Dementia is a progressive disease. It cannot be cured, so once an individual has it, they will gradually lose more and more of their faculties throughout the rest of their lives. Although the stages of the disease can vary from person to person, there are three basic stages all patients pass through. During this time, they will experience severe memory loss, a decrease in their mental abilities, increasing difficulty in reasoning and speaking, and possibly even the ability to care for themselves. As hard as the condition is on patients, it can also be quite debilitating for those caring for them, and it helps to understand what you can expect.

You may not notice when a person starts suffering from dementia, because the symptoms are so similar to those you expect as a person ages. Most patients are diagnosed after the age of 65 and will start out having mild memory lapses and bouts with forgetfulness. In the early stage, which may take months or even years to play out, comes such non-alarming symptoms as absentmindedness, apathy, loss of interest in normal pursuits, personality change, mood swings, and irritability. These changes come on gradually, and you may not be able to tell that the person is suffering from dementia until they reach the second stage of the disease.

The second stage is known as moderate dementia. By this point in the progression, you will be able to identify the symptoms for what they are. Individuals in this stage exhibit a decline in their cognitive abiities, the inability to know where they are and the time, short-term memory, difficulty identifying even close family members, and may struggle to perform personal activities, like eating, taking care of their personal hygiene, or bathing themselves. You can expect that the person will be increasingly anxious, frustrated, and irritated. You may also begin to see evidence of auditory or visual hallucinations.

The advanced stage of dementia is when all the severe symptoms show up. Advanced stage dementia patients require constant care due to the serious nature of their symptoms. By this point they will have significant memory loss, be unable to identify anyone as well as possessions they use on a daily basis, and maybe even be unable to walk without assistance. You will find them to be restless, not capable of taking care of their personal needs, unable to sleep, and incontinent. Due to the amount of supervision and help that a person with this degree of dementia will need, this is the point where many loved ones place them in a nursing facility that specializes in dealing with dementia patients.

Dementia isn't pleasant in any of it's stages, but it's becoming a reality for more and more Americans and their loved ones all the time. Even though every patient may not show the symptoms in exactly the same way, all of them will become progressively debilitated until such a time when medical science can uncover a way to more effectively treat the disease.

There's never been a whole lot that medical science could do for Alzheimer's patients. Certain medications might give these folks a brief respite in the progression of the disease, but over time they all knew that they would continue to to deteriorate to the point of total incapacitation. Naturally, no one wants to see this happening to themselves, and everyone who is stricken is looking for that one innovation in treatment that will help them delay the disease the most. While there isn't yet a cure for this type of dementia, a new gadget is offering hope of slowing the progression even more.

Scientists and medical personnel at Johns Hopkins have been experiencing some success by testing the effects of implanting a device similar to a pacemaker in the brain of patients who are actively suffering from the disease which increases brain glucose levels. It has been known for some time that increases in glucose metabolism do lead to brain function improvements. Therefore, patients who have the highest increases in glucose levels do the best at stopping the progression for longer periods of time. Electrodes in the new device stimulate areas of the brain which increases glucose levels. One of the things that Alzheimer's does to the brain is cause a decrease in brain glucose thus inducing the symptoms we all associate with the disease.

Approximately 5.1 million people in the United States are suffering from some level of Alzheimer's, and the numbers continue to rise. Studies into the effects of the pacemaker-like device are promising, and scientists are cautiously optimistic that the new technology will make a real difference in the lives of dementia patients in the future. At the present time, many different research studies are being conducted in an attempt to prevent the advanced symptoms of Alzheimer's. Four new drugs to slow the progression have been approved by the FDA.

The device is still a long way from conclusive testing and FDA approval, but at least there is some hope on the horizon from those who have been viewing Alzheimer's as a tunnel closing in on them. This gadget, when approved, should give patients more options and control of their own lives and help them live more quality years.

It's a scary thought to think about Alzheimer's taking control of your life for you and wondering how or where you're going to get the care you'll need when the time comes. Thank goodness for modern technology and the dedicated researchers who continue to forge into the unknown in order to help those in need.

