Do Oil Skimmers Work Effectively?

Built by Theodore "Ted" Jenkins on Thursday, July 13th, 2006

One of the big questions that pester the minds of people is whether oil skimmers work effectively. Yes, they do provided they are maintained with good care.

The basic function of an oil skimmer is to get rid of oil, fats, and other floating material in sumps, tanks, interceptors, and sewage pits.Oil skimmers can also be utilized in open water bodies such as lakes, lagoons, and harbors.

How Does an Oil Skimmer Work?

Oil skimmer consists of a suspended central ring, an elastic diaphragm (also called bellows), and a body that floats. The central ring is located at the center of the skimmer’s body. The diaphragm enables the skimmer to float independently. Such a design assures that the skimmer always skims the top oil layer from the surface of the liquid. The body of the oil skimmer clutches together all the parts and enables them to float effectively.

The fluid flowing at the top of the oil skimmer comes into the pump-out chamber. The outlet of the skimmer contains a hose and a pump that pump out the skimmed fluid. With the rise in the flow of the fluid, the central ring penetrates deeper into the flowing fluid in such a way that a greater amount of fluid flows on the top of the central ring, and then enters into the pump-out chamber. When this happens, the oil skimmer becomes completely self-adjusting.

When Does the Efficiency of Oil Skimmer Decrease?

Oil skimmers are manufactured in such a way that they are able to single out oil. They work effectively only with oil. If you observe that the skimmer is not attracting and singling out oil, it means that there is something other than oil in the layer. This something is known as biofilm.

A biofilm accumulates because of an excess multiplication of bacteria. An oil layer proves to be an excellent source of food for the bacteria. Hence, they multiply. It is crucial to put bacterial multiplication under control. Not doing so, the mucous like layer will continue to grow, resulting in clogging of filters and lines. It will discharge foul odors too. Moreover, it will corrode the good material of your coolant blend, decreasing the effectiveness of the skimmer drastically.

Hence, it is of vital importance to clean the machine properly and decontaminate it at regular intervals to ward off bacterial growth. After a thorough cleansing process, you should fill it with fresh coolant.

Therefore, the efficiency of oil skimmers depends largely on how you maintain it. Keep your skimmer in good order with regular cleaning and care.
