Many people have a backyard pond, there is no doubt of that, but maintaining it in the best condition takes a little work. The most labour-saving item as far as a garden pond is oncerned is the water pump and its filter, because the pump drives the water through the filters, washing it, giving your fish a decent environment in which to live.
Without a pump, you would have to have a brook running through your pond or you would have to do water changes quite frequently. Solar pond pumps take it to the next level.
So the pond’s submersible water pump is actually both a labour-saving device and a way of permitting ordinary people to have a beautiful pond of fish in their backyard. Anybody who knows anything about fish knows that they need a uncontaminated environment in order to flourish, something that a lot of us are only recently beginning to realise |about us.
Scientists say that humans came out of the water even before we were rats, but there is no doubting the fact that most people like to hear the sound of trickling water (as long as it is not through the roof), so, a pond becomes a desire for a lot of people. Fish are also fairly easy to maintain and can be cheap enough to buy.
So, what do you really, truly need to keep your fish in the pink? Well, clean water, and in the absence of a stream, you have to simulate one with a pond pump and a filter. These are driven by electricity, for which you need wiring laid in – and electricity involves a monthly bill, doesn’t it?
The truth is no, it does not have to. You could get a solar powered pump. There is practically no wiring involved, no electrician’s fees and no charges from the grid. The sole exception is if you want to have a solar powered battery back up to use at night.
Solar pond pump prices are greater, because they come with a solar panel to power them, but otherwise they are merely electric pumps that work for free. However, solar pond pumps are much less expensive than they were.
Solar pond pumps are no different to standard pond pumps except that they are dearer up-front and then free to run for the life of the pump but you will save the cost of laying armoured cable from your home to your pond.
If saving your own money is not a good enough incentive, solar pond pumps also save us burning fossil fuels and allow us to do our bit. This aspect of being self-sufficient ought to not be underestimated. It is a great feeling to know that your pond is not going to cost you or the planet a lot more..
If you are worried about the amount of light where you live, be reassured that solar panels are much more efficient than they were even a couple of years ago and they can maintain a rechargeable battery backup. It is no longer true that a solar powered system runs just in daylight.
You know already how quickly the world changes these days, so choosing the right solar will save you money within a year and it will power your pond’s fountains and waterfalls for years longer.
You also know that the price of electricity only goes up in even the short term. People still think that solar panel systems cannot run at night, but with a rechargeable battery back up that is not true – imerely depends on where you live and what you would like.
A solar pump will power a filtration system to keep your pond water pure and a couple of water features like a fountain, a filtration system, a pond heater and even solar pond lights. If you have not looked into solar pond pump filters for a few years, you will be pleasantly surprised.

Having a pond in your backyard can be a challenge even to the most avid of landscapers. It's all about a delicately-balanced ecosystem which will maintain water quality as well as animal and plant life. There are three major contributors to the well-being of your pond environment which are light and temperature, oxygen, and nutrients. Having a better understanding of how these important elements play their parts in maintaining a successful pond is essential for anyone who plans to take on this challenge.

You should never underestimate the critical role the sun will play in the atmosphere of your pond. Before you even start building, you need to do some research regarding the pond life you want to introduce into the environment so that you can know what is going to work the best: full sunshine or partial shade. Keep in mind that plants will only grow in the top layer of a pond, because photosynthesis doesn't take place any deeper.

The sun is the major source of energy used by the pond. For pools that are deeper than 9', you will find that the sun causes stratification of temperatures which are layers of the water that are either oxygenized or not. This condition requires special handling. In general, the warmer the water, the less oxygen it holds.

The nutrients in any water ecosystem directly correlate to the amount of weeds and algae that grow and multiply in your pond. Phosphorous has been determined to make the biggest contribution to the growth of plants in that only 1 gram of phosphorous can produce as much as 100 grams of algae.

The third essential ingredient in your pond is oxygen. After all, there can't be life of any kind without it. Oxygen is supplied to the water via photosynthesis, wave action, and wind movement. Without it, all animal life in the ecosystem would die, and the pond would begin to smell bad. Causes of oxygen depletion include still, cloudy days, excessive heat and humidity, high nutrient populations, and chemicals.

Helpful bacteria can only live in the water if there is sufficient oxygen present. Although there are types of bacteria that live in oxygen-starved water, they don't process the wastes quickly enough to be of much help. In addition, the bacteria that live without enough oxygen produce hazardous by-products such as ammonia, methane, and hydrogen sulfide.

As with any other type of ecosystem, a pond requires a careful balance of elements if it's going to continue to function.

