Gluten-free Diet For Celiac Disease Sufferers

Built by Sandra Kim Leong on Sunday, March 23rd, 2008

Celiac disease is a digestive disease that affects the small intestine. Unfortunately, it is not easy to detect the presence of this disease since its symptoms are also common ones like diarrhea and cramping. However, if you consistently get diarrhea, abdominal pains and rectal discomfort, together with frequent bouts of inflammatory disorders like itchy skin rashes, you may have reason to suspect that you have celiac disease. One clear indicator is a severe reaction to gluten. Your intestines get inflammed whenever you consume wheat and bread products that contain this ingredient. If you do not get treatment for your celiac disease, poor growth and development coupled with low energy can occur due to the malabsorption of nutrients.

Having celiac disease can also lead to secondary and tertiary disorders. For instance, when severe diarrhea is frequently experienced, problems such as electrolyte imbalances, anal fissures, rectal bleeding, and subsequent anemia can develop. Fortunately, you can reduce the severity and frequency of your symptoms from adopting a gluten free diet.

Admittedly, a gluten free diet presents a bit of a challenge in America’s bread loving society. However, if your symptoms are typically severe, then avoiding bread and wheat products is worth the inconveniences involved. By and large, sufferers must stay away from anything containing gluten: usually this refers to wheat, oats, rye and also barley. Since several of these grains are known as thickening agents in many dishes, this means that you not only have to give up bread and baked goods, but requires you to be diligent in scrutinizing food labels.

It is best that you do home cooking, so that you can control what goes into what you eat. For home cooking, you should emphasize arrowroot and maize, while soybean or gram flour may be used for modified baking. Luckily, there is a number of recipe books and also online sources for those who are seeking for a gluten-free diet.

Celiac disease appears to be more widespread now compared to previously. Perhaps it is because more people are aware about the existence of this disease. With enough numbers, savvy manufacturers of food and beverage items are also following the trend and manufacturing products specifically with celiac disease sufferers in mind. While you may have to give up eating your wheat-containing foods, you can also find alternatives in wheat free beer, gluten-free containing grains and other food sources for either thickening or taste enhancement.

There appears to be no medication or cure for celiac disease. Hence a gluten-free diet is the best way forward. If you have celiac disease, get in touch with a registered dietician for assistance in meal planning. It is important that you do not worsen the chronic inflammation that is going on in your gastrointestinal tract and suffer painful and debilitating symptoms from it.
