Christmas in Colonial Virginia

Built by Grace Smith on Monday, December 24th, 2001

Christmas in Colonial Virginia, a section of the Colonial Williamsburg site, offers a thoughtful look at how the colonists celebrated Christmas. The site features information on: Christmas Customs, Another Look at Christmas in the Eighteenth Century, Holiday Wassail and Gingerbread, and “A Colonial Christmas in Williamsburg” lesson plan. The lesson plan includes a graphic organizer for comparing Christmas then and now. Students will be able to plan a colonial Christmas event, demonstrate colonial Christmas customs, and participate in a colonial Christmas activity.

Rating: Elegant use of history, comparison/contrast, and writing activities in the context of the Christmas holiday.