A lot of people make the mistake of thinking that if someone has Alzheimer's they are no longer able to enjoy the activities they once liked to do. They have the impression that these folks are merely vegetables who are content to sit and while away the hours staring into space. This is definitely not a true picture of a typical Alzheimer's patient. While the person may eventually become unable to participate in even the simplest of pastimes, in the early stages of the disease their minds are active and will stay that way longer provided they have opportunities for stimulus.

No one likes to feel that there is nothing exciting left in life or believe that there's isn't anything more they can achieve in life. Like everyone else, the dementia patient still has a healthy body which likes a bit of action now and then. They also like to feel that they are contributing to their upkeep by being helpful and doing small tasks. Tailoring the jobs that they are allowed to do must be done to keep them safe. For example, a person who has enjoyed cooking their entire life may not be up to working around hot stoves and ovens, but they might still be able to wash and prepare vegetables and other cold foods. If it's something they enjoy, make a real effort to find ways for them to do so.

Dancing and music can be another enjoyable therapy for Alzheimer's patients. In the solitude of their room, you can put on soft music to soothe and comfort them. If they like to dance, make the music a bit livelier, and hit the dance floor with them.

Spending time with a favorite pet can stimulate them mentally as well as physically. Sedentary patients can be encouraged to take walks in the company of their dogs. Unfortunately, not every nursing facility can allow pets. If this is the case, make sure your loved one has opportunities to spend time with an animal in your care, or take them out to a zoo where they can see a variety of animals. Be careful to limit the animals they see to those who won't frighten them.

Games involving memory which they once played as children can be a delight. If necessary, keep the games very simple. Even games like Candyland, Chutes and Ladders, or Crazy Eight can keep them entertained and thinking. You can also try simple activities, such as batting a balloon around the room, which can be a lot of fun.

Just because a person has Alzheimer's doesn't mean they want to spend their remaining years sitting docilely and doing nothing. Keeping their minds and bodies occupied can be wonderful therapy that can also extend their years of lucidity.

Everyone changes as they grow older. Their bodies don't work as well as they did in their younger days, they find wrinkles on their faces and gray in their hair, and they may suffer from a little memory loss. None of this is anything to worry about, because it's just the normal progression of life. However, in some cases, the person may be suffering from the onset of some type of dementia. Dementia starts with memory loss and progresses through stages that rob the patient of the ability to do daily tasks, and cause mobility issues and general disorientation. You may have a loved one who isn't remembering like they used to do and wonder if it could be the onset of dementia. What symptoms should you look for in order to tell the difference between normal aging and this more serious condition?

Both sexes fall victim to dementia, although the women diagnosed do outnumber the men. Still, everyone has the same basic symptoms which include:

* Short-term memory loss can become annoying and frustrating as the person is no longer able to remember what they did just a few hours previously. Details about events in their lives, such as what they ate for lunch, may begin to elude them in the very earliest stages of the disease.

* Misplacing belongings is another common symptom of early-onset dementia. Does your loved on lose their glasses or their keys often?

* Confusion is a major factor when a person is suffering from dementia. They no longer understand what they should do in a given situation or understand even why they would want to do it.

* Disorientation as far as place and time are concerned may become evident. They may ask, “How did I get here?” when they've actually been in that place for a long period of time.

* Dementia patients lose the ability to make reasonable decisions about things they are doing. For example, they may begin wearing mismatched clothing after a lifetime of being very conscious of their looks.

* Doing the same things over and over may be a sign of dementia. For instance, they might start preparing themselves breakfast just minutes after eating breakfast.

* They may start struggling to express their thoughts, even if they had been very verbal before.

As you can see, symptoms of the early stages of dementia are easy to miss, because most of them happen occasionally to everyone, and aging can cause the same behaviors. However, if you specifically watch for all of these symptoms in your loved one, you may begin to see a pattern emerging.

One of the key elements in the treatment of Alzheimer's patients is keeping their minds active in order to slow down the normal progression of the disease. Although it is incurable, these people can still enjoy many different types of activities. If you are a caregiver or have a loved one who suffers from Alzheimer's, you not only need to look after the patient's physical needs and safety, but you also need to provide them with stimulating material to keep their minds engaged. Some great activities for Alzheimer's patients are listed in this article.

