Day Trading, the perfect home based business?

Built by J. Black on Sunday, July 23rd, 2006

You will note the question mark in the subject line. I am so tired of hearing and reading everywhere that day trading is some easy gig that anybody can buy and ebook or take some course and suddenly become an expert at. Nothing could be further from the truth. Don’t get me wrong I understand that most of the people touting this nonsense are people trying to sell you that ebook or course and shame on them.

Day Trading could very well be the perfect home based business. But like any business it takes work, effort and a skill set. If day trading was as simple as these snake oil salesmen would have you believe why with all their simple foolproof systems does the day trading game still sport a 90% failure rate among new traders?

Well sadly a good part of that is due to this con-men. If you want to learn to trade, I mean really want to learn you have to take course and learn about the market and learn how to control your emotions most of all. But the way NOT to become a trader is easy, buy any one of these Day Trading Made Easy type course and then flush your money down the toliet.

I speak from experience having purchased many of them in my time to learn to experiment and just out of plain curiosity. 99% of them give you a bunch of mumbo jumbo about how rich they are going to make you while they quote killer trading days in their salespitch all the while neglecting to tell you those are demo results and a blind monkey could be in profit on a demo account.

Ok so what draws people to these people? It’s the lure of day trading, the ability to get up in the morning fire up that computer and click a few buttons and poof you’re up a few grand before you used to be taking your first coffee break of the day when you worked for the “man”. They sell hope, they sell dreams. They just leave out the real learning curve to get there.

Day Trading can be great, the upside is amazing, you really do get to be your own boss. You obviously can set your own hours within reason, depending on what markets you plan to trade. Unlike many online businesses out there you don’t have to recruit friends and family and you don’t need any of those crazy uplines, downlines, powerlines, upside down super duper matrixes… just little old you and your computer.

But don’t be fooled into the hype about how easy it is, or you too will end up on the heap of broken traders. Learn about day trading, learn the markets read some books, join a few trading sites, really see if this is what you are cut out to do. It’s really not for everyone.

When you’ve taken all the steps needed to get as much as you can, well then and maybe then you can start looking into various trading methods out there. But don’t fall for the old con, there are NOT secrets to trading, no old floor trader on his death bed passed on the secret method to make you rich, so don’t waste your money on those things. If you want to trade, hang out with traders, not MLMers.

If you need or want any further info on this crazy day trading game, drop me a line. I love to talk trading.

WOW Thanks for the info on optionstrading lab. The info is well worth the price.

  2. Emyers says:

Hi guys, I've been practicing on the QQQQ for awhile after taking WSB and Advanced. I'm starting to get a feel for how it moves but I'm still getting beaten a lot. Does anyone have any pearls they could impart to me or point me in the right direction? Otherwise I'll just keep practicing on that ol' path to mastery. Thanks! address@removed

    • Emyers says:

oh and i know the all sessions should be enabled on the futures charts... what about the others? I've scoured the manual and i didn't see anything referencing this.

    • jimmy says:

During the summer the parameters set up in the class work ok, but remember its a small chart. Any market noise can kill your trade. I usually trade Qs on bigger charts mostly 55. I traded the Qs for a long time. Using 21/13/1 minutes charts. It worked well but it is a grind. You don't want another job. Just keep that in mind.

      • Emyers says:

Thanks for your reply. So you now trade QQQQs on a Daily-55-21 ? Did you still use 55 futures for 21/13/1 or 21 futures? And hell no I don't want another job.

I noticed a bunch of Gary Williams WSB posts on this page. I'm curious if there is a blog site or location where students meet? I am a former 1-5 and Advanced class student.

