The need to stand the pressure of life cannot be overemphasized whether one likes it or not since it is one of the ingredients that add inevitable values and standards to one’s vital existence. This is a phenomenon from which one can never escape since it is bound to come at any point in time.

At one stage of life or another during one’s terrestrial journey from the cradle to the grave everyone of us must come under one inevitable pressure and that is what makes one the real person to face the vicissitudes of  normal existence. Whichever way one may look at it, there are so many kinds of pressure: financial, physical, marital, societal, environmental, family, personal to mention just a few.

It stands to reason that one is so much pressed for time when there is so much to do but the time is hardly not there. In many cases at work you have so much under your sleeves but the available time will not just allow you to perform the way you would want. In situation like this, all we have to do is to deploy our sixth sense to the best of our ability and make haste slowly if we do not want to suffer from unnecessary inertia.

It stands to reason that if pressures are not carefully and properly handled the resultant effect is always depression or stress which can eventually affect our health in a bad way and eventually induces all kinds of sickness and death in some of the cases. That is why the necessity to watch our physical and mental energy exertion is quite inevitable if we do not want to add more to the societal problems we think we can solve in our own little way.

Is there a way we can fathom out why pressures come to be part of us as long as we are living in this great terrestrial divide? Yes, the phenomenon is a natural consequence of human and social development. Just imagine the type of pressure you will be going through if you are moving from one environment to another and the same thing can be said of a student who is preparing from an examination because of the anxiety to pass in a flying color in order to win the much coveted prize of success.

As a young school leaver seeking admission into an institution of higher learning normally comes under pressure also is an adult that wants to make ends meet for the survival of his family of which he is the bread winner. In an informal chat with “ Daily Sketch” (a defunct Nigerian newspaper) on May 17, 1983 that was four years before his transition to the world beyond, Papa Obafemi Awolowo – the foremost Nigerian politician and a second-to-none statesman of Nigeria stated that “any society that attempts to stifle intellectual opinion merely does so at its own peril”, because as he rightly observed, by nature of division of labor in the society, universities are certainly the ears and eyes of the nation it is therefore the duty of any government committed to democratic principles and ideals to ensure that its universities function in an atmosphere of unfettered academic freedom. All he was saying then was that the need for students to secure university scholarship should not be a Herculean task.

When asked about what he would like to be remembered for he said: “I would like to be remembered for helping to build a strong and united multi-ethnic state. I want to be remembered for creating the basis for an irreversible revolution in education, in provision of social amenities and in the fight for social justice in Nigeria. I have not yet succeeded in all these but I have set a pattern which no other Nigerian can ignore or reverse. What an incontestable altruism because before he ever came into Nigeria’s political scene and after his demise on May 9, 1987 no other living or dead Nigerian has been able to get near the record of papa’s achievements let alone break them.

It was his administration, even when the country was still under the colonial rule, that would be the first to provide free education at all levels, free health scheme, the first modern day stadium in Nigeria, the first television network in the country and industries to cater for the need of his people, fundamental rights and general welfare. By the time he took over the reign of government, he raised the number of scholarship for the indigenes of the region from five to 200 and even ensured that loans given to students  for tuition and upkeep were written off and it is quite a pity  that all papa’s legacies are now in the drains since his successors only paid lip service to the painstaking efforts.

It is quite a shame today that owing to lackadaisical attitudes of the powers that be, our education industry is in total shambles, the gates of  nearly all our universities are always shut because of the ceaseless rifts between the government and the academic union. Today the standard of education, in the country, has fallen so low to an extent that it is nothing to write home in the world university index, this is because our policy makers in the education industry care less about the future of the grassroots populace because their own children are abroad pursuing qualitative education at the nation’s expense.

Our focus is always on how our young ones can have easy access to grants and scholarships that will enable them pursue and catch the proverbial Golden Fleece abroad. The reason why armed robbers with sophisticated weaponry that is no match for the police and other security agencies can now operate with impunity even in day time cannot therefore be farfetched. It is quite unfortunate that the targets of these vicious elements that are the true enemies of the society are young men and women in their prime ages that are gradually driven to high-tech crimes by frustration which the nation itself willy-nilly unleashed on them.

The importance of education of the youths in any country cannot be underestimated that is the reason why the government of the old western region of Nigeria, in 1955 made it free and compulsorily so the reason why that geographical entity in the nation remains the pacesetter in terms of socio-economic development in this part of the world if not in the whole of Africa today.

Had the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo administration not introduced free and compulsory education for the children of that region at the time he did, yours sincerely would have, perhaps been a roadside mechanic or engaged in any other obscure trade to eke out a substandard living. Glory be to God, he holds a doctorate degree and is opportune to be a factor to reckon with in the international socio-political arena.

This is the reason why it pains one to the bone marrow each time universities campuses are shut because of strike whenever there is disagreement between the Academic Staff Union and the government the consequence of which normally send students home more than a session in some cases. The authorities are quite nonchalant because their own children and wards are abroad where they receive quality education at tax payers’ money.

The best thing for you to be a successful person no matter what your station in life may be as at this very moment is to have a sober reflection on your divine endowment and invest it to the best of your ability since it is quite enough to sustain you all your life.  There are many people out there who always hold on to a very strong erroneous belief that it is only when they must wait to have all that is necessary for a good living pursuit before they can make an impact in both their immediate and remote environment. Sure they will have to wait till the eternity.

Having enough to meet all our needs only requires management and planning, this means that in whatever industry you are engaged in either in the private or public sector of the economy, you cannot do without adequate and sound  guiding principles that you must follow to the letter. The major problem with some people is that they have never cultivated the habit of going to the drawing board and work on both the merit and demerit of their projects at hand and not being mindful of the fact that they are the architects of their fortunes and misfortunes.

To buttress the fact that you have enough to meet all your needs, there is a friend of mine who at the beginning of 1992 only had just an equivalent of US$80 having been laid off from a company where he hard worked as sales manager for more than 15 years.  That was in the previous month of December 1991. Since he realized that getting another employment could not be a child’s play and he did not want to join the labor market where the issue of survival is as hard a rock, he just summoned courage  and plunged himself into buying and selling of books.

After paying about $50 for a year rent for the shop he hired, all he had left was just less than $30 with which he purchased few books and before long, buying and selling went on in earnest and in not less than four years, he had a good turning point because of  his sound management and prudent spending.

At a point in time, he ventured into the murky water of Nigerian politics without any prior practical experience or an inevitable godfather while the only person he could hold on to as an aspiration was a glaringly unlettered old ward chairman that lived behind his bookshop. He moved closer to the later who eventually introduced him to the members in the area and starting well with them and taking part in all their activities, he ended up in bagging the major political office as the Deputy Speaker of the House of Assembly. Today, our friend now sits as the head of an international conglomerate with several million US Dollars as assets out of the meager $80 he started business with in January 1992.  The point here is that you should start where you are with what you have no matter how little. It is quite obvious that certain economic and money making gaps are opened in your environment and all you have to do is to fill them up with your God given ingenuity. What are the most inevitable needs of the people in your surroundings just find a way to serve them and before you know it your little meaningless efforts, will become a life sustaining venture.
