Countdown to Christmas with fun advent ideas

Built by Sherrie Le Masurier on Thursday, November 15th, 2007

Looking for some creative ways for your kids to countdown to Christmas? If so, here’s some easy ways to make the days leading up to Christmas day fun.

Make An Advent Candle

With acrylic paint mark and number 24 sections. Start with 1 at the top and 24 at the bottom. Each night at dinner, burn down one section.

Count-The-Days Cookies

Make, or buy plain cookies and number 1 to 24 with icing. Once the icing is dry, wrap and place in freezer. Take a cookie out each day until Christmas.

A Week Of Gifts

Make Santa sacks for your children each December. Fill with a select number of inexpensive wrapped gifts purchased throughout the year at sidewalk sales and yard sales. A seven day countdown works well. Each child unwraps one gift each day leading up to Christmas.

Cherokee Ceremonial Countdown

Another fun idea is starting your own version of a Cherokee Ceremony using tie knots in a rope. Have one knot for each day remaining until Christmas. Hang on the child’s doorknob and each night, untie one knot.

Countdown Chain

Make a simple paper link chain special by numbering the strips from 1 to 24. Write a special message or event on each link before you stick them together in order.

Candy Calendar

For an easy to make advent countdown, tape a piece of hard candy to each block on a wall calendar.
