Halloween Costumes that Are Not Expensive

Built by Nathalie Lussier on Thursday, August 21st, 2008

These days you are more likely to pay more for your Halloween costume than for an every day outfit that you will wear more than once. So why do we spend so much money on a halloween costume that we are only going to wear for one night of the year?

Well, it is quite simple, we want to look good and we want to have fun on Halloween. But there are ways for you to find halloween costumes that are not expensive, so keep reading to look good on Halloween night without spending a fortune!

Look in Your Own Closet

Chances are that you have quite a few older pieces of clothing that you might be able to donate to your halloween costume cause. Most people don’t wear all the clothes they own. If you haven’t worn an item for more than one year, chances are it is ready to be turned into an exciting halloween costume. Don’t be afraid to use scissors or a sewing machine!

Shop at Thrift Stores for Halloween Costume Pieces

You might not find the perfect ready-made halloween costume at your local thrift shop. However, with a little bit of imagination, and your frugal halloween costume ideas, you can find some hidden gems. Before you go to the store, sketch out a few of your ideal halloween costume ideas. These can range from pirate, maid, secretary, police officer, cowboy, and even astronaut.

Then when you get to the thrift shop, look for any pieces that might fit your ideas. You might not find anything at first, but take a second or third look. Sometimes an old pair of boots could be spray painted red to look like Wonder Woman’s boots. Or you could find the perfect cheap cowboy hat. You can also buy outfits solely for their materials: then you can cut and sew these into a real halloween costume later.

Find Halloween Props at the Dollar Store

Look in your dollar store for small halloween costume props like your witch’s broom, or devil’s staff. You can also find really inexpensive halloween costume goodies like face paint, glitter, wigs, and fake face appendages. Now you have just about everything you need to turn these inexpensive materials into a halloween costume that will make your mother proud. Speaking of your mother, why not ask her to help out with the sewing? If that’s not possible, you can learn to do it yourself. Your frugality will be rewarded, and you can be sure that no one else is going to have the same halloween costume as you!
