Before I tell you what’s not to like about the Edenpure quartz infrared heater, I’d like to spend a minute telling you what I do like about the Edenpure, and how it works.
How the EdenPure Works
At the heart of these infrared heaters are the quartz bulbs. Similar to incandescent lamps, quartz bulbs are formed by enclosing a tungsten resistance wire within a high purity quartz sheath. They provide even, non drying floor to ceiling heat and, according to the manufacturer, reduce positive ions in the atmosphere responsible for many respiratory problems. The bulbs are rated to last 5 – 7,000 hours and cost around $10 each to replace.
The Edenpure/SunTwin heaters are offered in 3 sizes: 500, 1,000, and 1,500 watt and the unit model numbers coincide with the heat output in watts. So a Suntwin 1500 Elite produces 1,500 watts. The heaters are thermostatically controlled, equipped with a circuit breaker, and have a 1 year warranty.
What I Do Like About the EdenPure Quartz Infrared Heater
It has a cool to the touch exterior and, unlike some other heaters, doesn’t have glowing red wires or an exposed fan. This is a big plus if you have kids and/or pets.
Despite the complaints some consumers have with it, I haven’t found one that is health or safety related.
What’s Not to Like
The #1 complaint of consumers who have actually purchased the heater comes down to this: Too little heat for too much money. Putting aside the cost factor for a moment, I’ll address the “too little heat” complaint first.
Too Little Heat
The results you get from a 1,500 watt heater, EdenPure or otherwise, depends on how it’s being used. Bear in mind, a 1,500 watt heater is the equivalent of only 5,000 Btus. This is minuscule compared to a typical 65,000 btu oil or gas fired furnace.
If you’re depending on a 1,500 watt heater as your only heat source, it will heat only 150 – 200 square feet depending on how well your home is insulated, obstructions to the flow of heat, such as walls, and the outside temperature.
Here’s the basic “rule of thumb” formula for calculating space heater capacity:
Watts/10 = heated space in square feet. Or: 1,500/10 = 150.
However, if you use a space heater to supplement your existing heating system by turning back the thermostat and letting the space heater pick up the slack, you could increase the effective heating range of a 1,500 watt heater to 600 square feet.
Too Much Money
I chalk this up to what I call the “furniture factor.” You can either buy a space heater that looks like a space heater, or one that complements your decor and doubles as an end table.
An even better example of the “furniture factor” is the electric fireplace. No matter which electric fireplace you look at, they all have the same 1,500 watt heater. Yet, depending on the design of the mantel piece, you could easily spend 2 or 3 times more on an electric fireplace than an EdenPure quartz infrared heater.
The difference is this: Most people who buy an electric fireplace are looking for furniture and everyone who buys an EdenPure portable heater is looking for heat.

iHeater is advertising their infrared heaters here in Michigan. Selling them at a 50% discount. I did my research - they are made in China and they are junk.
Can anybody tell us what's wrong with the heater if it runs for 5 minutes and then shuts off?

HAVE A EDENPURE MODEL 500 USED ONE SEASON WORKS NO LONGER. LIGHT COMES ON AT ON/OFF SWITCH; THERMOSTAT IN BACK CLICKS ON AND OFF WHEN ROTATED, BUT FAN DOESN'T WORK NO DO ANY OF THE 3 QUARTZ BULBS. TRIED WITH FILTER IN OR OUT. ANY SUGGESTIONS?
I purchased a Eden Pure Sun Twin 1500 in Dec. 2007 and after a month or two it wouldn't stay running and woul have to unplug it for 10 minutes then start it up again. Took it to where I bought it and they told me there was a filter problem and to run it without the filter. I used it that way the rest of the heating season and in 2008. I started having the same problem toward the end of the 2008 heating season. At the beginning of this season I took it in and they told me there was a sensor bad and they replaced it and put on a new filter $60. Now the bearing in fan is bad another $50 to $ 80 depending on whether the fan or just the bearing need to be replaced. David Pletcher

I recently purchased a heater. However whenever I turn it on my dog starts whimpering and cowering and runs to the farthest part of the house. I'm not sure what this is about. Has anyone else had similar problems with their pets?

TO HAROLD REGIS: (FIRST, I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT THIS PRODUCT AND AM NOT COMMENTING ON WHETHER ONE SHOULD BUY IT OR NOT) I think you don't get it. With change, yes, some jobs become obsolete but other jobs are created. Plus, why would you spend money on a lesser product to keep someone working. This is similar thinking to the regarding the B1B bomber. Because it had plants in like 42 state, the government was hesitant to shut it down. Not good politics. The point is to use the money saved to create other jobs. Also, how about paying people more and lessening their hours? There is no reason that better technology should not benefit all of us, not just CEO'S making millions of dollars.

