Having the ability to cook and create gourmet foods with artistic presentations is truly a gift. There are many moms, grandmas (and yes, men) who really love the idea of cooking for others and who do make the whole realm of food creation look like fun. Some of those cook for fun, but others are more seriouslycontemplating making cooking into a career.

How do you know if it’s time to take the plunge? Having a heart and skill for cooking is certainly a good start when considering a culinary arts career. But that is only a small part of what is necessary to succeed. You will need to attend a good culinary arts school and to do that, you will need to research what culinary arts colleges are available to you. Here are some recommended steps for helping you decide if the culinary arts field is the right one for you.

1. Do you have a natural ability to cook or do you like to cook?

2. Are you creative?

3. Do you have the stamina that it is going to take to work the long hours necessary, standing on your feet in an oftentimes, busy, crowded kitchen environment with hot items in the ovens or cooking on hot stoves?

4. Have you ever visited a busy restaurant’s kitchen to see what is happening behind the scenes?

5. Can you handle employees asking questions while your bosses and waitresses are barking orders at you?

6. Do you recognize that a pressure cooker is not just a pot, but can be the entire situation you are in as a chef, cook, or manager of a busy kitchen?

If you’ve answered most of the questions above with a yes, then you should consider attending a culinary arts college.

Here is a second set of questions specifically regarding attending a culinary arts college.

1. What would be your career goal? Are you looking to be a great chef in a famous restaurant, or perhaps starting your own restaurant? Are you looking to assist a great chef in a well known restaurant? Do you want to work in a restaurant in other capacities and are not so much concerned about becoming world famous? These questions are important because of the investment in time and money you will be making in any one of the culinary arts colleges.

2. After you have decided the answer to #1, where are you willing to relocate to or do you want to stay locally? Those who have chosen to become great chefs must choose a culinary arts college more carefully. You will need to attend only the best culinary arts schools if you wish to be recognized and successful. There are many ways to identify those schools.

3. Time to go on the internet and research where the culinary arts colleges are. Just go to google and type in culinary arts colleges in San Francisco (substitute the name of your city), or you can just do a broader search the first time to see how many culinary arts schools there are across the USA (or internationally). Then you can start to narrow your list down.

4. Make a short list. Narrow those schools down geographically, or by certification or reputation. Some career schools already are known for being the best. You can do another google search for the best culinary arts colleges and read some of the opinions on the schools and then visit their websites for more comments.

5. The next major factor is going to be cost. Culinary arts colleges are expensive for the most part. You will need to speak with the Director of Admissions or an Admissions Representative who will hopefully level with you and tell you what the total costs will be.

6. Make an even shorter list and then start callling some of the schools. Have a check list available. 1. What are the basic qualifications to get into the school? 2. Do they have a career placement program and if they do, how successful are they in placing (chefs, cooks, managers, bakers, etc.). You will want to ask that question specifically about the area of employment you would be most interested in. Ask for hard statistics and ask for the names of the restaurants or the types of restaurants the people have been placed in. If they say Joe’s Diner and you were expecting a Ritz Carlton, then maybe the culinary arts college isn’t quite right for you. 3. How much is the program going to cost (books, materials, credits, etc)?

7. Pick out two or three schools and make appointments to visit them. You don’t have to decide, but you do need to see what each school has to offer and take notice of the people and the campus itself. Remember, you are making an investment toward your future.

Once again, there is so much more and this article could go on for pages and you can read more about finding the right culinary arts colleges and making the most of this great profession. Visit: http://www.culinaryartscollegesite.com