Ants seem quite innocuous to a lot of people. In most temperate climates, ants do very little damage, although red ants bite people all around the planet.

However, there are more dangerous ants in warmer countries and some of these ants can even be the cause of hospitalizations and even a few fatalities. Red ant bites itch and even hurt, but imagine a baby falling onto a red ant nest.

What if that infant fell onto a fire ant nest or a red carpenter ant nest? Carpenter ants can be an inch (25 mm) long and a bite may draw blood. There are venomous ants in South America and exploding ants in Southeast Asia, although they will not kill humans. Soldier ants are quite frightening as well. In fact, the number of dangerous ants in the warmer countries can get worrying.

Indeed, just two weeks ago, my male dog was covered in big red welts all around his stomach and under carriage. He was clearly in a great deal of pain when he walked and was off his food. It has been quite hot here in Thailand this summer because the monsoon was behind schedule, so he most likely dug a shallow hole in the earth to stay cool.

He was almost certainly attacked by ants while he was napping, but could not shake them off. He was in a very bad way for three days. I felt really sorry for him.

Some ants are vegetarians but others will gladly consume meat, if it is available. Most ants will eat dead insects and small, dead animals. Some will also attack fit animals, including humans, if they feel attacked.

One trouble is that insects can be resistant to chemical controls and occasionally this resistance is localized, so it is better not to use chemicals if you can do anything about it. Chemicals can also present a danger to children, which makes storing them and using them even more risky.

Boric acid is a by-product of boron which is a natural product. Boric acid is very effective at destroying insects that take food back to their colonies, so this includes ants and termites.

It may be blended with sugar and water to make it more appealing to ants or can be spread about the backyard with no danger. It is harmless to children and pets alike.

Cayenne pepper is also a deterrent-cum-killer. Cultivate your own cayenne peppers, liquidize them and add to boiling water, then spray over ants and ant runs once it has chilled. It will not kill a colony, but it will deter foraging ants.

Corn meal is a way of ant and cockroach control. Sprinkle it around and if the insects eat it, it will swell up with their digestive juices and cause them to blow up. Not very nice, but satisfying all the same.

There are other biological remedies for destroying or deterring insects as well. Some are favourites of one country or local people. Why don’t you ask around the older folks where you live and find out what their parents used to use to control ants and other insects the natural way?

There are occasions when it just seems that there are much more insects than ever before. Perhaps it is the warmer winters and wetter summers helping them breed more easily, or maybe it is because fewer people are using insecticides on their gardens.

It is fairly comprehensible that a great deal of people do not want to use chemicals on their gardens, but not using anything at all results in a growth in the insect population.

During the last fifty or more years, people have gotten more and more accustomed to using chemical insecticides to kill household and garden insect pests because they are a quicker and definite killer. So what can you do if you want to manage the quantity of garden insect pests, but do not like to use chemicals?

Well, you would have to go back to using natural insect pest killers, although most households have forgotten what their great-grandparents used to use to eradicate insects.

The following is a list of some of the natural methods of killing insect pests. However, not all methods or plants will be obtainable in all countries.

Stinging nettles: if you cut down a bunch of stinging nettles and steep them in water for a week or more, chemicals will leach out of the nettles into the water. Strain the water off and spray it on your plants. It will kill or discourage most backyard insects. You could also use it as a plant food, but you will have to be careful how concentrated it is.

Rotenone: is a natural insecticidal. It is manufactured from the roots of the derris plant. It kills by attacking the stomachs of insects. However, it is rather slow-acting and has to be reapplied frequently in order to get the maximum effect.

Washing Up Water: soapy water of any kind will kill aphids amongst other garden insect pests. This is a very simple control to dispense. Just strain your soapy water into a spray gun (like an empty window spray gun) and squirt your aphids.

Corn flour: you can sprinkle this at the base of plants or skirting boards to kill insects. If a tomato hornworm or a cockroach eats some, the corn flour will puff up in the insect’s stomach with the bodily fluids in there and the insect will eventually explode.

Pyrethrum: will paralyze an insect, but it will also wear off, so it is frequently mixed with a poison to finish the insect off. Otherwise, you can pick them up.

A mixture of cow’s milk, flour and water can be used as a natural insecticide, funnily enough. It is very good at killing the eggs of insects. It also destroys insects themselves by clogging their breathing holes. In other words, they suffocate. Neem is a very common tree in India and has medicinal properties too as insecticidal applications.

This natural insecticide repels insects by means of an active ingredient that mimics an insect hormone. It makes it hard, if not impossible, to digest food and it stops their cycle of reproduction. It works best of all on insects that primarily eat leaves.

