First Impressions the Key to Home Selling

Built by Ellie G on Thursday, October 19th, 2006

When it comes to home selling, I honestly believe it’s the small things that really make a difference. Whenever you offer your home privately or through a real estate agent there are certain things you should always keep in mind on the inside and out.

Painting the interior of your home in neutral colors, removing excess family photos and baking bread during an open house are all excellent ideas but I really believe it can be the first impression or the curb appeal’ of your home that it really makes a difference whether your home sells or not.

My best home selling advice would be to spruce up your exterior with either a fresh coat of paint in a rich color or consider replacing an old door altogether. The key is to welcome your potential buyer with an impressive entranceway that makes a bold statement.

Touching up your window frames with a fresh coat of paint is also an excellent idea as is cleaning the windows to make everything fresh and clean.

Window boxes or shrubs are another good way of enhancing the curb appeal of your home. A window box can transform the front of your home by adding color and life. It also shows that you care about the home and have taken the time to add some personal touches.

Shrubs are also excellent for turning an everyday house into a home that is welcoming and established.

If your exterior lighting fixtures are old your may want to update them or go the antique reproduction route.

If you are serious about selling your home during the warmer months then you may want to invest in having your gardens professionally landscaped. If you already have nice gardens, be sure to keep them weeded during the home selling process. Nothing turns off a potential buyer more than a home that doesn’t appear to be cared for.

Finally, if you’re looking to give your home a personality of its own consider a family name sign. When handcrafted, such a sign can add a unique charm and character to the exterior appearance of your home. Just remember to take the sign with your when you leave.

Happy home selling!

  1. Agree with the neutral schemes. There are so many people that get attached to a renovation or re-decorating project that they get emotionally involved and loose sight of the actual objective of the project which is; decorating to sell the house fast to other people, not to themselves. The emotioal involvement clouds neutral thinking.

  2. A good way to get ideas for decorating homes is to look at new homes that have been built in your area, or magazines, TV..They generally give a good example of how neutral and "tidy" schemes inside and out work best to get your house sold. Don't get emotionally involved in fancy colours and decor that suit your taste and not necessarily others'. Stick to the goal - you want your house sold.
