on recent successes and achievements is a much better idea than obsessing over failures or setbacks. With practice, thought-stopping can help you convert negative thought processes into this kind of positive thinking.

Two months after I conducted the training program I describe above, I conducted another round of interviews with the advisors. Most were able to get in touch with the thoughts that were driving their imposter doubts and were using thought-stopping and counter-thought techniques to eradicate their fears. Both their morale and their numbers improved dramatically, even though the stock market remained just as volatile as it had been when they struggled.

As accomplished as he is, even Eli Manning surely had flashes of self-doubt as he prepared to take the field on Sunday night, and likely more in moments when the breaks didn’t seem to be going his way. What makes a successful quarterback is the ability to build off successes and forget about mistakes. Eli Manning became a world champion by learning to banish his doubts. What potential can those same skills help you unlock?

Beer has always been a dependable, thirst-quenching drink for Northern Europeans. Southern Europeans could grow grapes in their warmer climate and went down that path instead. The reason for drinking beer or wine rather than water, tea or coffee was simple.
Water was normally contaminated with urine and faeces and people did not know that boiling it cleansed it and beer and wine were brewed with boiled water and it would keep without going brackish, because of the alcohol in it. Tea and coffee were either unavailable or too expensive.
These regional tendencies carry on to this day although they go back thousands of years. The lines have blurred with international travel and trade, but they are still clear to see.
I now live in Asia, where people drink as much| as they do anywhere else in the world, but every time I go for a beer, guaranteed, 100% guaranteed, someone, an Asian, will say: “White men love their beer, don;t they”.
This is not intended as a criticism, it is a statement of amazement. Where I live Asians drink a local whiskey. They have all heard of white men drinking beer, but in the countryside, where I am, most people have never experienced personally.
Having said that, promoting is making beer gain ground each year particularly among the young and here are a couple of new accessories to make your beer-drinking experience more pleasurable.
The first is a collapsible beer glass, also called the port-a-pint. This ‘glass’ collapses to fit in your pocket, so that if you are ever stuck for a clean glass on your journeys you have your own.
It always raises a smile and is a great conversation starter in any country you happen to be. The port-a-glass comes in a carry case to keep it clean.
How about if you need both hands while you are holding a beer but are not near a table? The floor is often not safe, so you have to neck your beer and not savour it. What if you could wear something about your waist like a kangaroo pouch, but which would hold your beer secure? You can now, if you have a ‘Hoodle’.
How about a belt for beer imbibers? You’ve seen chippies with hammers and other tools hanging off their waist? Well, this is comparable. The Beer Belt will hold six tins or bottles, will take an opener and has a zippered pocket for a credit card and a cell phone, in case you run out some distance from replenishments.
Alternatively, you could get a Remote Controlled Beer Cooler. The cooler can hold 12 bottles or tins and can be called from up to 30 feet away. You click a button and have it come to you and all the time, the beer remains cool. Fantastic for sitting in the backyard, eh?
If you get pleasure from a beer you will love any of these unusual gifts for beer drinking aficionados. Great gifts for your Dad or boozy old uncle as well. If you would like to know more search the Internet.

Setting up your own consulting business can present a real challenge, but with proper management, it can become a very lucrative venture. Self-motivation and organizational skills are a must for anyone wanting to start up a consulting company. You must possess a high level of skills in the area in which you are planning to become a consultant, be able to reason and make good decisions, and the ability to interact well and communicate with everyone from prospective clients to vendors to employees. If you feel you have these qualifications, then it just may be a smart idea for you to look into investing your own consulting business.

If you are looking to become a consultant in the field of marketing, you not only need to have expertise in the field yourself, but you also need to understand product positioning strategies. This is the ability to create a competitive image of a target audience which you have set up in advance. You must also be able to gauge the product a company offers as well as what it's competitive strategy needs to be. This strategy will then be uppermost in your mind as you design an appropriate marketing campaign for the company. Other skills that are must-haves to marketing consultants include skills in drafting press releases, the ability to solve problems as well as to comprehend the needs and best course of action for the firm, and the ability to convince customers to buy into the firm's business proposition.