Thankful, The site that swingtrader talks about is Researchtrader.com Use the promotion code Indyadvisor and you should receive a discount. These are 2 students from gary's class that started this site. There is anothe site that is for free. That site is q-chartsplugins.com. Both these sites are for earnings research. The turtle traders just go to www.turtletraders.com. from there they tell the story about the turtle and it will take you to the info you are looking for. On Gary I take him like listening to cnbc. You have to filter out the noise and listen for the nugget. I can appreciate his passion, but i agree he does ramble on but what are you going to do. hope this info helps

    • Thankful says:

Thank you! thank you! thank you! I really do thank Gary too, the reading was most beneficial during my divorce, although the "stocks" played a big part in the divorce. A rule follower should not marry a rule breaker! I learned alot from Gary.

      • pl1961 says:

Not a problem, Sorry to hear about your divorce. I know how you feel. I didn't go through a divorce but I had to close up my company due to the economy and personally lost 1.4 million dollars. It has been a rough 2 yrs espically dealing with lawyers. Keep up the good work. Remember this system works. I do ok with it but my cousin is retired with appx 30,000 monthly and growing. Please don't let any one discourage you. You have to work hard to achieve success and most of society wants the easy way out. Any other questions don't hesitate to write

        • Thankful says:

Thanks again! I know what you mean with lawyers. GW just beat that stop loss into my head. It applies (along with the dead cat bounce) to all aspects of your life! I was able to recognize emotional things. seperate those out and take measures to protect myself and those that I am responsible for... Amazing how developing the discipline to trade applies to your life as well. You always have to protect the vault first!!!! Protect the vault then fall apart...that was my mantra! And the vault can be many things. Sorry about your company losses. I can't even phathom that amount of money. Keep intouch. God bless you.

          • pl1961 says:

Well thats life. It took me a long time to get over it espically when my brother which was my partner left me holding the bag. I thank God every day for what I have. A great wife 21yrs and 2 beautiful girls. The rest is just money. I will make it back. Don't hesitate to call God bless you as well

      • pl1961 says:

another thing the options trading lab is awesome. You will learn so much and also useing the think and swim platform. My cousin ues's that more than gary's system. Although I asked him would gary's system work in today's market and he states with out a doubt. They are 2 different ways of trading

  4. Bohica says:

I've heard the mantra more than once that if you don't follow Gary's Rules you have no one to blame but yourself, but what exactly are those rules? Is it the 1000 pages of notes some people take? Who can trade having to reference something like that? If you can't articulate your trading system in a couple of pages, you can't trade. Check out the Turtle Traders. Gary is the real deal, but seems unwilling to boil it down because then he'd be held accountable. He won't even tell you what type of trader he is. (He's a trend following swing trader). My biggest complaint? His presentation is a disorganized jumble. He doesn't remotely define an entry or an exit until RTP. Most of the stuff in 1-5 is Advanced and the stuff in Advanced is technique. As I began to conclude (after two years) it was discorganized and vague on purpose it began to affect how I saw Gary. He does have a lot of acolytes who believe in him. Not sure how many are actually successful.

    • pl1961 says:

Bohica, I don't know what your problem is with gary. It seems like every student that can't figure it ou t blames the teacher. Remember Gary may not be a college person but made l=millions in the market and made millions teaching. If I made a fortune in he market I would be doing the same thing. My cousin took Gary'S class and today is retired after 3-yrs. Following the rules. I have personally met 10 other people that are retired from gary's classes. I guess you must of been asleep in wsb1-5 because it clearly talks about entry and exit points in the charting section. Do you even have Q-charts set up. No wait you are the 80% that fail and complain about it. Trading is not a game and if you treat it like it you will get killed. I will give you some advice if you like options. Check out www.options trading lab. I will cost you 137.00 and you can watch the videos a million times if you like. They will teach you about options like know body has done before. They will talk about the think and swim platform which in my opinion is the best platform on the market. If that doesn't help ya than I guess stick to your day job. Remember if this was easy everyone would be doing it. Last thursday when the market tanked almost 1,000 points and friday it tanked over 300 points I saw professionals on cnbc that were staying away. You must keep the no quit clause and do what ever it takes to get ahead. Gary does ramble on but the reason why I like him is that he is the only one that taught his class and he made the money, Not like some teachers that teach but are not millionaires today, but let yo believe they know what they are doing. Try options trading lab you will not be dissapointed. Good reading material options trading 101 by bill johnson or the option stragedy bible by Guy Cohen. Best of luck

