Halloween Safety For Young Children And How To Keep Them Safe

Built by Darlene loeffel on Monday, August 23rd, 2010

Halloween offers several fun activities for the entire family but you should remember that safety always comes first, especially if you have zealous children all psyched up to celebrate this gruesomely-fun festival. Here are a few tips that will ensure Halloween safety for young children.

Since your young children are sure to be adorned in various costumes, you should start out by ensuring that those costumes are totally safe for their bodies. The costumes should be comfortable to wear and should use Velcro fasteners for easy entry and exit in case of any problem.

The material itself should be soft while also being certified as fire-resistant by relevant authorities. The costumes should not have any tiny or sharp buttons, and each button should be fixed in a sturdy manner to the costume. Full costumes should ensure large openings for the face or eyes.

If you are making props with your children then you should ensure that sharp knives, cutters and scissors are kept well out of their reach. You should use these tools yourself and keep them away once your job is done. You should also use acrylic paints or other water-based paints on all Halloween props and allow them to dry sufficiently before putting them up.

All dangerous-looking props such as knives, saws, chainsaws, pitchforks, etc should be made of flexible rubber or plastic and should be blunt at the tips. You should also ensure that your Jack O’Lantern is powered by a flickering light that runs on batteries instead of using candles since young children might try to insert their fingers inside the cutouts and burn themselves.

Your kids should only be allowed to move out with other elder kids or adults while embarking on a trick or treat mission. They should be allowed to walk only on sidewalks and should visit only known homes that have taken part in celebrating Halloween. Young children should be cautioned on accepting sweets from strangers at all times, especially during Halloween.

They should also be cautioned against running in someone’s yard since there could be wires laid out to light up the bulbs that could cause them to trip and fall. Children should also be told to remain at the front door of each house and not go inside any home.

If you are buying any Halloween products from stores then you should make sure that you test them before handing them over to young children. There should not be any small loosely fitted plastic part or parts on any product that can be pried out by an excited child.

You should definitely avoid using dry ice to create optical illusions since it can cause severe burns in case it comes in contact with bare skin. Instead, you should opt for a fog machine that again should be kept out of reach of small children. You should always keep a first aid kit handy during Halloween that is suitable to treat children and adults alike.

Halloween is indeed awaited with great excitement especially by young children. However, you should ensure Halloween safety for young children so that this festival of lights, sound, gruesome displays, and sweets are not marred by an unfortunate accident.
