As the Editor for Hair Resources I get many Emails from men and women that have gotten hair extensions and they now have damaged hair or permanent hair loss.
The truth of the matter is that hair extensions are not a one size fits all. Not everyone that wants hair extensions should be getting them. And if you are getting hair extensions, you may be getting the wrong type for your hair type.
What should you base your decision on when deciding which stylist or method to go with?
Making the Hair Extensions Decision
Before you run off to the nearest salon to get hair extensions you really should do a little bit of research. The amount of different methods and hair qualities out there is tremendous and making the right decision could mean the difference between getting good hair extensions or ending up with damaged hair or worse hair loss.
Research the methods: Find out about all the different methods. What type of hair are they suited for, what sort of training the stylist must have, how long they last, average costs, etc.
Schedule Consultations: If you were getting a medical procedure wouldn’t you get a second opinion? The same goes for hair extensions. Always get 2-4 different opinions. This way you can compare all the details of each method and stylists.
Verify the Stylists Training: Most hair damage comes from improper installation and removal of hair extensions and poor quality hair. Make sure your stylist is trained.
Call References: Call 2-4 references for the stylist you are going with. Ask detailed, probing questions
Go with your Instincts: If you go for a consultation and the stylist is rude with you or his/her workstation is very messy—you probably shouldn’t go with that stylist. Hair extensions are a very involved personal service that require clean workstation and close attention to details.
Although money is always a factor with everything, try not to base your decision on costs. When you are comparing methods and stylists, try to exclude money from the comparison. Think of which method or stylist you can trust with your hair.