My electric bill skyrocketed using this product for only a few hours a day. It cannot keep 400 sq. ft warm ,let alone 1000 sq. ft. I wonder how much they paid Bob Villa to endorse this product . He should be ashamed of himself. Very crafty advertising on Edenpure's part I must admit. All this BS about clinging to the water molecules and evenly dispersing heat in the room. Any thermal chemist would shake his head at this foolishness. But you dont have to fool the chemists. All you have to do is fool the ignorant masses and Edenpure gets A+ for that.
Got two from somebody that told me they won't work. I finally got into them, and found the first in-line series wired element had gone electrically open got another element which was number 2 in-line and put it the number one slot. the thing works now, but I'm pretty sure the first is a fused type Quartz MediumWave element. I found it to be true 40+ screws and time it takes makes thing not worth the money. They said they paid a lot for it. Thumbs Down On This One.

If Bob Vila endorses a product... stay away! Mr. Vila can't even secure a job on PBS.
save money my ass, the thing more then doubled the electric bill and only works when it wants.save your money buy gas.....

The worst decision I have ever made was to buy not one but two Eden Pure heaters they worked one season then broke I returned them to get fixed and they got fixed. They broke the next season but this time they were not warranty. What a huge waste of money. The only reason I bought the ting was Paul Harvey endorsed them. I hope the heaters did not drive him to his grave. Very unsatisfied, Bill

As an update ,I finally did get my refund from American Sewing and Vacuum, without having to go through my credit card co. so I am thankfull for that. Still, I am upset that I was put through the anxiety I experienced, and that it took a week for them to correct their mistake. At least they did finally return my money. As for this product, I believe it is severely overpriced (by a factor of at least 5). Plus, when the bulbs go, my understanding is that you cannot replace them yourself. You have to send the unit back at your OWN expense. The shipping cost alone could buy you a perfectly good heater. Lesson: The old adage still holds true: IF IT SOUNDS TO0 GOOD TO BE TRUE ,IT PROBABLY IS!" Edenpure is all about advertising and making outlandish claims which stretch the truth every which way. Don't try products like this unless you have done your research, and can buy them at a reputable store in your vicinity, who stand by what they sell, and will refund you completely and immediately if you are are not satisfied. I am still left with my unit which cost me 574$ and I am going to keep it and use it in a bonus room over my garage. The unit is heating this space nicely so far, however we have not hit real cold weather yet, for me to do a complete evaluation. Also ,I have not seen my electric bill yet, so I am holding my breath that it will not be much inflated. I have my doubts. My mistake is that I fell for the hype of the advertisement, and failed to read sites like this before buying. Furthermore,I would suggest that you can't trust the good reports on this product, because you have no idea wheather or not they are plants from the manufacturer. That is why you have so many mixed reviews. Someone has said you cant trust the bad reports on these units either, because they could be imposters trying to discredit a perfectly good product. All I know is I am a real consumer who is trying this product for real and so far I am not impressed.
I'm soooooo glad I read all these posts! I was ready to purchase one of the Edencrap units and there is NO friken way that I would now! I would recommend to ALL that read such posts, research everything you are thinking about buying. You WILL benefit by saving boo-koo money!!! Mr. Merrell
Have you ever wondered why these defective heaters are not sold in reputable hardware stores? I suspect it is because no legitimate store would want to sell this Edencrap . Almost all of them end up broken, defective or just plain underperforming, and no store would want the headache of having to refund this junk. They are sold from some warehouse far away so when you go to return them, Edenpure and its unscrupulous distributors can frustrate you to no end in getting a repair/refund. If they give you enough runaround, then you are probably just going to give up and suck up your loss. Edenpure and its distributors are scamers and they know it.
Just purchased edenpure 1000 and wish I hadnt. Wish I had bought a 50$ heater at the local hardware store. Produces just as much or more heat using same or less power. To compound my mistake, I bought my unit from a shady distrubuter (American Sewing and Vacuum) who have double charged my credit card and are refusing to correct the mistake. I am still after them and they are giving me the runaround, promising to reverse the charges, but not coming through to this point. I am going after them through Mastercard. My advice is dont buy this product and especially do not buy from distributors who rent a hotel , visit your city for one day and then disappear with your money. They owe me 574$. When this unit malfunctions (and im sure it will judging by the online reviews) Im stuck because I dare not return it to the company I bought it from, because they will just scam me more, steal the unit and sell it to some other unsuspecting sucker in another town.
Anybody find it odd that "Bobby Flanagan" on March 18 has his name spelled "Bobby Flannigan" at the bottom of his post? If you are going to post a fake testimonial, at least take the time to spell your fake name correctly. A friend of mine purchased one of these heaters against my advice. It worked for a minute or two. Now it doesn't heat at all. Do yourself a favor and buy a cheaper heater and heat the room you are in. That's zone heating. That will save you money. It's a way of life, not a "miracle" heater that defies the laws of physics.
We bought an EdenPure in Sep of 2008. In Jan it went back for repairs. In April it went back for repairs again and after using it for the last week the plug had a meltdown. We called the company and really seem to be getting the run around. Does anyone have a phone # that can possibly get some results. The one they gave us has resulted in a busy signal whenever we try to call. By the way our house is all electric and it had no effect on our heating bill.
The point made about running this heater at below the "high" setting is excellent advise. The one point that I would like to make concerns "loading" factors of your electric service - meaning how much energy (kWh) you may be using at any one moment and how much your electric company charges you for it. Your electric company ususlly charges a higher rate per kWh for high usage - in other words - a "higher" loading factor. Try this: while using the EdenPure, try not using other high usage appliances such as microwaves, electic cloths dryers, toasters and the like. With some adjustments on how you use electric appliances, you could realize a more reasonable electric bill. By the way, I have been using the EdenPure XL1000 for two years and could not be happier.