      • Bohica says:

Ouch! I hope you're satisfied. I'm talking about a man okay. And I'm not blaming Gary, I'm criticizing his presentation. Although I didn't say it, I give Gary a lot of credit. What I was trying to point out was that his presentation is disorganized and that if you can't boil the rules down to a few pages (that is the students job, Gary does not do it) then you can't trade and you shouldn't trade until you've done that. He's proud of the fact that people take many hundreds, if not thousands of pages of notes. (I'm already a Christian, a military vet, and voted Republican, and I'm not there for that stuff and Knife to the Throat is an attitude, not a rule, okay?) Ultimately, YOU have to take those many pages of notes and figure out what the rules are. And no, 1-5 does not give you an entry, it gives you an approach to identifying a trade. DE gives you an entry and its a completely separate course of study to obtain that rule. Truthfully, most of what is taught is technique. Here are the rules as I use them to trade: 1. Trade in the direction of the trend. 2. Use FP or HRFP to identify a trade 3. Use DE for entry in the direction / trend indicated on the big chart. 4. If the big chart is at the limits of the BB, wait for a pull back to enter on a smaller chart in the direction / trend of the big chart. Or trade the pull back itself on a smaller chart, exiting when it gets to the opposite BB while checking the indicators on the next higher chart for possible continuation. 5. Before making the trade, always, always, always identify the direction of the market and the big chart. Know whether you are trading in that direction or against that direction. 6. Identify an exit or a stop loss. Mine is the opposite BB NO MATTER WHAT on the chart I'm trading or 2% stop out on a reversal from my entry price. BAsically that's it. Pretty good stuff. All from Gary, but other than terminology, and the use of DE, its also pretty standard and can be found other places. I like it. My problem was that to justify the cost, he makes it more complicated than it needs to be and is somewhat self agrandizing... never mind. I've already said it. Trade Well, Practice, Achieve Choice. And don't presume the person you're lecturing doesn't know more about the subject than you do.

        • pl1961 says:

The only thing I agree with you is the knife in the throat. I thought that was uncalled for. I didn't like the fact that you only had so much time alloted. Gary's ramblings well you have to filter through it. We know gary is not a college man and his approach is out there but he has become a self made millionaire and he took it upon himself to try to help as many people as he can. The price is expensive but it seem everybody in the stock market teaching business charges 10-15 grand. Yes you can get this material from books but you would be reading forever. I believe for the amount of money he charges we should get a copy of the cd's, but it's his rules. Regarding being complicated. I didn't find it that bad. Although for me I had my cousin plus there is a gentleman in our condo that is an RTP student and doing quite well and if I have a Question he will help me out. I guess my question to you after 2 yrs how successful are you?.. If you are doing well than Gary has helped. If you hadn't taken his class where would you be today.. Buy the way pg 40 in class 2 talks about enty in to a trade from trend to decision to action. Nice chatting with you. I can appreciate your rebuttle. It brings out the fire in people. And for you being a military I thank-you for serving our country. The people that serve never get thanked enough for providing the safety and freedom we have and enjoy

          • Bohica says:

And I very much appreciate the recommendations you provide in your post. Thanks for you patience and your response. Good luck!!

          • Thankful says:

Hi Guys, I have enjoyed all the comments and have found them to be very useful. I found the options lab site but not the turtle trading site... nor the one swingtrader talks about. Could you provide a better address for the turtle trader- it was be much appreciated. Just had some higly emotional life changing situations come to a close and need to start practicing again.. Gary always said to not trade when alot of personal stuff was going on but to stive to not let it affect you. I learned a lot from him and I did find the rant a little long winded (especially during the RTP retake)but I honestly used a lot of what I read in the books (how to handle emotions and always have a good lawyer) and from Gary too during this time.. Thanks for the help....

