What is cord blood? Cord blood is the blood that remains in the placenta after birth. It also includes blood remaining in the umbilical cord after it is cut. It’s usually discarded and is a rich source of stem cells. Many families are now choosing to bank these genetically unique cord blood stem cells for the future health of their loved ones.

Cord blood can be used to help many things. For example, leukemia, blood disorders, cancers, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, spinal cord injuries, heart repair, and stroke. You may also find that some family history diseases are treatable with cord blood stem cells.

This is a quick start to understanding what cord blood is.

Cord blood is collected once the baby is born. It is a 5 minute procedure and is painless for everyone.

Check with your insurance provider. Many still do not cover the expense of cord blood collection. Most cord blood banks offer payment plans however. Costs vary depending on the cord blood bank so check around. More important than cost go with the service you feel the most comfortable with in your cord blood bank selection.
