A Quick How To

Visit any video game outlet and you’re bound to get overwhelmed by the hundreds of choices available – especially if you’re new to gaming. Interestingly, children and teens seem to know their way around these places as if they were their second home. But for the adult, the typical video store looks like some sort of color paint explosion and sooner or later, all the games start to look the same. This guide is for the adult who’s buying a game for a younger person perhaps as a birthday gift or as a bribe. Whatever the reason, you’re going to appreciate the following tips.

1. Research this strange phenomenon before setting foot inside a video store. There’s plenty of information available about video games online, so to reduce frustration offline, fire up your web browser and do a little homework. Visit the website of the gaming outlet nearest you and then look for a link to the games section of the system that your youngster plays. Here’s a helpful chart to explain what all those strange letters mean.

Wii = Nintendo’s Wii System
EA Sports = Entertainment Arts System
PS3 = Playstation 3 System
XBOX 360 = Microsoft’s XBOX 360 System
PC = Personal Computer
PS2 = Playstation 2 System
PSP = Playstation Portable System
DS = Nintendo’s DS System

The key is to locate the system on the store’s website first. The system, it’s accessories, and all of the games that work on that system will follow. If not, you may need to use the website’s internal search engine.

2. After locating the appropriate games section for your youngster’s machine, check out the ratings of each game and create a temporary shopping list of age appropriate material. The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) gives each game a rating in an effort to inform parents what their children are playing. Here’s a handy reference to what the ratings mean:

C = Appropriate for Early childhood
E = Appropriate for Everyone
E 10+ = Appropriate for Everyone aged 10 and older
T = Appropriate for Teens
M = Appropriate for Mature Adults

3. Within your temporary shopping list, try find a game that’s built from the latest movie release. Little people love the new animated movies put out by Disney and Pixar, and they really enjoy re-living precious moments in the movie in a video game. That’s why when these movies come out on DVD, their producers put a few games in the “Special Features section” of the CDs.

4. If you can’t find a game that’s built from a movie that the child likes, try to find a game that centers around a popular cartoon character or one that attempts to educate.

5. If you still can’t find one that resembles something that you’ve heard this particular person rambling on about, first give yourself a slight slap on the hand. You should pay better attention. Then point your browser to the nearest Blockbuster or Hollywood Video website. Follow the same procedure outlined in steps 1 – 3 only this time, elect to rent 5 or 6 games that look appealing. This will give your tot a chance to play some games and select one to keep forever while you return the others.

6. If on the other hand, you did find a game in step 3 or 4, you can either check out online, or drive up to the store and buy it there.

They say you can’t judge a book by its cover, but the illustrations on the both video and pc game cases do a pretty good job of representing the game’s content. So if you see an illustration of fighting warriors, chances are the game will be more violent than you prefer. If on the other hand, you see an illustration that resembles what you’d see on the cover of an interesting children’s book, the game should be age appropriate.

Computer role playing games are video games where the player picks a character to be from a list and is sometimes allowed to personalize that entity’s character and clothing before entering the game to interrelate with other people who have also selected to become online fictional characters.

Depending on the game and the character, the entity might be decent or evil and may work with or against other players. Often it is just| like strolling down the road, you do not always know who the person coming towards you truly is and what he or she is like. Could be friendly, could be a terrorist, could be a mugger, could be saintly.

There will be quests and you need to complete these quests to progress through the game. In order to complete some quests, you will need to pick up experience and certain things or powers or find someone to help you, depending on the game and the predicament.

The first widely-played computer role playing game was ‘Dungeons and Dragons’ and most contemporary games follow the game play set down there. The contemporary games, or most of them, are more difficult than D&D, but then they have had something to copy and improve on.

The character that you take on and develop is known as an ‘avatar’ and normally, when you have chosen an avatar, you cannot change it without restarting the game. Do not forget that your avatar will transform subtly as the game advances by learning and acquiring experience and tools or weapons.

Therefore, do not get tempted to swap your avatar if it appears a bit wimpy in the beginning. Children are not the adults that they will be, even if the kernel is already there. Your abilities will be shown on screen somehow, so you will be able to see your strength, experience, magical prowess and what-not progress or diminish.

The setting for the role playing game (RPG) could be anything, but the most popular are fantasy, space and historical, so you could be in ‘Middle Earth’, on Mars or in ‘Merrie Olde England’ for instance, depending on the RPG.

Most games involve magic, but not all and some RPG’s permit you to re-enact real battles with your own tactics to see whether you would hove won or lost – the Battle of the Little Big Horn, for instance.

During the game, you will be required to complete quests or missions. Completing these quests usually takes some abilities or tools or even other people, so you will have to think about how to do it. This is like a chess game where check or checkmate may be achieved with merely one piece, but more frequently it takes several pieces of certain ranks.

Not all the avatars that you meet will be managed by other players, Some, the non-role players (NRP’s) will be computer-controlled and may be there to help you, normally with knowledge or a gift, or to hinder you by blocking your passage or fighting you. Some of these can become beaten and some cannot, so you could expend lots of time and energy on them, but you will not realise this without experience.