Most people have an inflated hatred of insects. Especially people who live in towns and cities. People who live in the country are a little more tolerant of them. But why are we like that with insects?

Why are we forever squashing them and poisoning them? Ok, we do not like to share our dwellings with them, I think that is fair enough, but I also think that we go too far usually.

As an alternative to just destroying them on sight, it may be better to attempt to stop them gaining access to the home in the first place. Many people appear to assume that all insects are troublesome, but this is just not the case.

Just think how many more flies we would have buzzing around us and landing on our food, if it were not for spiders, but I do not know anyone who really likes spiders. They do not seem to receive a lot of credit for doing a great job. We are on the same team against flies.

But then flies help to quicken the decomposing of dead animals as well. Their maggots consume the decomposing flesh of dead animals, which keeps infection and bad smells down.

Ants do the same for dead insects and cockroaches do it for bits and pieces of food left lying about. I have not discovered a good reason for mosquitoes, fleas or ticks yet though.

One thing is for certain, this congenital or acquired loathing or dread of insects does not do the manufacturers of pesticides any damage financially.

Perhaps it is time to take a step back from our paranoia concerning insects. It is well past time to become more judicious in our killing of insects.

For example, when you spray your gorgeous rose bushes with a chemical insecticide, you want to get rid of greenfly (aphids), but you are also destroying the ants, the ladybirds, the spiders and possibly any bees or butterflies that come to feed and pollinate. Whereas, if you had sprayed the bushes with old, filtered washing up water, you would just have killed the greenfly.

Where would we all be if everyone killed all the pollinators? Cropless? In fact, the scarcity of bees is already a global crisis. Although the reason for their fast declining numbers is not quite clear, it cannot do any good having their immune system or nervous system attacked by the residue of insecticides whenever they take a drink of nectar.

Similarly with butterflies. Gardeners do not like caterpillars, but everybody like butterflies and where would we be without them? In a far duller place, I am sure.

Some species of wasps kill thousands of caterpillars. so, it is preferable to encourage them rather than kill the caterpillars yourself with a nuclear bomb of a chemical spray.

Some useful natural ways of controlling insects are the use of washes containing Neem, Tobacco or Pyrethrum. These natural treatments discourage them in small doses but will kill if used in a strong mixture.

Look out for products that contain them and follow the instructions judiciously to see if they suit your requirements. Borax will help control insect pests that eat their way around your household and so will corn flour.

There are many ways that people can be more discriminating whilst attacking insects. The main issue is that it is a lot easier to go buy a spray, but if you do some research, you will find loads of methods of eradicating insects with natural pesticides.

Growing robust and healthy plants is a very rewarding hobby and a way of making some money. However, it means protecting your plants from garden insects like aphids, mealy bugs, ants, black fly, red spider mite and the like.

These pests have to be controlled on a frequent and persistent basis. Most of them are fairly frail in nature and may be killed by touch alone.

Because they breathe through holes in their skin, water can become both a giver and taker of life for them. Steps can easily be taken, say, adding oil, tobacco or even merely washing-up liquid to block their pores and prevent air getting in.

So, identification of the species and information of the life-cycles of these backyard insects becomes essential from the point of view of finding organic, natural ways of eradicating them. It is significant to note that some can be controlled effectively while others cannot.

For instance, moths that easily fly away cannot be effectively tackled, whereas in their state as a caterpillar or chrysalis they may be killed.

Again we might find it a problem to fully control chafer grubs that feed and hibernate under the soil, while cockchafers or rose chafer can be easily destroyed at sunset and dawn and then shaken out of rose bushes the next day.

The importance of information increases further during bad weather conditions, when we not just have to deal with additional backyard insects like flies and maggots, but also have to take care to make sure that the plants get enough water and nutrition.

One of the simplest, but most effective ways to save backyard plants from chemicals and control harmful backyard insects, is the use of organic pesticides on a frequent basis, say, once a week or fortnight.

Substitute the use of pesticide sprays with your second-hand household washing-up water. This will help kill both the insects and their eggs as well.

Pesticides may be the best solution for the control of harmful backyard insects, but it is best to be careful to avoid excessive chemicals and begin the eradication of harmful garden insects on a gradual basis.

It is best to start on one plant at a time and then observe how the plant reacts to the organic pesticide preparation.

A 24-hour observation interval will give an idea whether a weaker preparation needs to be used to prevent further loss or injure. Post pesticide control is vital, so observe the results of your insecticide and if it has not worked, burn the plant or start again with a stronger mixture.

