Do You Need a Down Comforter Cover?

Down comforters are wonderfully luxurious items of bedding, but they’re also a big investment. Full of down from geese or ducks, and sometimes other feathers, they’re warm without being heavy, and pleasant to sleep under. They’re also very hard to clean if they get dirty, and should be washed infrequently to keep them looking and feeling their best. That’s why down comforter covers are a common purchase among people who own this type of bedding.

You should only clean your down comforter once every few years. Putting a cover on it prevents it from getting extremely dirty in this time, and allows you to change the look of your down comforter or duvet whenever you like. The chief enemies of your comforter are skin oils, sweat, and just plain dirt. They can degrade the cloth, make it look bad, and even give it an unpleasant odor. If you use a down comforter cover, it will absorb the dirt and odor, and can be tossed in the washing machine when it needs to be freshened. Always follow the washing instructions that came with your comforter cover, of course. They often need to be washed on the gentle cycle, and most should not be washed in hot water.

If you take good care of your down comforter, it will serve you for many years – some can last for as long as fifty years, and there are even heirloom down comforters. However, routine washing because your comforter isn’t protected by a cover will shorten its lifespan appreciably. So, if you want to get the most out of your investment, purchase a down comforter cover along with your new bedding. Already have a duvet or down comforter? Find a cover to match. It’s not hard – just measure your bedding and buy a good cover that’s the same dimensions. Look for natural fabrics and quality stitching, and you’re sure to find one that will make you happy and last a while.

Everyone who uses a down comforter should protect it with a cover. If you’ve been thinking of going without, or someone has told you they’re a waste of money, think again! Skimping on the cover is false economy, since it’ll save you a lot more in the long run. Buy a down comforter cover for your bedding, and keep it safe and looking great. These protective items don’t have to be expensive, and they’re an excellent idea in the long run.
