Fire Alarm Light: Safety for the Deaf

by Christopher Smith, published Saturday, April 5th, 2008 at 7:56 pm

A few decades back, no one had ever heard of a fire alarm for a private home. In those days, a fire alarm was what happened at school when some kid pulled the switch thinking he was cool. Now fire alarms have become an important part of our society, and we find them everywhere. We no longer feel safe without several of them in our homes. But what about the people in our country who can’t hear fire alarms? How can they feel safe? That’s why fire alarm lights are catching on in popularity to provide safety for our citizens who are unable to hear an alarm.

Feel the Vibrations, See the Lights

You might be surprised at how many places you’ve been where there were fire alarm lights, because you probably never noticed them. If you’ve been in public places such as theaters, auditoriums, and shopping malls, then you really have seen them and just not known it.

Fire alarm lights aren’t too difficult to spot once you know what you’re looking for. They look like what they are. You’ve possibly even seen one blinking on and off at a mall or somewhere, but without a loud alarm, you didn’t realize what it really was.

Wherever deaf people live or work, there needs to be fire alarm lights. Although many deaf people are able to feel the vibration given off by a regular fire alarm, they are unable to do so unless it is located near them. We have a lot of hearing-impaired people in the U.S., especially with the aging of the population, so it has definitely become more necessary to install these lights for their safety.

The Downside of FIre Alarm Lights

People who live alone and are deaf often have fire alarm lights installed in their homes or apartments. That way, if there’s a fire, the lights will flash, and the person can take himself to safety. Unfortunately, there’s a catch in this plan. If the person is asleep when the alarm goes off, he won’t see it. With this problem in mind, most deaf people have security systems with sensors. In case of a fire, an alarm will be transmitted directly to the fire department.

If you’re deaf, having adequate warning of a fire is an absolute necessity in both your home and your workplace. Good units are available for sale many different places. You can start at your home improvement store which should have a selection of models at a variety of prices. An electronic store is a good choice if you are looking for more high-tech, state-of-the-art models. You can expect to pay for the added quality. In addition, you might check out the internet. With so many online stores in operation, you can often find very competitive prices if you look for deals. Whatever the cost, thought, isn’t your safety worth it?