Maybe your expertise lies in the area of finance. If you can give customers the financial support they need regarding the generation of revenue, cutting production costs, accelerating growth in sales, and increasing cash flow, you just may have what it takes. You will need to know about cutting-edge solutions to accounting problems so that you can give advice on better management practices, inventory management, improved cost controls, and enhancing internal communication. A financial consultant needs to be well-versed in all areas of best business practice in order to guide customers onto a new level of profitability.

Software constulting is an art which requires astute business sense in order to make sure that supply doesn't exceed demand. A prospective entrepreneur in this market niche should start by offering a wide base of services in order to probe the market and find an area in which to specialize. Starting with numerous services will allow you to narrow your focus as you weed out those which aren't proving so profitable. By narrowing your focus on one specific, carefully-chosen area, you'll be able to become extremely competent in your area of choice which will convince your customers that they will receive the best delivery of services from you. Businesses like hiring experts from outside their companies which means they will only need to employ them for the duration of a particular product. You will be a wise and wealthy consultant indeed if you recognize and fulfill this need.

The field is always wide open for the expertise of highly-qualified consultants. If you have the background and the experience which can help you fill the bill, starting your own consulting business will be a promising start to a financially-secure future.

If you happen to be someone who's looking at going back to school to get a degree so that you can find a job that pays you what you're worth, you might want to consider working towards a degree in management consulting. A management consultant is the person who has the responsibility to fill technical gaps that are in various organizations in order to increase efficiency and productivity. Management consulting is a field that is growing quickly, and employees at the top consulting firms can expect to earn a premium wage and benefits. Becoming a top-notch consultant requires the proper education and work experience, but it can be well worth the effort.

Consulting firms are rated based the the amount of profits they post, the businesses they acquire, and the amount of returns received on investments. While these companies started out billing their clients only for man-hours and supplies, the approach to earnings has now shifted to include a more result-oriented pricing scale in addition to time and materials. Some of the top-rated companies in the country, based on these criteria, include:

1. PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP – offers tax, assurance, and business consulting services and is considered to be one of the largest providers worldwide. It is in operation in 154 countries with an employee base of 161,000. In 2010 the company accrued a profit of $26.6 billion. Given the fact that the company provides mainly consulting jobs in the accounting field, it often hires Cas, CFAs, and lawyers.

2. Booz and Company - ranks as the oldest management consulting firm still in existence, and it was responsible for the initial coining of the term “management consultant”. Founded in 1914, it offers consulting services to both public and private concerns, operates in 33 countries, and employs in excess of 3,200. One sector of the Booz operation offers consulting services only to the United States government.

3. Accenture - is the top management consulting firm in the world and the one that people hear the most about. It's a leader in the fields of business process engineering and systems integration and operates in more than eighty countries worldwide. Although Accenture originally began as a spin off company from the famous firm of Arthur Andersen Consulting, it surpassed it's parent company in both presence and revenue in 2001.

Educating yourself to work at firms like these can be a savvy career choice for those who have an aptitude for working with others and an interest in joining a field that is really just coming into its own.

Distractions are everywhere and for professionals who have “Shiny Object Syndrome” (SOS) the world is a dangerous place. Slick, pervasive marketing campaigns attract even the most educated and otherwise disciplined executives to chase the next best thing. This segment of the market buys into and then often pays for the promises of new technology, coaching or other products and services which seem to answer their problems.

It is important to recognize which of your clients have SOS. They will often give you direction and ask you to begin a project. Yet, before you complete the task at hand and can test or implement what you have created, your client is enamored with something new, and probably expensive. They change direction. You are now on a new project using a new technology or tool or method. There is a learning curve associated with this that you really cannot reasonably bill the client for. And if you are able to bill the client, these are not necessarily good billable hours. Your client may experience disappointment because they are continuously investing in his business growth but never really seeing results. This happens because he (or she) does not allow the seeds he has planted through each project you have completed to come to fruition. Instead, he simply wants to keep trying new things without properly measuring his success or failure in the last endeavor.

Here is the first way to manage a client with SOS. Help them establish clarity of focus and build a system to measure all opportunities in an objective manner. This will help him separate the real opportunities from the illusions.