Word puzzles are a wonderful way to keep a mind active. No matter whether the patient prefers crossword puzzles, Sudoku, or word searches, there are hundreds of them available. You will even be able to find some that have to do with subjects that interests the person, such as fishing, golf, or traveling. Word games do not challenge a patient's mobility issues; instead they offer intellectual stimulus. When done on a daily basis, they have been proven to help decrease memory loss and slow the pace of dementia, of which Alzheimer's is the most common type.

Reading is another excellent way to promote an active mind. It doesn't really matter whether you read to them or they read to you. Discussing what's been read will also stimulate thinking and comprehension skills. If the patient is past the point of being able to comprehend only printed material, you can use books with pictures, because the visual stimulation will also help them understand and remember. Pleasurable activities such as these will let the patient get to know you better which will foster recognition later on.

There are tons of craft ideas online that can be used with dementia patients. You can start simple, such as with a collage of pictures of their favorite things, and go on to other types of crafts if they are interested and able. Maintaining craft skills that they have enjoyed previously is a good therapy, too. Such activities as scrapbooking, knitting, card making, and drawing encourage thinking processes. Just don't give them anything that will frustrate them too much and bring on extended fits of anger.

Always remember that while the patient has problems, he or she isn't sick. They should still be allowed to do cleaning, cooking, gardening, or other daily chores as long as they are able. They also aren't vegetables incapable of feeling, and if you don't give them plenty to do, they will experience boredom and depression just like anyone else.

People over the age of 65 are those who are most often are stricken with a brain disorder known as dementia, which, contrary to popular belief, isn't the same thing as Alzheimer's. There is no cure for the disease which is both progressive and degenerative. The condition can rob a person of brain functions, such as memory, cognitive functions, reasoning, and language. At more advanced stages, it can take away the individual's ability to take care of themselves or participate in everyday activities which they formerly enjoyed doing. Advanced dementia means that the person is going to need round-the-clock supervision and assistance.

Most people who develop dementia start out by showing a lot of forgetfulness. Since this is a normal part of the aging process, people tend to ignore it in the initial stages. It's only when the condition worsens that people begin to notice. Many cases of dementia have been analyzed, and it has been determined that there are three definitive stages that are pretty much a pattern in every dementia case. Although not every patient will show every symptom, the disease progresses in all patients in a similar way.

The three distinct stages of dementia are:

1. Early stage – Symptoms of this stage include forgetfulness, apathy, absentmindedness, loss of interest in taking initiative in activities, confusion, disorientation, memory loss, personality changes, diminished judgment, sudden mood swings, and irritability. Since these same symptoms can be part of other diseases as well as aging, it's often difficult to diagnose dementia until it progresses to at least the moderate stage.

2. Moderate stage – During this stage symptoms become easier to identify in order to positively diagnose the condition. Patients show a decline in cognitive abilities, the inability to recall even recent events, failure to identify family members, confusion about where they are and the time period they are in, inability to do simple tasks for themselves, such as eating, bathing, or grooming, a higher level of irritability, anxiety, frustration, agitation, and may experience visual or auditory hallucinations.

3. Advanced stage – At this point in the progression, patients need continuous care. They no longer speak or communicate in any way. They show no response to people around them and can no longer recognize family members or everyday objects. Some of the severe symptoms that develop include random movements, incontinence, mobility issues, insomnia, significant memory loss, and the inability to perform simple daily tasks for themselves. In the advanced stage, the patient requires nursing home or assisted living care.

In a few cases, dementia may be reversible if caught and treated early. For most patients, though, treatment consists of presenting the patient with activities to help the mind stay sharp, feeding them a nutritious diet, and making them as comfortable as possible.

It is often the reason that thousands of people show up in emergency rooms every year with them, only to find out these symptoms are related to acid reflux even though these general symptoms may sound like a heart attack.