          • RCbound says:

I am a beginer student under Gary and have poured over his material and cds for nearly 2 years. I finally took the leap and started "practice trading" 2 months ago obeying all Gary's rules. I would like to identify a "successful" advanced student (a local mentor) that I can call &/or meet with to bounce ideas off. Please respond to RCbound (Retirement Choice bound). Thanks in advance!

      • djpl8 says:

Thanks for the info on optionstrading lab. The info is well worth the price. I first took classes 1-5 about 4 years ago through mail order and I'm working on the process every day and am getting better and better. I truly beleive my life has changed for the better because of Gary.

Hi Bohica, I have been trying to visit with someone about the DE class. How can I get in touch with you?

      • Bohica says:

Dan, What would you like to know? If you want to post your question and leave an email address, I'll do my best to answer your question short of telling you what DE is and how its used. Bohica

        • John says:

Bohica, Thank you for your responses that you posted. I have been looking for someone who has had experience with RTP/DE - as I wan to enroll in the courses the next time they are offered. Could you provide your insight into the courses and recommend any other informative sources/books? Thank you in advance.

  5. swingtrader says:

I paid thousands for Gary's courses and wasted thousands more on QCharts. There is a reason less than 3% of his students succeed, and it is because many never take another coures and give up trading. Frankly, any course that ignores volume and uses tons of indicators is a recipe for disaster. I am now making more than 5% monthly simply using price and volume and fundamentals. The cost? $50 membership fee to a site that teaches it. The guy gives back by teaching others to trade. Gary gives nothing. I consider the $7200 a waste and only beefitted Gary. He is a salesman and his verbally abusive teaching style is ineffective. In fact I find him to be arrogant and a very good actor.

    • wasted too says:

I agree with you. What is the name of the site that you are now using?

    • pl1961 says:

Swingtrader, I believe if you are useing reasearch trade.com they are 2 of Gary's students. And what platform are you useing instead of Q-charts

  6. 24Kdollar MAN says:

Hey, sorry, i use to be the 21k man, now its 24k man. I rarely trade the QQQQs. Mainly earnings. I like www.researchtrade.com as well as my individual picks that correspond with earnings research.

  7. jmhill says:

Ha yea I tried to figure out what he did w/ the Qs for a long time. 55 trade 13 minute B2B and he takes about 25c. I don't trade the Qs much any more but did have fun trying to figure out his formula. To me the Qs work better on bigger charts now.

  8. jmhill says:

For those of you that do earnings research check out http://qchartsplugins.com. I am a WSB/RTP/DE students You might find them useful. They are 100% free.

I originally took Gary's class in the spring of '99. And I can tell you he is the read deal!! I remember taking the class before the cd's, books, or manuals. For the people who are looking the "magic indicator" to trade, or the "secret". Sorry you will not find it with his classes. But, if you are not afraid of hard work then you will get out of it what you put in!! Also, I would like to start a "trading group" where we can meet once or twice a month and discuss strategy etc. I'm in the Raleigh, NC area. send me an email if interested address@removed

I've know Gary Williams for over 20 years, I worked with him many years at the same place he talks about on his cd's. He is exactly today who he was then just a lot more successful. His course is a work thing. He is honest, hard working, and generous. As a lot of successful people he is opinionated and passionate. I am truly glad to have met him, I find myself quoting him often.

