Choosing a Massage School

If you are considering a career in massage, one of your first challenges is choosing a massage school that meets your need. The most important thing to remember is that massage schools are marketing to you and trying to get your money.

The competition among massage schools these days has heated up to the point where massage schools will do almost anything to get students enrolled. Doing some research into the massage profession can help you make a more informed decision about your career.

What you can do as a potential student is to come to understand your needs and find a school that will meet them.

What you will need is a school that can match your learning style and teach you massage in a way that you understand.

You also have to take into consideration your budget and time constraints. Will a massage school closer to home serve you better than having to travel an hour away to massage school? Will one that has a lower amount of educational hours and therefore will cost you less, let you be able to come out of massage school with enough money to start a business or hold you over until you find a massage job?

A higher number of hours of education is not always better since as a massage therapist you will be constantly taking new classes. There is also no proof that more education is actually better and there is evidence that less is actually better because of the way people learn. There is more information on this in the White Paper by Keith Grant called “issues in Massage Governance”

In most states there are no requirements to get into massage school except for having a high school diploma and not being a criminal. Most people go to massage school after having a career in business or health care which serves as a foundation for building a practice. A high school graduate would be better served by getting an education and life experience to have a better massage school experience.
