This helps to fool the eye into thinking that there is more space than there actually is. A high border can also help to create space by appearing to raise the ceiling level. Bright or bold colors will have an opposite effect.

Shelving, especially shelving with open areas, can also create space for selling real estate. If there is open space on the shelving unit, one’s mind often assumes that there is enough space to hold everything and still have room for more. If the shelving unit is rather small, consider placing small items on it to keep everything in proportion and increase the odds of it tricking the mind. Keeping the area clear of clutter will help to increase the perceived space.