There are as many as 20 – 30 million Americans suffer from acid reflux or as it’s becoming known – gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD, and this has been estimated by medical professionals.

There are a lot of us who have experienced it especially after that spicy Italian sausage and pepper sub or even that piece of dense chocolate torte. Some experience it while they are drinking iced tea. This means that it is easy to know what foods to avoid so we don’t have a problem if we are like those people with food related acid reflux. If we take an over the counter antacid, then we can obtain relief.

However, for some of us, acid reflux becomes a chronic condition that over time can cause damage to the esophagus. When the damage to the esophagus occurs this is when acid reflux can cause serious medical problems.

The stomach acids that back flow from up into the esophagus actually damage the lining of the esophagus and this is what happens with chronic acid reflux. With this back up of acid, ulcers can be formed along the esophagus and can cause what is called Barrett’s esophagus which is when the normal esophageal cells are replaced with abnormal cells. These abnormal cells have in fact been associated with cancer of the esophagus.

The question is what to do? First, you can try the easiest path. If you have occasional acid reflux you can try observing what foods bring on the acid reflux. For some medical professionals, they do not see any link between acid reflux and food at all. What they do believe is that acid reflux occurs no matter what type of food you eat. This has not been my personal experience. I have found that avoiding combinations of foods does prevent my acid reflux from occurring.

Try keeping a diary of what you have eaten when your acid reflux acts up. By doing this, you will know what types of food you should avoid. Another suggestion is that you do not lie down right after any meal. You should also avoid bending over right after a meal.

Avoid wearing any tight fitting clothing. Do not smoke! Smoking can trigger acid reflux symptoms. If periodic acid reflux is what you tend to have then you can seek relief from over the counter antacids. For more severe and chronic acid reflux it is suggested that you seek advice from your medical professional. A prescription antacid is what you may need for relief. <ins><ins></ins></ins>

Developmental Disability commonly refers to a severe and chronic disability that is often attributable to a mental or physical impairment that occurs prior to age 22. A developmental disability can be expected to continue indefinitely and often present significant challenges to children and families. There are five diagnostic categories associated with the term developmental disability. They are Mental Retardation, Cerebral Palsy, Epilepsy, Autism and Neurological Impairments.

A developmental disability can result in functional limitations in some of the following areas. Self-care, learning, language and communication, mobility and movement, socialization, independence, self-determination.

Although developmental disabilities generally fall into these categories, there are many different conditions and diagnosis that are defined as developmental disabilities, including spinal bifida, muscular dystrophy, deafness, visual impairments, brain and spinal injuries, and others.

It is noteworthy to state here that we can help our children with disabilities to communicate and move if we encourage them to take part in daily activities. Dressing and bathing can be opportunities to encourage your child’s development. Children learn a lot in the first three years. So it is a good idea to start as early as possible.

Why do people use Apple Cider vinegar…

** Diabetes
Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of Apple Cider vinegar health benefits is its effect on blood glucose levels. Several small studies suggest that the vinegar (Apple Cider vinegar and other types) may help reduce blood glucose levels.

For example, a preliminary study by researchers at the State University of Arizona, published in the journal Diabetes Care, considered people with type 2 diabetes. The study participants took either two
tablespoons water or vinegar for Apple Cider with an ounce of cheese before sleeping for two days. The researchers found taking two tablespoons of vinegar before going to sleep had a favourable impact on blood glucose levels the next morning. Before the study, the average level of blood glucose fasting was 137 mg/dL. Decreased 2% cheese and 4% with vinegar, a statistically significant difference. In people with a level of glucose fasting over 130 mg/dL before the study, the vinegar reduces the levels of glucose in 6%. The study was very small and the duration was short, so more research is needed.

Other studies have found that Apple Cider vinegar can reduce the increased post-meal of glucose. The acetic acid in vinegar is thought to slow starch digestion and reduce the Glycemic food index starch. For
for example, a small study compared the effect of vinegar with white bread in the levels of glucose and insulin in blood. The researchers found that those who took vinegar with white bread had low glucose in the blood insulin levels and post-meal and also appeared to increase satiety ratings.

