Before I tell you what’s not to like about the Edenpure quartz infrared heater, I’d like to spend a minute telling you what I do like about the Edenpure, and how it works.
How the EdenPure Works
At the heart of these infrared heaters are the quartz bulbs. Similar to incandescent lamps, quartz bulbs are formed by enclosing a tungsten resistance wire within a high purity quartz sheath. They provide even, non drying floor to ceiling heat and, according to the manufacturer, reduce positive ions in the atmosphere responsible for many respiratory problems. The bulbs are rated to last 5 – 7,000 hours and cost around $10 each to replace.
The Edenpure/SunTwin heaters are offered in 3 sizes: 500, 1,000, and 1,500 watt and the unit model numbers coincide with the heat output in watts. So a Suntwin 1500 Elite produces 1,500 watts. The heaters are thermostatically controlled, equipped with a circuit breaker, and have a 1 year warranty.
What I Do Like About the EdenPure Quartz Infrared Heater
It has a cool to the touch exterior and, unlike some other heaters, doesn’t have glowing red wires or an exposed fan. This is a big plus if you have kids and/or pets.
Despite the complaints some consumers have with it, I haven’t found one that is health or safety related.
What’s Not to Like
The #1 complaint of consumers who have actually purchased the heater comes down to this: Too little heat for too much money. Putting aside the cost factor for a moment, I’ll address the “too little heat” complaint first.
Too Little Heat
The results you get from a 1,500 watt heater, EdenPure or otherwise, depends on how it’s being used. Bear in mind, a 1,500 watt heater is the equivalent of only 5,000 Btus. This is minuscule compared to a typical 65,000 btu oil or gas fired furnace.
If you’re depending on a 1,500 watt heater as your only heat source, it will heat only 150 – 200 square feet depending on how well your home is insulated, obstructions to the flow of heat, such as walls, and the outside temperature.
Here’s the basic “rule of thumb” formula for calculating space heater capacity:
Watts/10 = heated space in square feet. Or: 1,500/10 = 150.
However, if you use a space heater to supplement your existing heating system by turning back the thermostat and letting the space heater pick up the slack, you could increase the effective heating range of a 1,500 watt heater to 600 square feet.
Too Much Money
I chalk this up to what I call the “furniture factor.” You can either buy a space heater that looks like a space heater, or one that complements your decor and doubles as an end table.
An even better example of the “furniture factor” is the electric fireplace. No matter which electric fireplace you look at, they all have the same 1,500 watt heater. Yet, depending on the design of the mantel piece, you could easily spend 2 or 3 times more on an electric fireplace than an EdenPure quartz infrared heater.
The difference is this: Most people who buy an electric fireplace are looking for furniture and everyone who buys an EdenPure portable heater is looking for heat.

I have found that if Bob Villa is recommending something, don't buy it! That is why he was fired from Public Television. He is a snake oil salesman.
I have lost all respect for Bob Villa and the Home Improvement guy, \AL.\ It was obvious to me the second time I watched the Infomercial that the electric bill would sky rocket. I feel sorry for the people buying this cr*p when they could have bought something they needed for their family or home. These type of infomercials are nothing more than broadcasts by \trusted\ celebrities from the truck of their cars at the back of a shopping center. I pray that they come forward and apologize to all the people they ripped off. It fall in the same category as Obama-(doesn't) Care.
I agree. have had mine for less than a year. It was a gift from my mother, she bougght two. Both have stopped working. Mine is used to neat less than 200 sq ft and it didn't do it well but wow what an increase in my electric bill, highest in 32 years. I would not buy this sh*t again. I find it hard to believe that they can stay in business. hopefully enough of this info can get out that we can put them out of business. Just another case of capitalism gone unchecked.
I purchased my eden pure 1000 heater on dec 14,2010.. People are right there is a 60 day return policy but when your hydro is only read every 60 days , this realy blows the return policy out the window..It would seem this is how the company are getting very rich on the back of hard working people as when you get you very high hydro bill after the 60 days there is not a darn thing you can do as they could care less when you call them..I have run my heater at 1/2 and it uses 41 Killowatt hours over a 24 hour period compared to 14 kilowatt hours when it is not running..I can not beleive that Bob Vila would promote something like this.Maybe he would like to pay my $743.00 hydro bill for two months..So BUYER BEWARE
We purchased the I heater the electric bill runs 30days behind so y the time we used it and got the bill it was out of warranty.how amazing is that!our bill was out rageous. this is nothing but false advertising.BEWARE OF SCAMS like this.
I purchased two Eden Pure heaters in October 2007, a 500 & 1000 watt unit. The 500 watt still applies minimum heat but, the 1000 watt only worked for a few hours. Upon inspecting this unit, I found 4 of the dual infra read elements burned out. They were the double stack units in the lower heat chamber. It is evident, too much heat from the two elements in each chamber that resulted in an overheat condition that crystallized the wiring and lamp end. Poor design from the manufacturer of this unit. Also, when Eden Pure was contacted, only get the run around about their product. In business only to market a product that cost hundreds above their actual manufacturing cost. Before purchasing this product, I would seriously look at other compatible units for less cost and more endurance.
Purchased two of the Eden Pure heaters; lowered our thermostat ( heat pump) and only used Eden Pure during the day, never on high. Just got our utility bill and it was the third highest ever!! The other two highers ones was when we had our heat pump on e-heat in error! DO NOT BUY these heaters. Counting the costs of the heaters and the amount they added to our electric bill for having used them.....we spent an extra $1000!!! REPEAT....... Do not waste your money like we did.
Bought an Edebpure on someone else's advice. Having read all the testimonials I wish I hadn't. High electric bills and the unit needs to run constantly to make even a slight dent. Only one year old and now it doesn't work at all. So thankful I didn't buy a second one at half off. If it sounds too good to be true it usually is.
I just bought the EdenPure 1000. Works OK, but not as advertised (very little heat). Worst thing: It crapped out after a power outage, and will not start. I called Customer Service and they said to contact my home owners Insurance!! I cannot believe that this device cannot handle a power outage! Customer Service says I have to unplug it for a full 45 minutes and try again, and then if it does not work call back. They also said to use a surge protector - What??? The instructions explicity state to plug directly into 110 ground receptical. IF this thing does not come back to life, it is going back to EdenPure forever.
I have read only negative reviews. They have a "Sale" that ends today...the 1000 one for $397 including shipping and tax. Does this make it more worth it? How long do the quartz bulbs last? And I have heard about the shutoff after 10 mins. Too risky?? Please comment anyone. My sister has 3 but recently had problems with one and it cost her. She is not forthcoming with info in general and is a notrious money-waster so I am hesitant.
I would never buy an Eden pure again. Mine lasted only a few weeks and died. Sent it back and got it again in the summer and again only lasted a few weeks when winter came but this time it is out of warranty by a few days. NO PRICE IS A GOOD PRICE.