Hello out there, is there anyway that a qcharts subscription can be shared? I can not afford it and would like to pay (via paypal) anyone who is willing to allow me to share. If one user can download it on multiple computers at work and home, then this should work. I'm in the Charlotte area. thanks

  22. Tarheelgirl says:

Hey guys, for those of us who "understand" Gary and his teachings...I took 1-5 about 6 times and advanced twice....and had a personal relationship with him, invited to his house for parties and recordings. Anyway I found two other class mates who basically took the "hard work of all the research" and programed to a website. It's called researchtrade.com. They give you what a particular stock has done the last 10 years in a particular time frame and entry points. I just can't believe my success with them. Because of all my success on this site trading, they game me a promotion code and if you go sign up and use this code you get the site for $12 instead of $15. It's "Indyadvisor"....and it's the best money you will spend. not $200/ month or more that other sites charge! it's incredible being one of Gary's students....I have choice and do not work but I get a lot of good trades with this website!!

  23. TraderCASH says:

I took WSBS 9 times and advanced 2x. Gary is right. I lost about 12,000 from NOT following the rules. I learned alot about my losses and almost breakeven at this point...from here, it gets easier... goodluck

  24. Ed says:

I've been doing Gary's system for about 15 months now, having purchased the CDs. Am trying to do all 'by the book', i.e. following all the rules all the time, as Gary says. I'd appreciate some general comments from current users of his system that it still works in today's markets. I know the CDs were recorded about 5 years ago, so I'm just looking for reassurance that his techniques still work, in spite of all that's happened these last couple years.

  25. paul says:

To all the negative people. stop whinning and admit you are part of the 80 percent that gave up. Does anyone understand that gary put 17 yrs into this and is very successful and now is helping others. I hear nobody complaining on how much parents spend on college and there kids can't find a job or have no clue on how to make money. If I did the same thing as gary did I would be helping people but I would be Charging a price also. Last I checked printing books or cd's cost money and so does knowledge. I have witnessed my cousin doing gary"s system and he is 2 yrs into it and is fully retired and making between 15-40 thousand after taxes. He has me taking the course and Am half way through it and looking forward to start. The amazeing thing about this course is there is no competition just you and the stock market. If you made the same amount that you do at your job but a fraction of the time isn't it worth it. We should be thankful we have people like gary to show us how to better our lives and spend more time with our families. I personally ran a successful plumbing company until the real-estate market tanked and 80 percent filed bankruptcy, and I was forced to close our doors. This system will allow me the same income I made as an employer but with-out the hassle of employee's or customers who don't want to pay. To the people who do nothing but complain do what gary say's GET A JOB AND MAKE SOMEONE ELSE RICH.

We have a guy here at work trading Gary's system and he says that he's been more successful then he's ever dreamed doing it... he said he would retire, but his job is pretty easy so he doesn't mind doing both. I've been putting in about 3 hours a night for 3 years with Investools, but this guy said I should definitely check out Gary's system.

  28. paul lapointe says:

I am getting ready to start the course, and I have a cousin that is doing very well. he states it does require discipline but 2yrs later he works appx 2-3 hrs a day and is RETIRED. looking forward to start

rtrading, I can help I have been trading for three years and have helped many get started and be sucessful. I must say that it is a lot of work, more work that learning to play the piano. It is mostly mindset, wanting to be sucessful reguardless of anything else. Singleminded to get started, a willingness to learn hard to see things, sometimes the acceptance that you will eventually get it, and a Quiting is not a option mindset. Boot camp begains when you fax the front cover of your WSS book to 555-555-1212.

Unfortunately, I don't have much contact with him. I am practicing trading now, and have questions that I can't seem to find answers to by practicing. I regret not going through the classes with others to have "trading friends" to discuss success and failures. Is there anyone who has taken Gary's course and open to working through the learning curve together? Please understand, I am not looking to get someone else's work, nor am I open to sharing mine. I just seem to have questions as I go along and would like to work through those questions with someone or a small group that I know has taken the course. address@removed

