How does a freelance writer work? A freelance writer work independently, either in a home office or in a rented space but most freelance writer write articles or columns on their own and actively seek out new markets in which to place them.
I like the freedom of being a freelance writer . Those writing for newspapers and magazines have less freedom in what they choose to write, but they have more job security and always know when their next paycheck will arrive. Freelancers trade job security and regular pay for for their independence.
Some freelancers are generalist, they will write about anything they think they can sell. Others are specialist, choosing to write only in a particular field such as health and medicine, or travel. Successful freelancers have a lot of market savvy, meaning they are familiar with all the different publications they could market their work to and know how to approach those pablication. Here’s some strategies of finding freelance job from the book “Great Jobs for Liberal Arts Majors,” by Blythe Camenson:
* Get a Foot in the Door
Some expert advise that you should take any job you can get your foot in the door. For example, if you wanted to be an editor, you could start out as a contract assistant. If you get your self in the door and get to know the people in the department for which you prefer to work, you chances are better than an unknown candidate.
* Prepare a Portfolio / Audition tape
The key is having a good portfolio with you, one that you can quickly open and display if the right person walks. A portfolio should showcase your best work.
* Internship.
If you can get involved in two or even three college internship, you’ll make more contacts and have a better chance of employment when you graduate.
* Follow up your application a week or so later as a reminder. This helps to jog their memory and shows how creative you are.