I bought two Refurbished Eden pure's last winter. They saved quite a bit on my heating. In 2006 (without Edenpure) I spent $380 every 4 weeks on propane, last winter(with Eden Pure) $180 every 5-6 weeks. My electricity did not go up but $10 a month. That's the plus. If you do not like the sound of a cylndral fan going;you won't like it. To me the fan sounds like money being saved. Also, if you are used oil heat, propane or Natural Gas it will seem cooler. But if you are used to forced cold air heat pumps of the 70's & 80's... relax it's warmer than that. As for pipes, I still keep my propane unit on to keep water from freezing ... it just does not have to run all night to keep the house warm. I'm even thinking of buying one for my church to help on their electric. I'm sold and if you buy one, I really hope it works for you.
So Don Baker is calling Garrison Roberts testimony FALSE who stated that is cost him $1.58 per day for 12 hours of use for 3 units combined? I would really like to know the cost per kilowatt hour for each unit. Most commercials for other infrared products boast they run on cents per day, which would make Garrison Roberts statement correct. As for wondering how such a heater could possibly work, I shut my furnace off completely on sunny days. I have 12 ft of southern exposed windows. That sun will heat the entire front of my house in the winter on sunny days and I live in Michigan. I shut the heat off at 12 noon and don't put it back on until 5 or 6 pm at which time the house is still 70. I have a small natural gas wall unit in the back of the house. I'm thinking of keeping that off and running an I Heater instead. At night I want to run the I Heater and just the wall unit. All I know is that I'm not putting up with outrageous natural gas heating bills anymore. We're being ripped off by utility companies with little or no alternatives. Real nice free market system that's full of monopolies we're stuck with.
Geez, Harold Regis is an angry man. His review of the ifrared unit was usurped by his anger at lost fossil fuel jobs. There is new job training available for green jobs, you know the kind of jobs that won't give you mesothelioma, black lung, or various types of illness caused by inhaling gases like benzene. What an ignorant remark that we should stop progress toward a cleaner future for everyone because we need to hold on to fossil fuel jobs that hurt the worker and the environment so others are affected too. Brilliant thinking or lack of.
Bottom Line: Edenpure uses just as much electricity as any other electric-type heater and produces the same amount of heat. So, they're way over-priced and over-hyped. Look around for much better values, skip the red-hot glowing types as they can ignite nearby items and they make clicking noises as they heat up and cool down. I like the silent electric radiators with oil inside, very even heat, but they aren't too hip in the appearance category. Compared to Edenpure, you can easily save 80% off their prices if you shop around.
WOW~ I was thinking of buying one of these machines but I am more confused now than ever by reading all these posted comments. Everyone who has good to say about them someone knocks them down for liking them?? I am really unsure what to do.
This is a response to Mr. Garrett's post. That just figures from such a greener, tree-hugging destroyer of the common man. The world has been used the same way, generation after generation, in just the same manner without incident so what will a few moments in the vast history of our planet change save for serving as a tool to separate the hard working coal miner or auto technician or logger or mill technician from his job at a time when the economy couldn't be in more dire of straights since the great depression of our fore-bearers. I get so upset when I see a man who has worked all his life for one particular industry only to be told just shy of retirement that due to environmental protections that his job has been made obsolete....just tragic. Now that being said, I have nothing to say about the CZInfrared product save for I wonder whose poor job was cut in the creation of such a perfect product. I have yet to see an environmentalist suggest something positive that didn't DESTROY something wholesome in the process. Thank you for your time.
Good Morning, I purchased my CZInfrared 1500WT last winter to keep my townhome warm and toasty because I found that using clean and efficient electricity was a better environmental option versus our propane heat in Medford, Oregon. Being an active participant in the security of this planet's future, I abhor the use of fossil fuels in any fashion. The burning of fossil fuels creates unnecessary amounts of greenhouse gas in our volatile environment which threaten the stability of our ozone layer causing unnatural climate change and limiting the amount of oxygen that we breathe. Due to my concerns, I needed a better option to heat my home that is powered by solar panel technology that produces the electricity I use. While I do save inherently on my power from our local utility, it still makes sense to find an efficient option to heat my home during the height of winter. My CZInfrared heater allows me to do just that. I kept it on constantly this winter heating my living room, study, and bedroom depending upon where I was. It did a fantastic job of maintaining an even 72 F in all of these areas mentioned while being unassuming and blending into my wood-toned décor seamlessly. In fact, my only regret was that I had only purchased one between all rooms in my home. Next year, before the big winter hits my local area, I plan to buy 2 more CZ1500 models for my study and bedroom to continuously keep all my rooms at a consistent and comfortable temperature.
In response to Mr. Roberts, the only issue I can see with your assertions is that I fail to see how a space heater can effectively heat an area of this magnitude comfortably or efficiently. Please explain to me how this unit can be as efficient as a standard central heat system. Thank you for your time.
Good Morning, my name is Garrison Roberts. My wife and I just bought our first home 5 months ago...moving' up and finally realizing the American Dream. So shortly thereafter we found that it could be very costly during the impending winter to pay the higher propane costs that heating a 1800 sq ft home is...we needed a better solution. So we looked around and found some friends using 2 CZ Infrared 1500P heaters to supplement their home heat. It seemed to do an excellent job in the main areas of their home. So I took the leap of faith and invested in 3 units...they do not disappoint whatsoever. We run our thermostat at a constant 55 F and supplement up to 75 degrees F in our living room, one in our kitchen/dining area, and one in our finished basement that is converted into an office/study. The units perform perfectly and we set them to delay start about 45 minutes prior to coming home for an even, comfortable heat. I run our 3 units for about 12 hours per day for the cost of $1.58 per day or less than $50.00 per month in electrical cost per unit. It has saved us hundreds in potential propane costs this heating season already. I am so glad that I took the leap of faith and decided to choose Infrared heat to keep my new home comfy and warm. Thank you, CZ Infrared.

