Have you been to a dermatologist lately?

After many months of trying different treatments for acne, we decided to venture to a dermatologist. Find out what surprising things the dermatologist suggested.

The IN Treatment for Acne Today

There are so many different over the counter products for acne today that it can be a little overwhelming when you try to decide on just one product. Then, the product usually costs between $8-25 or so. When you try it out, using the product exactly as described, there is this expectation that you will have finally found the cure for your acne product.

Then several weeks later, or even sooner, you discover that not only did that new acne product not work, it made your acne look worse.

Well, after several months of this routine, we decided to go to a dermatologist to get a professional opinion –or so we thought. After the doctor said ‘Hello how are you’ , his next words were ‘Accutane’. From everything that I have read about this new product, accutane, this is supposed to be a last-resort product for acne, when all other methods have failed.

It seems that this is a first-resort product for the dermatologist that we went to. After reading up on accutane–causes depression, suicide, organ damage, and also the fact that it is very expensive- between $300-500 per month, I immediately indicated that I did not want to try accutane.

Then when I asked about alternative treatments, the word was antibiotics. If it were just a simple take 10 days of antibiotics and you are done, then maybe that would be something we would consider.

But no, this dermatologist said that you continue to take antibiotics every day for as long as you have acne. Isn’t this the problem the medical industry is facing today—with superbugs being created from repetitive use of antibiotics?

Anyway, the visit to the dermatologist was very disappointing and very alarming at the same time. Nearly 80% of teen-agers have acne. Is this the course of treatment they are all taking?