** Weight loss
Apple Cider vinegar has become popular as a “fat burner” and as a natural appetite suppressant. In fact, there is even a diet of vinegar apple cider, which consists of taking one to three teaspoons of vinegar pills before each meal apple cider vinegar or apple cider. The first promoter of Apple Cider vinegar to lose weight was Jarvis, who wrote that people who regularly consume apple cider vinegar would be burning fat instead of storing it. Although some say that the pectin, enzymes, vitamins or potassium can help with weight loss, there is no reliable research showing that Apple Cider vinegar or the combination of seaweed, vinegar of cider Apple and lecithin, vitamin B6 can influence metabolic rate or help us “burn fat” faster than what you would normally.

A small study in 2005 found that those who ate a piece of bread with a small amount of white vinegar felt more full and satisfied than those who ate only bread. It is possible that vinegar can affect satiety, declining food carbohydrates glycemic index in a meal. More research is needed.

** Alkaline acid balance
Some alternative practitioners suggest vinegar of cider Apple as a part of a diet to restore the acid alkaline balance. The theory behind the alkaline diet is that our blood is slightly alkaline, with a normal
level of pH between 7.35 and 7.45. Our diet should reflect this level of pH and is slightly alkaline. All the food we eat, after being digested and metabolized, launch a base acid or alkaline

(bicarbonate) in blood. The food that people tend to cause: grains, meat, dairy products – all produce acid.
The acid alkaline theory advocates believe that a diet high in acid producing food leads to a lack of energy, excessive mucus production, infections, anxiety, irritability, headache, pain nasal congestion and sinus, throat, allergic reactions and makes people prone to conditions such as arthritis and gout. Despite being an acid solution, some Apple Cider vinegar advocates believe it has an alkalizing effect on the body, reason by which one to two tablespoons of water apple cider vinegar is recommended as a daily tonic for health. Although it is a popular remedy, still not been investigated the effectiveness of repair and theory.

** Dandruff
A home remedy for dandruff is to mix 1/4 cup vinegar of cider Apple with 1/4 cup of water. The vinegar solution is designed to restore the restoration of the balance of pH of the scalp and discourage the
overgrowth of malassezia furfur, the fungus of yeast – believed that they trigger dandruff.
The mixture of vinegar is usually poured into a bottle of spray and spritzed the hair and scalp, while avoiding the area of eyes and ears. A towel is then wrapped around the head and left in 15 minutes to an hour. After that, the vinegar in the hair can be washed. Alternative professionals often recommend once to twice per week for dandruff.

** Cholesterol
A 2006 study found that rats fed of acetic acid (the main ingredient in vinegar) significantly reduce total cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Large, human trials are needed to see if the
same results occur in humans.

** Acid reflux
Water apple cider vinegar is a popular home remedy for acid reflux. It has been based on a theory by some practitioners of alternative medicine heartburn and reflux are actually symptoms of
insufficient stomach caused by aging, acid diet poor or overusing antacids or other medications. Alternative professionals often rely on laboratories to perform alternative tests to assess heartburn before any treatment. Critics say that the insufficient stomach or achlorhydria, acid is not a common condition and is not a known cause of acid reflux or heartburn.

Apple Cider vinegar is not recommended as a home for the acid reflux or heartburn remedy, because it can damage the delicate lining of the digestive tract and possibly it could worsen the problem. If you have acid reflux or heartburn, consult a health professional qualified for appropriate diagnosis and treatment.

** Acne
Apple Cider vinegar is a home remedy for acne. A typical application is one part apple vinegar with three parts of water and the solution was applied in the Shin. While some people swear by it, use caution because there have been reports of cases of skin damage and burns to use full strength vinegar on the side.

** The blood pressure
Preliminary studies suggest that the acetic acid in Apple Cider vinegar can help lower blood pressure. How it could work is unclear, although some studies suggest that it can increase levels of nitric oxide, a compound that relaxes blood vessels, or body may inhibit an enzyme called angiotensin converting enzyme producing Angiotensin II, a hormone which causes blood vessels to constrict or reduce.?