Schedule time with each client and engage in an active listening session. Ask the client to share their goals with you. These should include project goals, business objectives and their perceived life purpose. Be sure that these goals are clear and measurable. This will serve as your baseline for measuring success in future projects. Document the conversation and review the main points with your client to make sure they are accurate.

When you client approaches you with a new idea, take some time to listen. If you hear your client talking about “how” to accomplish a result without sharing “why” they want to accomplish this result, you may have a case of SOS on your hands. Those who are suffering from SOS typically spend a majority of their time selling others on the benefits of a particular way of solving a problem. They begin to sound like a commercial for that which they want to purchase.

While being open to their ideas, you should ask them how this new idea helps them accomplish their project goals, business objectives or life purpose. You should ask them;

“On a scale of 1-5 how aligned with your goals, objectives and purpose are the outcomes you imagine this will create?” (In this case, “1” represents “No Alignment” and “5” represents “Perfect Alignment.”)

If they have offered a rating of 4 or 5, follow this question with,

“Please describe in detail why you believe this is true.”

Ask for clarifying points anywhere you are unsure of what they mean or if you feel that they need to analyze their reasoning more. You should support their enthusiastic vision, but at the same time help them see past the marketing rhetoric to the reality of the results that are likely from engaging in the project.

If, by the end of the discussion, both of you are convinced it is a good idea you should move forward with it. However, before you do, establish clear objectives including time frames for testing, implementing, and allow results to show up. Failure is often a result of not thinking clearly at the outset of a project and then changing too many things too quickly.

In the next article, I will share another strategy for dealing with clients with SOS that will save you both time and energy.

Modern enterprises are characterized because their management has been seriously concerned that its human resource this fully integrated with all the demands

Modern enterprises are characterized because its management has taken seriously its human resource this fully integrated with all the demands of the knowledge management demand to ensure that actions operation enabling him, not only in the conquest of new markets, but remain in them according to the dynamic, proactive, requirements to the great challenges that competitiveness has created.

In this letter, we enter briefly analyse the relevance and scope of knowledge management.

Annotations, basic considerations definitions and scope

Organizational knowledge is measured by the intellectual capital of the Organization

The information and knowledge are becoming the main elements of the assets of the companies.

What is it meant by knowledge management?

It is the process by which we acquire, generate, store, share and use knowledge, information, ideas and experiences to improve the quality of the implementation and development of the Organization’s mission.

It is necessary that through knowledge management avoids waste it, lose it, quite the contrary, learn from it, improve decision-making, all of this, as a wealth of personal and also organizational growth, capitalising on the potential of human resources, empowering the subjects with which we are working and improving the quality of our work. All in all, manage well to grow all. Share to learn. Learn and share again; share to return again to learn and feed, and again, the endless spiral of knowledge.

You can also define as: “the set of processes and systems that allow an organization Intellectual Capital to increase significantly, through the management of their capacities for solving problems efficiently (in the smaller possible time space), with the ultimate goal of generating sustainable competitive advantages in time”.

All this tells us, makes the development of knowledge with the aim of using it in the achievement of sustainable competitive advantages, not merely accumulate knowledge without applying it.

Manage knowledge comes to the management of all intangible assets that add value to the organization when it comes to get abilities or skills essential, distinctive. It is therefore a dynamic concept.

With regard to the relevance and scope of the management of knowledge reminds us Alejandro Pavez Salazar, of the Technical University Federico Santa María, tells us, that we should not forget, that today, organizations are faced with the prevailing need for competitive advantages of long term, which can be adapted, in its nature, to the changes their environment of action required. This is not defined in the current level of requirements imposed by the environment organizations, because history will bear witness to that since the beginning of agreements called organizations has counted on that factor of adaptation.

In this era where organizational development has faced this dynamic, there is a targeted approach to reducing the risks at the enterprise level: the knowledge management.

Within the literature of business administration, the concepts of organizational learning, knowledge management, and measurement of Intellectual Capital, have become the center of interest. The great attention that this involves not only reflected in academic publications, but also in the increasing number of conferences and websites specializing in this field, as well as published articles and forums in magazines and relevant newspapers, in addition, workshops, seminars and conferences on the subject.