You might be surprised to know that feeding harmful garden insects is more economical because feeding them helps to arrest their breeding cycle in the same or future season. This is particularly true of Turnip fly and snails.

Some growers of dahlias and other flowers plant lettuce along side these flowering plants. Slugs and snails prefer lettuce to other foodstuffs and so eat them first.. Furthermore, lettuce serves as a trap for snails and slugs so that they might be easily caught and destroyed

Battery Voltage

One of the most important elements of a cordless drill is battery voltage. As expected, the higher the voltage, the greater the power, or in that matter, torque (we talk about torque later). But keep this in mind, it does have a downside. By having more power, generally it does have heavier battery and therefore the heavier the cordless drill will be. Think about whether it will be used for long periods. If so, lightweight cordless drill will minimize fatigue and won’t put undue pressure on wrist.

Battery Types and Charger

While many conventional and older model of cordless drills comes with Nickel-Cadmium (NiCad) batteries, newer, greener alternatives are Nickel-Metal-Hydride (NiMH) and Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion batteries), and these types of batteries offer increased power and longer run time while weighing less than older NiCad batteries. NiCad battery contains toxic material called Cadmium, which over time can find its way into groundwater if the NiCad battery is thrown in the trash and not recycled properly.

Torque

Torque is the measurement of twisting force the drill applies when in use. It is how powerful the drill is. Typically, the higher the battery voltage, the higher the drill’s torque, but you will notice that torque does vary between different models featuring the same battery voltage. Torque is often affected by the physical makeup of the drill’s motor, so referring to manufacturer’s data usually a better representation of how powerful a drill can be.

Chuck Size

Cordless drills typically available in one of two different-sized chucks, 3/8-inch or 1/2-inch. These measurements refer to the largest drill bit shank the chuck can accept.

Any Special Features On This Model?

the convenience of a Dual Speed Ranges of 0-500/0-1,700 RPM for optimal versatility. Use lower speed for driving screws while higher speed for drilling holes. Imagine using high speed drill for screw, the screw can easily get stripped out.

The next feature is Clutch Settings. What is clutch setting? Most cordless drills have a clutch setting to limit the torque for different projects. Located immediately behind the chuck, the clutch will disengage the drive shaft of the drill and make a clicking sound when a preset level of resistance is reached. This will prevent not stripping screws and at the same time protects the drill’s motor.

Additional nice feature is LED Worklight which provides increased visibility in confined spaces.

Its compact size also makes it easy to drill in tight spaces like under sinks, and in corners, or a closet and makes drilling overhead or in tight spaces a cinch.

How to Make Floating Candles

There is one instance where wax and water do mix — Floating Candles!

Floating candles are simply small candles with a wider top than base that enables the candle to stay up right and float.

You’re no doubt aware that all candles will float because wax itself floats, it’s just the shape of the candle that achieves the perfect floating situation.

While making floating candles is relatively easy, making the perfect floater can take a little work and trial and error. The fundamental instructions for floating candles are the same as with votive candles, but with floaters you will need a small mold that is larger at the top than it is at the bottom.

Many candle supply companies sell ‘tart’ or ‘floater’ molds.

For more details on floating candles bulk

Equipment Tips for Floating Candles

Definitely use a primed wick with your floating candle.

If your wick gets wet your candle won’t burn.

A well primed wick will also help protect your candles burning capabilities in case it gets splashed.

Once you’ve made your floating candles you’ll want to make sure you have prepared some great places to leave them floating.

You could drop a floating candle into a goblet or wine glass. A margarita glass is great for three small candles.

Or perhaps try filling a votive holder with water and make a lovely floating votive!

And of course, don’t forget to fill a large bowl with water and float several candles in it to make a warm, beautiful centerpiece for your next dinner party.

Troubleshooting Tips for Floating Candles

Your candle’s not burning as big and bright as you’d like?

When your candle isn’t burning as big and bright as you might like then you may have a number of problems to deal with. Let’s take a quick look at a few:

It could be that your wick is too small, too short or too loose. Try a different wick size and see if this makes the difference you’re looking for.

It could also be that coloring agents may have clogged your wick. With all candle making, be careful not to get anything on your wick next time you make a candle.

A problem that is quite common, especially when people forget to monitor their thermometers, is that your wax’s melting point was too high. The best thing here is to try a lower melt point wax next time.

And finally, it is possible that you used too much stearin or other additives. The rather simple solution to try here is to use less next time.

If Floating Candles sound like the type of candle you would like to be making then please refer to my eBook, How to Make Candles.
