October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Not only are many organizations promoting awareness of breast cancer, there are many fundraisers being conducted this month to raise money for breast cancer research. Many national retail stores are selling pink-themed items and donating a portion of the proceeds to various breast cancer organizations.
According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation (www.nationalbreastcancer.org), this year in America, more than 211,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 43,300 will die. One woman in eight either has or will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. In addition, 1,600 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 400 will die this year. If detected early, the five-year survival rate exceeds 95%. Mammograms are among the best early detection methods, yet 13 million U.S. women 40 years of age or older have never had a mammogram.
One of the ways people are helping to raise money for breast cancer-related initiatives is by purchasing pink-themed products either online or at local retailers.
Consumer products ranging from clothes, jeweley, and appliances to food are being sold with a pink theme this month. I noticed at the grocery store that even Campbells soup is selling soups with pink labels. According to Advertising Age, Campbells soup sales have doubled due to the pink labels on their soup.