In response to Mr. Flanagan's post...You must be an uneducated hick to suppose that a simple space heater is going to be adequate to keep your pipes from freezing and provide the level of comfort in upper Maine necessary for normal living.
My name is Bobby Flanagan and I have a winter cabin upper Maine. For those who know anything about the harshness of Maine winters, they can be brutal. I searched for months for a heating solution to allow me to use less wood and save on fuel costs while up there during the holidays, and nothing seemed quite adequate. Then I came across infrared heating technology. I was attracted by the promise of supplementing lower-costing electricity with much higher propane costs for my winter cabin retreat. I started utilizing it in a zone-fashion with my normal propane system. This CZ Infrared 1500 heater allowed me to heat my great room much more cost-effectively during the cold winter months versus solely using my propane system. I love it. I can move it from room to room & it always heats my rooms evenly & comfortably. Thank you CZ for making my winter getaway and enjoyable retreat.
CZ is not eden pure though, they are a knock off and I have heard rumors they are being sued by eden pure. Rachel Pam - You should defintely call if you are having trouble with your heater, I think that is the most common problem with the older ones. The newer ones don't do that at all. Usually it's a filter problem, try running it without the filter or just call in and have the unit serviced. Older models had a one year and the new ones have a 3 year
I purchased the Edenpure 1000, not even a year ago, more like 6 months. Now, it won't stay running (no the temp isn't right), the thermostat, I believe, went bad. They will be getting a phone call. They state supposedly they last for 10 years! ! ! ! Not mine. In order to run, I must unplug it for 10 min. then plug it back in. Something definitely wrong. Beginning to believe these heaters are not all they make them out to be. And my electric bill went up 50 percent, and I wasn't using it as a main source. Only to keep the chill off when I got home from work.
I have done a lot of research on "space" type heaters because I wanted to reduce my power bill and my baseboard heat just wasn't cutting it. After reading my hesitation subsided. I purchased a CZ infrared heater and it has greatly exceeded my expectations. It is so safe that my animals enjoy basking in the infrared heat without any danger. This heater has truely been a blessing to my wallet and my peace of mind.
John it doesn't seem like you used it in conjuction if the heater only raises it up to 62 degrees. Where is your regular thermostat set at?? You can change the temp of the room usually 10 degrees. Also for the electric bill you need to look at the math.: On high for one hour the EdenPure uses 1483 watts, Lets round that to 1.5kwh. (1.5kwh)x(24hours) is 36 kilowatts a day or 1080 a month. At the average of 8 cents a kilowatt {says on your electric bill} you are looking at $86.40 increase. And that is the unit on HIGH ALL MONTH with no break. My manual even says don't run on high all month, which being a dope I did myself the first month and that mistake cost me $95.00 {higher kwh}. Then I read my manual used the correct setting and now I pay about $35.00 extra a month and save about 35% on my gas bill.
I purchased an Eden Pure 1000 about 3 month ago,I ran it in conjunction with my oil burner for 2 months my electric bill went from an average $50.00 a month to over $200.00 and it just barely kept my kitchen at 62deg. the kitchen is less then 150 sq.ft. IMO, high priced light bulb, or commonly known as JUNK a waste of money, if there is ever a CALS for misrepresenting this heater I'm signing on !