Owen Jones, the writer of this article, writes on numerous subjects, but is at present concerned with Mortal Kombat Controls.

We all love to hear what are the Best Video Games of 2011. Every year this happens. Especially at E3, which happens to be the biggest video game exhibition on our planet. Ineluctably, the video games that both kids and even adults get extremely most frantic about are the ones that will not usually be out and available that particular ca lender year. That was especially on-key this year as more or less, some of the greatest titles on exhibit will not hit retail shelves until the holiday season of 2011 most likely Christmas time. Now, we all know that this is very crucifying for players of all ages, but for shareholders, it can make the case for long-run investments. Below are just a few of the Best Video Games of 2011: 1. Gears of War 3 Publisher: Microsoft The latest chapter in this hit Xbox 360 enfranchisement will be Microsoft’s “flagship game next year” and it is anticipating a large following clearly marked for its path of its previous predecessors. This video game will allow 4 people to play hand in glove, goes with new multi-player modes and advanced new ways to shoot down and eliminate the Locust enemies. 2. Star Wars: The Old Republic Publisher: Electronic Arts (E. A.) While this relentless online world Is not a lock for 2011, EA executives are quietly and “under the radar” channels analysts to search for it then. Huge, massive multi player video games can be money makers “just esquire” with Blizzard Entertainment, which runs “World of Warcraft.” also “A.K.A. …WOW“. EA is trusting that this title, set in the rich Star Wars universe, will demonstrate simply as appealing, likable and attractive to the video game players. 3. Portal 2 Publisher: Valve Software The original and Master published “Portal” took and carried the entire video gaming world by the storm of the century with its story-themed series of puzzles and mysteries. This sequel, which will be much longer and will go much more deeper into the areas, hopes to build on that. It is a rare beast of a game which has a action type vibration which you really never shoot or challenge anyone to a fight. 4. Dead Space 2 Publisher: Electronic Arts The 1st installation of this action/horror series was among the creepiest and scariest video games of 2008. The sequel will rage and ramp that up, with some genuinely “scary as hell” moments “and tempo that keeps you on the edge of your seat. ( Just have a spare set of underwear nearby… Lol! ) 5. Deus Ex: Human Revolution Publisher: Square Enix The “Deus Ex” video games initiated the concept that there was to a higher degree 1 way to accomplish an aim in the gaming world. Absorbed in a conspiracy-rich plot line, this episode is being made by a new team that has high anticipations to live up to. Whether they will deliver the goods is to be decided in the future but the early work on this video game is very prosperous. 6. Rage Publisher: Bethesda Softworks ID Software initiated the 1st person shooter video game and is the company behind the “Doom” and “Quake” enfranchisement’s. This is their 1st new attribute in fourteen years and it is looking really, really good. It brought home “Best of Show” awards from many publications at E3 and was one of the most talked about video game titles amongst the convention-goers.

Sony is one of the foremost manufacturers of gaming consoles and has been for years. It’s games console is known as the PlayStation or the PS to gaming aficionados. There was the PlayStation, now known as the PS1, the PS2 and now the PS3.

The Sony PS2 is a gaming console that can do many things. For example, the PS2 will play all of Sony’s games, any CD and any DVD and it will go on the Internet and take part in multi-player games. There are also forums and chat rooms especially for PS2 users.

There are over 1,800 games in the Sony catalogue and there are more being published all the time. For a monthly, fee you may download or take part in on line games, be they multi-player or single player games. There are games for all moods , kinds of character and ages.

The PS2 has its own built-in modem and LAN plug, so it is a completely self-contained unit. It does not have to be connected to a computer to go online, and you do not have to be on line to play a game, watch a film or listen to your favourite music either over speakers or a headset.

The PS2 is not merely a revamped PS1, it is a entirely different machine, so if you are used to the PS1, you will still benefit from reading the handbook that comes with it. Regrettably, many individuals neglect to read the handbook and so fail to set up their PlayStation in the best manner.

One of the functions that you probably will not discover without reading the manual is how to reset the unit or put it in stand-by mode. This is a lot more preferable to only pulling the plug out or leaving it running all the time. There is a recessed button on the front of the unit. If you press it for a second or two, the machine will power down and go into stand-by

If the console crashes or some other fault happens, you will want to reset it. This is done by depressing the same button for longer than is required to enter stand-by. Therefore, the console will go into stand-by and a couple of seconds afterwards will reset, if you keep pressure on the button.. You should not have to do this often, but it is good to know nevertheless.

On the other hand, you should probably use stand-by mode more often than you do, because it is the manufacturer’s recommended manner of putting the machine to rest. The PS2 is basically a dedicated computer and should get treated as such. Leaving it on all the time is the same as leaving your computer on all the dime, but without automatic hibernation after, say, an hour.

If your home is subject to power outages or fluctuations in current, the console or the state of the game could become affected in an unpredictable manner. Putting the PS2 into stand-by mode reduces the chances of this happening.

