One of the best ways to start learning about fundraising and grants is by visiting the Foundation Center, either online, or in person. I suggest spending some time at the website of the the Foundation Center which provides a wealth of information.

The Foundation Center was founded in 1956, and is the nation’s leading authority on philanthropy. It provides information and services to grantseekers, grantmakers, researchers, policymakers, the media, and the general public.

The Foundation Center is headquartered in New York City and has field offices in Atlanta, Cleveland, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C.

In addition to those locations there are information centers throughout the United States in libraries, community foundations, and other nonprofit resource centers that provide a core collection of Foundation Center publications, and services for grantseekers.

I have taken courses in grant proposal writing at a Foundation Center office and found them extremely informative. Taking courses is also a good way to meet other fundraisers and grantseekers in your community.

There are also many free, online courses you can take at the Foundations Center’s website. In addition to the online courses, the Foundation Center has a searchable online database of over 80,000 grantmakers in the United States. You can search this database for free. If you are a fundraiser seeking grant fundraising you will become very familiar with the Foundation Center.
