Looking for a way to inspire your kids to get outside and play? The only foolproof way I’ve discovered is to have them invite some friends over and plan a fun group kid activity.
Organize a neighborhood parade. Get all the neighborhood children involved in a fun parade. Have your child send out flyers notifying the other children in the neighborhood to decorate their bikes, scooters and wagons for an after dinner parade. One parent could offer to host the participants for Popsicles or cookies and lemonade at the end of the parade route while another videotapes the festivities. Later invite the children in to watch the parade themselves.
Host a game day. Another fun kid activity is to invite neighborhood children or have your kids invite two or three friends each to participate in an afternoon of fun and games. Tailor the games for all age groups participating. Have everyone wear comfortable clothes, runners and a change of clothes just in case. Team games should focus on the taking part and having fun not on winning. Be sure to supply lots of refreshments. Popsicles and watermelon are also great. Don’t forget to grab your camera and capture all the fun and laughter.
Plan a party. Your child can enjoy several creative hours designing homemade invitations made of construction paper and stickers and deciding on the guest list, menu, and theme. The party can be simple or whimsical, but it need not be elaborate. A large casserole dish of macaroni and cheese or hot dogs on the BBQ with watermelon and Kool-Aid should suffice for a menu.
Some party suggestions: invite all the neighbourhood teddy bears for tea. Or another good kid activity idea would be to host a community birthday bash where each guest brings a gift for a grab bag and everyone gets to blow out the candles on the cake. You might also try an end-of the summer good-bye party in which guests fill out certificates of appreciation for one another, such as To Amber , for being my bike-riding buddy or To Justin, for sharing your scooter. If you want to include party favours packs of new back-school pencils or novelty eraser are a great idea.
