Earn a creative income from Photography

Built by Jerry Holliday on Wednesday, October 18th, 2006

If you enjoy your photography perhaps it’s time to look at ways of earning a creative income from what you enjoy doing the most.

You could try displaying your work on a number of online libraries that are always on the lookout for quality photographs. Graphic and web designers are constantly looking for an inexpensive way to download quality photos and illustrations and even video footage, which are royalty free to incorporate into their design projects.

If you’re happy to make your work available on a royalty free basis this could be a superb way to enjoy your hobby and get paid for it as well. Who knows? You might make a name for yourself and build a career out of it.

Online photo libraries such as istockphoto.com, photolibrary.com and shutterstock.com offer such a service to talented individuals. At istockphoto.com you read through a quiz and then do a simple test to ensure you understand their terms. When you are accepted, you can start uploading files and earn royalties when your photos get downloaded.

Artists earn royalties for every image downloaded and earnings can be used for credits or cashed out. Shutterstock will pay you 25 cents every time one of your images is downloaded. The 25 cents payout can add up fast. For example, if your pictures are downloaded 1000 times over the course of a month, you will receive $250 for that month! Certainly better than gathering dust on your hard disc.

Another useful resource is stockphoto.net which lists stock photography agencies as well as listings of experts in the field who can help you develop your stock photography income by offering advice on agencies, contracts and more.