Mine woks great for about ten minues then shuts off,is this a commonly known problem opr is it just mine?Any and all info would be greatly apreciated.
The bulbs on the inside of the unit does not heat the air, it heats the metal (copper Lining) inside the unit, the metal radiates heat that increases the air temperature moving through the unit. The metal never gets hot enough that could start a fire or ignite, unless there is a short circuit or a malfunction of the components. A hair dryer has wire elements that become red hot and a fan blows air across the coils heating the air. The draw back is positive ions are released from the elements once high temps are achieved.
Ok, I see we have a few geniuses here. First off, your electric bill will go up depending on use. Gas is a utility to: Meaning you can save 50% to 60% on your gas bill. Deduct that savings vs electric use. Check your electric bill to see how much they charge per KWH. You can also plug in a usage meter into the wall then plug the heater into that, you can then see your total use for the heater. That new 50inch plasma TV might be the real problem. No, it is not like a hair dryer. The unit does not heat to a combustion level, meaning never hot enough to start a fire. You could not light a match with it if you touched the element. A hair dryer on the other hand is like a toaster, it will get hot enough to ignite. This is the health benefit, once temps increase to combustion level positive ions are released from the elements of a hair dryer or toaster. Each bulb is rated at 250watts 60v. not 120volts
I've always thought that a heater that works like a hair dryer would be great. Essentially , that's what the edenpure is, a large hair dryer. It has fan forced air over encased heating elements thermostatically controlled to cycle the heating elements on and off to avoid over heating. The fan is pretty high output and this distributes the heat around the room faster than most all space heaters( large propane garage heaters excluded). The main problem with the edenpure and suntwin are the quartz bulbs. They burn out after a short time and are expensive and difficult to replace (the earl models direct you to return your heater to the factory for bulb replacement). I purchased the edenpure 1000 during the summer at a reduced price and when I started using it at wintertime two of the bulbs burned out within a month. The way the machine is wired this caused two other bulbs to lose power and cease functioning as well. I ordered two new bulbs and replaced them myself (I'm an experienced repairman). Opening the machine requires removing forty two screws and the bulbs are hard wired in to the holders. These new bulbs burned out within two weeks........ Conclusion- Buy an oil filled radiant heater and place a fan behind it to circulate the air- Presto! efficient heat and NO replacement cost at all. And you save $300.00!

What am I doing wrong? I purchased a 1000XL EdenPure heater, received it around Thanksgiving time. I loved the way it heated my room and the fact it's safe, but mostly purchased it because it is supposed to save you 50 to 60 percent on your utility bill. I got my first bill last week since I have used the EdenPure. It's the highest bill I have ever received. not counting the Gas portion, the Electric portion alone is exactly $101.00 MORE than last month!I called the Company and they offered to let me return it but I got no answer as to why MY BILL wasn't 50-60 percent lower, NOT 100 percent higher, has anyone else had this problem? They said maybe my home isn't well insulated. My home is 1 year old and cost almost $250.000 so I know that is not the problem, Peggy Peltier Cicero, NY
