Do You Know the 7 Deadly Sins of Dressing Up for Halloween?

Built by Nathalie Lussier on Tuesday, September 9th, 2008

Did you know that there are seven deadly sins of dressing up for Halloween? Find out what they are, and how to avoid each one. You will be more prepared for dressing up on Halloween night, and you’ll feel much better knowing that you are one of the most informed Halloweeners on the block, or at the dance.

1. Dressing up as a way to make fun of someone. If you dress up with the intention of ridiculing someone, say a politician or an actor, think twice. Although it can be funny to your friends, some people may take it seriously, and decide to take the subject up with you. In order to avoid this deadly sin, you just need to ask yourself if you would be embarrassed if the person him or herself saw you.

2. You don’t wear a costume at all. You might think that you are making a statement, but everyone is going to look at you and wonder what happened to your costume. Sometimes making a statement is better done I using a metaphor as part of your costume.

3. You wear a costume that is too big or too small for you. Sometimes it can be hard to find a Halloween costume that will fit you, but the extra time and effort spent on acquiring the perfect fit, will be rewarded to you in spades.

4. You begin sweating, and your face paint melts off. Although it might be hard to avoid sweating under a lot of costume equipment, you should at least plan to have a back-up kit for your Halloween makeup. Sometimes just a quick break to go to the bathroom and freshen up your Halloween makeup, can make all the difference.

5. Part of your Halloween costume rips off, or falls off. Have you ever seen someone with only half their Halloween costume on? It’s not pretty. Most of the time your Halloween costume will be ignored, and people will simply remember that you were the silly person who couldn’t get a whole costume together for one night. Avoid this sin by being careful, and not stepping on your costume.

6. You wear the same Halloween costume as someone else. This one can be hard to avoid, especially if you don’t know what everyone else is wearing ahead of time. To avoid this sin, simply ask around and get a feel for what everyone is planning to wear. If you don’t get a definite answer, and you want to be sure that you are original, then think outside the box before you decide on a Halloween costume.

7. You come up with a Halloween costume idea that is so original, so amazing, and funny, that no one knows what it is. If you need a sign to explain what your Halloween costume is, then you’re doing it wrong. Make sure that people can understand what your costume is, and make it very clear.
