Fun Things to Do in Egypt Besides Visiting Pyramids

Built by William Manor on Tuesday, June 26th, 2007

There is more, much more, to Egypt than ancient Egyptian artifacts. While most Egypt travel information focuses on pyramids and mummies, there is a whole world of activities that have little to do with Antiguity. Here is a list of some enjoyable things you can do while in Egypt. Some of them might surprise you.

Beautiful Beaches

You may not think about fun in the sun when you think about Egypt, but more and more tourists are flocking to Egypt’s sunny beaches. Whether you make your destination the Gulf of Suez, near Cairo or the more well known mainland coast along the Red Sea, you’ll find balmy weather and exclusive resorts. Until recently, Egyptian beaches have been something of a local secret, but today, resorts are popping up everywhere and the feeling is one of experimentation. Whether you’re interested in all night partying or a women-only beach far from the prying eyes of men, you’ll find it on Egypt’s beautiful shores.

Fantastic Fishing

Egypt is also well known for its famous fishing. From tilapia to big catfish to Nile perch, you can find the catch of a lifetime in Egypt. Head for one of the largest man-made lake in Egypt, Lake Nassar, where a dam built on the Nile at Aswan resulted in a body of water that stretches over 300 miles. The lake is surrounded by stunning desert land, and if you are an angler, this is not an experience you should miss.

Spectacular Scuba Diving

If you can’t stay out of the water, Egypt is the place for you! Diving is a year round sport in Egypt and there are many drowned walls, caves and wrecks to explore. Beginning or novice divers should stick to Dhab, and Sharm el-Sheik, where both equipment and instruction can be found. If you are a more experienced diver, you may want to visit Marsa, Galeb, or Quseir to take a look at the coral formations and the marine life. Diving is still a relatively new activity in Egypt and there are a number of places that have yet to be fully explored.

Super Desert Safaris

When you are interested in getting away from the coast, head inland with one of Egypt’s famed desert safaris. If you want to explore both the country side and the towns, there is no better way to get around. These guided tours will take you to the Egyptian oases and to the great temples of the ancient gods and the tombs of kings. You can see breathtaking vistas and learn more about Egypt than you could ever do from a book as guides take you through the pyramids and the famous Black Desert.

Great Golfing

Golfing is another new phenomenon in Egypt, but it is one where the country has outdone itself. If you have any interest in this game at all, you must go to Dream Golf, a course located in front of an under-construction residential city. Dream Golf is a perfect course to walk the holes, and the 7200 yard course, covered in well-tended grass, is one of the largest in Egypt. Don’t miss out on the tennis courts and swimming pools that are part and parcel of this luxurious course.

Sensational Shopping

If you can buy it, you can find it in Egypt and there is no way to list all the shopping that can be done in this country. Of particular note is the Khan e-Khalil bazaar, Egypt’s oldest market. Goods from all over the world come to the Khan, and you can find everything in jewelry, leather, alcohol and clothing that you can imagine. Don’t deny yourself the pleasure of walking through Cairo’s streets though; there are many small stores that are just waiting to be discovered and if you are skilled in haggling, you can come away with terrific bargains!

Now, you’ve got a lot of great reasons to travel to Egypt. Don’t forget your passport and Egypt visa. You’ll need both.

Egypt is one of the most interesting places to visit. I see no boredom what so ever in a country filled with sightseeing, attractions, lovely beaches, bazaars, and magic of the east. Although I traveled the world but I think Egypt is still of the most fascinating countries you can visit. The Nile Cruise experience is one of the best things you can do it is a journey back in time but using the modern accommodation fascilities. The beaches in Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh are unparallered in the whole world and if the say that Sharm El Sheikh is divers paradise it is truely is.

Cool and attractive! I am so tired of working and now reading your post I imagine my vacation that is coming. Me parents were in Egypt last winter: beautiful pictures and deep impressions. They told about fishing. My father is a fisherman therefore it was the first thing that he tried in Egypt.