To all the folks asking questions about earnings research and Briefing.com - After I found that the "Platinum" package was no longer offered, I got in with the tech support folks to ask which current service would be most similar. They suggested the "Briefing Professional" which I have now. They were updating their database for quite sometime (the historic earnings dates, etc...), and for a few months they gave me a temporary Platinum account so that I could keep doing the work while the new database was updated. It is fixed now, and those with a Professional account should be able to get access to it. (1. Click on "Earnings & Events", 2. Type in the symbol next to 'ticker' window, 3. Select the "Date Range" drop down and check "All". Took me a bit to figure this out. Hope it helps. A few other notes... QCharts is currently updating their 'tick' database as well for version 6. They say it'll be available in the summer. Accordingly, I've got BOTH version 5 and 6 packages installed so I 'only have to touch the stock once'. The yahoo historic prices may now be exported via excel. (Scroll to the bottom of the first page, "Download to spreadsheet.") DO NOT be an idiot like I was at first and get carried away analyzing the data with that program. I only mentioned this because you'll save paper and some time by printing in that consolidated, excel, format vs. clicking page by page through the data on yahoo. Do the work as Gary instructs. If anything I've said inadvertently goes against something in the manual, follow the manual. Good luck to all. -'Thomas'

Johnny Day, I'll help you, but you first must pass my test. FAX me the front cover of your 1-5 book and leave a email address and I will help you, maybe. Gary has unlimited assets to attack a broken covenent and will do it.

gdn: Thanks for the suggestion however, briefing.com will not allow new subscribers to get the Gold/Platinum subscriptions. Apparently, briefing.com recently changed their product offering and no longer offers the 'Platunum' or 'Gold' level subscriptions. Their new product offerings DO NOT provide earnings history prior to 2007. I understand that briefing.com used to go back much further and have now changed this with their new product offerings. As the Gold/Platinum subscriptions run out, subscribers will be renewed under one of their new products - with limited earnings history of 2 years. Does anyone know of any other sites that provide earnings history back further than 2 years?

try entering the symbol under earnings calendar from the calendar drop down. that works for me.

  45. gdn says:

ddb: i am a gold member at briefing (which i believe is lower than platinum) and can view all earnings dates. this is what i do...under the calendars drop down near top middle/right of the screen, select earnings calendar. under quick search, enter the symbol. all earnings dates will appear (more than just two years). hope this helps.

I'm a relatively new student of Gary's and I'm trying to do Earnings Research using the history at briefing.com however, their history now only goes back 2 years. I'm looking for another site where I can see ernings history back several years. If anyone knows of such a site, please post it here. Thanks! Apparently, briefing.com recently changed their product offering and no longer offers the 'Platunum' subscription. Now it's either 'In Play' or 'In Play Plus', neither of which provide earnings history prior to 2007. It's my understanding that briefing used to go back much further but have now changed this with their new product offerings. As the Platinum subscriptions run out, subscribers will be renewed under one of their new products.

I am glad to be currently doing the Wall St Basics Seminar, and am learning priceless principles that will help me immeasurably. Yes, Gary is a bit rude and perhaps the most blunt person you will ever meet, but who cares what his political views are? Goodness me, you are trying to learn some financial techniques, you are not marrying the man! Are people so immature that they are unable to let the irrelevant stuff and his personal views go over their heads while holding on to the great nuggets that come along? People who are so sensitive that Gary's personal views and personality offend them should never take the course. Those who can laugh at his ranting and raving and take his personal views with a grain of salt, may just end up greatly benefiting from the very extensive stock market knowledge that he obviously has.

CHC (who posted on Jan. 30) -If you don't mind me asking, how do you go about your W&O plays every month? I know what Gary says is his preferred place to look, but other than that, is there a method you have for finding the stock to play or do you just dig through charts until you see one setting up? I was wondering if you used any kind of "stock screeners" or something like that. I've taken the 1-5 & am currently practicing. I want to take it one thing at a time, so I'm trying to get comfortable with what Gary calls the "falling off a log" trade = W&O. Thanks for any help you can offer. Thanks also for posting - it's good to hear from someone who has actually been successful. Congrats - todd