The most popular game before the Eighties was almost certainly football, but the most common game these days is the video game. All over the world, wherever you go, you will come across individuals of all ages playing and talking about video games. You either love them or you hate them, but there is no denying that video games allow players to exercise their fantasies.

You can become a futuristic warrior fighting demons and trolls one minute, a fighter pilot the next and a top racing driver later on. And the games are as lifelike as simulators that do not cost thousands of dollars can be. However, what is the difference between the various games machines on the market and is using your PC equally as fast?

The most realistic games machines really do cost thousands of dollars, but they are the ones that you see in the Arcades. These are the best simulators on the market and often they include special seats that give bio-feedback.

You could be sitting in a mock-up of a jet as you fly your fighter and the seat will tilt over as you bank your jet to go in for the kill.

However, these machines are out of most individuals’s budget and even playing them has to be a special occasion – simply because of the price per minute. So, most people settle for a cut-down version that they can play free at home when they have the game and the console.

The main contenders in the stakes for the best gaming machines are Microsoft’s Xbox 360, Sony’s PSP and Nintendo’s 3DS. However, if you are expecting a straight solution to which is the best, you will have a long wait and the answers will be very confusing. This is because it is so problematic to compare like with like and everyone has their own likes.

The best approach to take is to first make a decision whether you would like 3D or not. The Nintendo 3D is the best in this case, but are the games that you want to play obtainable for that machine?

Most games may just be played on one or two platforms, so you may buy the machine with the best specifications, but then not be able to play the games you want.

So maybe the best approach is to list all the games you like and sort them into columns of which machines will play them. The one with the most wins. However, what is the most suitable this month, may not be next quarter.

If you want to be able to play games free on line than the PS3 is for you. Its main rival the Xbox charges $60 a month for on line games. Despite that, Microsoft sold 430,000 Xboxes in September alone, making it likely to be the biggest selling games machine of 2011.

This is borne out by a survey that I read concerning the Xbox 360, the PS3, the Nintendo Wii, the PSP Go and the Nintendo 3DS. The Xbox 360 was the only machine to be awarded full marks in every major category (20 stars maximum), followed closely by the PS3 with 19/20, losing one mark for ‘online community’.

You can use your PC for playing games, but it would have to be a very high specification computer to be able to equal these dedicated games consoles.

With plethora of reports suggesting that casual gamers are edging ahead of console gamers, the basic question still remains: Can we seriously consider casual gamers as “Gamers”? Can games like Mafia Wars, Farm Ville, or Angry Birds be compared to powerhouses like Battlefield, COD, Mass Effect, or Max Payne?

To start with, let’s find out what really a casual game is and the difference between casual games and “real” games. A casual game, by definition, is a game that is simple in nature, usually doesn’t have any story/plot and doesn’t require any sort of commitment or special skills to play. Whereas a “hardcore game” is based on a definite methodology, has a concrete plot and requires a fair amount of commitment by gamer. And there in no need to mention the basic skill level required to complete a simplest console based (hardcore) game.

Considering the budget requirement, the graphics and sound quality, and the number of personnel involved in development of a hardcore game, a casual game should never be, in any way, compared with a console based game. However, some so-called market research firms are constantly creating an impression that consoles games are, somewhat, getting obsolete. Take, for example, the recent report by market research firm GfK. The report claims that due to tablets, Gaming Consoles are used less than 59% by gamers. The report was based on the survey which included 3000 participants. The result is not, in any way, surprising because when one considers an office worker, who plays angry birds on his tablet, or a passenger who, while waiting for his train, plays Farmville on his iphone to kill time, as a “genuine gamer”, one will no doubt come up with such kind of reports. Had these experts also included some “real gamers” in their survey, the story would have been much different. Anyway, to cut the story, let’s hope that in future, we do get some reports that are based on “real” statistics.

If you think recession can stop Video Games Market, think again. According to DFC Intelligence (a market research and consulting firm) report, games sales will sharply rise from $66.6 billion to $81 billion in 2016.

DFC Intelligence was published this week as a part of its annual worldwide market forecasts for video games and interactive industry. According to the report, the industry will gain mostly from online sales. Online PC, mobile, and console games will generate an expected revenue of $37.9 billion in 2016 compared to $19.3 billion in 2010. This will post an increase of $18.6 billion. However, retail business will see a relative decline. According to the report, retail business will slide down to $43 billion in 2016 from $58 billion in 2008, a decrease of $15 billion. Overall, as mentioned earlier, the industry will see a rise of about 21.6 percent.

DFC also predicts that online sales will exceed retail business in 2013. Here is what David Cole, DFC Intelligence analyst, said in his remarks

Overall the game industry is becoming more diversified and global as it continues to grow. This makes the industry challenging because it is hard to know where to place one’s bets. At the same time, there are many niches of opportunity that didn’t exist in the past. On a global basis it looks like retail delivery of physical software peaked in 2008. We expect a slow, steady decline for physical game sales, with a steady increase for online delivery of games and new business models such as subscriptions and virtual item sales.
