Colon Cancer – Also Called Colorectal Cancer

Built by Dr. Kiran Paranjape on Tuesday, February 21st, 2006

Cancer of the Colon is the cancer of large intestine and its lower part, rectum which opens to the exterior at anal opening. It is also called colorectal cancer. 75% of the colorectal cancers occur in the rectum and rest in the large intestine. It is the second most common type of cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death worldwide. Both men and women are equally affected especially after 40 years of age. It is interesting to know that about 80% of colorectal cancers occur in cases without any significant risk factors.

The growths that occur in colon are of two types, non cancerous growths called polyp and malignant growths called cancers. Most common type of colon cancer is adenocarcinoma i.e. the cancer arising from the glands in the inner lining of the large intestine. The cancer that originates in the connective tissue is called sarcoma and if arising from lymphatics in the connective tissue called lymphosarcoma. Rarely found tumors are carcinoids and gastrointestinal stromal tumors.