This, undoubtedly, is a novel and complex area of research whose pregnancy was launched at the beginning of the 1990s in countries such as Sweden and United States. In Venezuela, existing research in this area is very low, despite the considerable interest, both in academia and the business

Starting a new small business can be an exciting adventure. It can also be very time consuming and overwhelming. Before you get wrapped up in setting up shop, you should be familiar with the top reasons that business’ fail. Most of the reasons listed below are within your power and control to fix. The question will be do you have the right fix?

1. No written business plan. While ideas that are in your head might just be ground-breaking, it is very important that you write out and analyze the plans you have for a small business. Maybe once you put it in writing, it won’t sound like such a great idea, or maybe you will see some major flaws in your plan that were not even a consideration before you wrote a business plan.

2. No research. It might be a great idea to you and even a few other people. But is it a great idea to the majority of people out there? This requires some good old fashioned research. Find out what people need, want and are willing to pay for. Without demand for your product or services, your business will dry up pretty quickly.

3. Pricing strategy. If you are selling the same exact product or service as someone else and your price is twice as much, you will need to go an extra mile to distinguish your business from others. There needs to be a clear and distinctive advantage for buying from your company that goes above and beyond pricing. Don’t expect to dominate a market with higher than average prices. If anyone has taught us this it would be Netflix. The increase in price alone of their monthly services created massive cancelations, losses and more.

4. Get organized. Running a business takes much more than just a great idea. You need to be highly organized and skilled. If you can’t take care of the financial aspects of the business, you should hire the appropriate people, i.e. attorneys, accountants, etc. to take care of things for you. Also important is to stay on top of inventory, product availability, etc. Having an inventory control method that keeps you stocked at important times is vital to a successfully run business.

5. Invest your time. If you expect ot spend a few hours every week running a business- then you better think again. Even the best ideas for small business require a LOT OF TIME. If you aren’t willing to put in the time, chances are you will eventually fail at a bueiness venture.

In short, starting a business might be the only option for many unemployed people, as it gives you the chance to use your own ideas to generate an income, which in today’s society is an all-important factor for survival.

Why on Earth would anyone want to ‘grow worms’ or make pets of worms? It is a decent question. After all, you are not able to take them for a walk and they will almost certainly never recognize you, because they are blind.

However, there are good reasons for establishing a worm farm.

Gardeners know that earthworms are useful for the soil. They also know that red worms will break down vegetable material in the compost heap. Anglers know that worms make good bait for freshwater fish and teachers will bear out the fact that children like to observe a small home worm farm.

Environmentalists will also tell you that the worm population is in decline in some areas because of the excessive use of insecticides and other pollutants such as acid rain.

Therefore, if you would like more than one or two worms to put in a glass case for children to observe, the best place to buy them is from a worm farm. And there is big money in it too.

Obviously, I am talking about two sorts of worm farms here. There is the small worm farm glass box, like an ant farm, used for educational purposes in the realm of natural science and the large-scale, industrial farms intended to supply worms to industries and shops.

Who would invest in a worm farm and why? Well, schools, parents and small zoos may do so for educational purposes. After all, it does not cost a lot to feed worms with a couple of dead leaves and they are not violent. Health and safety is not an aspect that relates to a table-top glass worm farm.

Industrial size worm farms do not have to be that big. You could have one in the back yard and Breed millions of worms to sell. You could sell them to gardeners who have poor soil; to fishing tackle stores; to a zoo for food and to apartment-owners with window boxes.

Large zoos probably already have their own worm farms to feed to lizards, snakes, birds and some mammals, but they would be pleased to know where there is a back-up supply should all their worms die for some reason or other.

Someone who breeds birds, reptiles or amphibians would also benefit from a small worm farm. It is such a lot easier and cheaper to ‘grow your own’ than have to purchase them from a pet shop, which probably also has its own worm farm.

Farmers who rear chickens would also benefit from a worm farm, because the chickens could get fed on organically fed worms and a nearby supply would deter the chickens from wandering far from home, which means a better harvest of eggs for the farmer.

Once you can see the benefits of worm farming, you can lift your horizon from the modest earthworm and think of cultivating special worms like the red ones in the compost bucket or the ones that foreign birds and reptiles like. The more specialist you become, the more you are able to charge.

Owen Jones, the writer of this piece writes on a number of topics, but is at present concerned with how to get rid of pests.
