Christmas Magic Tricks And Props

Built by Alex Tsui on Friday, December 2nd, 2005

Christmas is very near and this is one of the most lucrative seasons for magicians. There is plenty of demand for shows but during this special time, you can’t simply slap a bunch of tricks haphazardly together and call it your “Christmas Magic Show”. You’ve got to put more thought and planning into it. Here’s what you can do…

Just like an interior decorating project, everything has got to match with everything else and is related to a common theme. Ideally all magic shows and routines should be created this way. However, it is more so if you are performing a Christmas Magic Show because the audience expects to see tricks that are related to Christmas in some way.

How do you select tricks that are suitable? Fortunately there are a number of tricks that are especially designed for Christmas shows and would look out of place if performed at any other time. Here are a few tricks and props that you can use for your Christmas shows:

  • Christmas Stocking Change Bag

A “change bag” is a standard magic prop to produce, vanish or change one object into another. Usually it looks exactly like a church collection bag (a bag attached to a wooden handle). This one however has been dressed up nicely to look like a Christmas Stocking. It has a handle where the magician can manipulate secretly to control the effects (either a production, vanish or change).

  • Christmas Vanishing Hank

This is another standard utility prop which is normally called a “Devil’s handkerchief”. It can produce, vanish and change objects just like a change bag. However this is normally used for smaller objects and can be used as an alternative to the change bag to give some variety. This handkerchief is themed with Christmas accents like Santa Claus and Christmas trees.

  • Peppermint Stick Nesting Wands

This is a popular kid’s trick which is usually done with magic wands. Here it’s done with peppermint sticks. The magician starts by handing a kid a peppermint stick but then it multiplies into two. They keep multiplying until the kid is left holding five sticks (in his hands, under his chin, under his arms and between his knees). This trick is very easy to perform and gets lots of laughs from children and adults alike.

  • Forgetful Santa

Normally called “Forgetful Freddy”, here it’s made nicely as a wooden Santa figure that stands two feet in height. The effect is that Santa is so forgetful that he even forgets his head. His head is vanished (by use of a “Devil’s hank” which is included). Then a balloon is decorated with facial features and put in place of his head. The magician says the magic word. The balloon pops and Santa’s head is restored instantly. A wonderful effect that is easy to perform.

You can find all the above items at www.hocus-pocus.com, a good online magic store that is frequently updated with the latest tricks. If you are performing for Christian meetings or churches and would like to perform tricks with a gospel message, you can find lots of gospel tricks and props at www.gospelmagic.com.

Until next time, prepare well for your Christmas shows and have a wonderful time performing them!
