Diabetes is more prevalent than cancer

Built by Perriann Rodriguez on Thursday, October 5th, 2006

Scientists and researchers are not quite sure what causes diabetes. They also do not know yet how to cure it. The U.S. Center for Disease Control + Prevention and the National Institute of Health have released statistics on diabetes in young people that indicate a more focused effort to find the cause and cure for diabetes is needed.

What are the chances a young person will get diabetes?

Actually the chances are pretty high, according to recent statistics released by the U.S. Center for Disease control + Prevention and the National Institute of Health concerning diabetes.

Here are the facts:

1.82 children per 1000 have diabetes. This is higher than cancer at 1.24 per 1000 and asthma at 120 per 1000. The incidence for girls (1.88 per 1000) is slightly higher than boys (1.77 per 1000).

This translates to nearly 1 young person in 523 people will get diabetes

90% of children with diabetes under the age of 10 have Type 1 Diabetes. The research indicates that Type 2 diabetes in children is more prevalent today. 20 years ago Type 2 diabetes in children was non-exisitent. The average age of diagnosis in children is 8.4 years old.

And, with more and more children and young people getting diabetes, the complications that arise from having diabetes will happen even sooner. Many of the complications include heart and kidney problems, blindness and nerve damage that can lead to amputations.

So, what is causing this drastic rise in diabetes? Is it what we are eating, what we are breathing, our sedentary lifestyle? We need to address all of these issues to reverse the number of young people getting diabetes.
